1 ¶ And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to fornicate with the daughters of Moab,

Mientras Israel habitaba en Sitim, el pueblo comenzó a prostituirse con las hijas de Moab.

2 w ho called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods; and the people ate and bowed down to their gods.

Y éstas invitaron al pueblo a los sacrificios que hacían a sus dioses, y el pueblo comió y se postró ante sus dioses.

3 A nd Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor; and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.

Así Israel se unió a Baal de Peor, y se encendió la ira del Señor contra Israel.

4 A nd the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the princes of the people and disjoint them before the LORD hanging them from a tree against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.

Y el Señor dijo a Moisés: “Toma a todos los jefes del pueblo y ejecútalos delante del Señor a plena luz del día, para que se aparte de Israel la ardiente ira del Señor.”

5 T hen Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baalpeor.

Entonces Moisés dijo a los jueces de Israel: “Cada uno de ustedes mate a aquéllos de los suyos que se han unido a Baal de Peor.”

6 ¶ Then, behold, one of the sons of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses and in the sight of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the testimony.

Entonces un hombre, uno de los Israelitas, vino y presentó una Madianita a sus parientes, a la vista de Moisés y a la vista de toda la congregación de los Israelitas, que lloraban a la puerta de la tienda de reunión.

7 A nd when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation and took a javelin in his hand;

fue tras el hombre de Israel, entró en la alcoba y los traspasó a los dos, al hombre de Israel y a la mujer por su vientre. Y