1 ¶ Follow after charity and earnestly pursue spiritual gifts, but above all, that ye may prophesy.

Procuren alcanzar el amor; pero también deseen ardientemente los dones espirituales, sobre todo que profeticen.

2 F or he that speaks in an unknown tongue speaks not unto men, but unto God, for no one understands him, even though by the Spirit he speaks mysteries.

Porque el que habla en lenguas no habla a los hombres, sino a Dios, pues nadie lo entiende, sino que en su espíritu habla misterios.

3 B ut he that prophesies speaks unto men for edification and exhortation and comfort.

Pero el que profetiza habla a los hombres para edificación, exhortación y consolación.

4 H e that speaks in an unknown tongue edifies himself, but he that prophesies edifies the congregation.

El que habla en lenguas, a sí mismo se edifica, pero el que profetiza edifica a la iglesia.

5 I would that ye all spoke with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied, for greater is he that prophesies than he that speaks with tongues, unless he interprets, that the congregation may receive edifying.

Yo quisiera que todos hablaran en lenguas, pero aún más, que profetizaran. Porque el que profetiza es superior al que habla en lenguas, a menos de que las interprete para que la iglesia reciba edificación.

6 ¶ Now, brothers, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you either with revelation or with knowledge or with prophecy or with doctrine?

Ahora bien, hermanos, si yo voy a ustedes hablando en lenguas, ¿de qué provecho les seré a menos de que les hable por medio de revelación, o de conocimiento, o de profecía, o de enseñanza ?

7 A nd even things without life giving sound, whether flute or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is played or harped?

Aun las cosas inanimadas, como la flauta o el arpa, al producir un sonido, si no dan con distinción los sonidos, ¿cómo se sabrá lo que se toca en la flauta o en el arpa?

8 F or if the trumpet gives an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?

Porque si la trompeta da un sonido incierto, ¿quién se preparará para la batalla ?

9 S o likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue a clear and definite word, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.

Así también ustedes, a menos de que con la boca pronuncien palabras inteligibles, ¿cómo se sabrá lo que dicen ? Pues hablarán al aire.

10 T here are many kinds of distinct voices in the world, and nothing is dumb.

Hay, quizás, muchas variedades de idiomas en el mundo, y ninguno carece de significado.

11 T herefore, if I ignore the virtue of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaks as a barbarian, and he that speaks shall be a barbarian unto me.

Pues si yo no sé el significado de las palabras, seré para el que habla un extranjero, y el que habla será un extranjero para mí.

12 E ven so ye, forasmuch as ye desire the things of the Spirit, earnestly pursue excellence unto the edification of the congregation.

Así también ustedes, puesto que anhelan dones espirituales, procuren abundar en ellos para la edificación de la iglesia.

13 T herefore, let him that speaks in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.

Por tanto, el que habla en lenguas, pida en oración para que pueda interpretar.

14 F or if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.

Porque si yo oro en lenguas, mi espíritu ora, pero mi entendimiento queda sin fruto.

15 ¶ What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also; I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

Entonces ¿qué ? Oraré con el espíritu, pero también oraré con el entendimiento. Cantaré con el espíritu, pero también cantaré con el entendimiento.

16 E lse when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupies the place of the ignorant say, Amen, at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understands not what thou sayest?

De otra manera, si bendices sólo en el espíritu, ¿cómo dirá el “Amén ” a tu acción de gracias el que ocupa el lugar del que no tiene ese don, puesto que no sabe lo que dices?

17 F or thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.

Porque tú, bien das gracias, pero el otro no es edificado.

18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all;

Doy gracias a Dios porque hablo en lenguas más que todos ustedes.

19 y et in the congregation I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

Sin embargo, en la iglesia prefiero (deseo) hablar cinco palabras con mi entendimiento, para instruir también a otros, antes que diez mil palabras en lenguas.

20 B rothers, be not children in understanding, howbeit in malice be ye children; but in understanding be perfect.

Hermanos, no sean niños en la manera de pensar. Más bien, sean niños en la malicia, pero en la manera de pensar sean maduros.

21 ¶ In the law it is written, In other tongues and with other lips I will speak unto this people; and yet for all that, they will not hear me, saith the Lord.

En la Ley está escrito: “ Por hombres de lenguas extrañas y por boca de extraños hablare a este pueblo, y ni aun asi Me escucharan,” dice el Señor.

22 T herefore, tongues are for a sign, not to those that believe, but to those that do not believe; but prophecy is not for those that do not believe, but for those who believe.

Así que las lenguas son una señal, no para los que creen, sino para los incrédulos; pero la profecía es una señal, no para los incrédulos, sino para los creyentes.

23 I f, therefore, the whole congregation is come together into one place and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?

Por tanto, si toda la iglesia se reúne y todos hablan en lenguas, y entran algunos sin ese don o que son incrédulos, ¿no dirán que ustedes están locos ?

24 B ut if all prophesy, and there come in one that does not believe or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all;

Pero si todos profetizan, y entra un incrédulo, o uno sin ese don, por todos será convencido, por todos será juzgado.

25 f or the secrets of his heart are made manifest; and so falling down on his face, he will worship God, declaring that God is indeed in you.

Los secretos de su corazón quedarán al descubierto, y él se postrará y adorará a Dios, declarando que en verdad Dios está entre ustedes. El Orden en los Cultos

26 ¶ How is it then, brothers? when ye come together, each one of you has a psalm, has doctrine, has tongues, has revelation, has interpretation. Let all things be done unto edification.

¿Qué hay que hacer, pues, hermanos ? Cuando se reúnan, cada cual aporte salmo, enseñanza, revelación, lenguas o interpretación. Que todo se haga para edificación.

27 I f anyone speaks in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.

Si alguien habla en lenguas, que hablen dos, o a lo más tres, y por turno, y que uno interprete.

28 B ut if there is no interpreter, let him keep silence in the congregation, and let him speak to himself and to God.

Pero si no hay intérprete, que guarde silencio en la iglesia y que hable para sí y para Dios.

29 L et the prophets speak two or three, and let the others judge.

Y que dos o tres profetas hablen, y los demás juzguen.

30 I f any thing is revealed to another that sits by, let the first be silent.

Pero si a otro que está sentado le es revelado algo, que calle el primero.

31 F or ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be exhorted.

Porque todos pueden profetizar uno por uno, para que todos aprendan y todos sean exhortados.

32 A nd the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.

Los espíritus de los profetas están sujetos a los profetas.

33 F or God is not the God of disorder, but of peace, as in all the congregations of the saints.

Porque Dios no es Dios de confusión, sino de paz, como en todas las iglesias de los santos.

34 ¶ Let your women keep silence in the congregations, for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be in subjection, as also saith the law.

Las mujeres guarden silencio en las iglesias, porque no les es permitido hablar, antes bien, que se sujeten como dice también la Ley.

35 A nd if they desire to learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home, for it is a dishonest thing for women to speak in the congregation.

Y si quieren aprender algo, que pregunten a sus propios maridos en casa, porque no es correcto que la mujer hable en la iglesia.

36 ¶ What? Did the word of God come out from you? or did it come unto you only?

¿Acaso la palabra de Dios salió de ustedes, o sólo a ustedes ha llegado?

37 I f anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.

Si alguien piensa que es profeta o espiritual, reconozca que lo que les escribo es mandamiento del Señor.

38 B ut anyone that ignores them shall be ignored.

Pero si alguien no reconoce esto, él no es reconocido.

39 T herefore, brothers, earnestly pursue prophecy and do not forbid to speak with tongues.

Por tanto, hermanos míos, anhelen el profetizar, y no prohíban hablar en lenguas.

40 B ut let all things be done decently and in order.

Pero que todo se haga decentemente y con orden.
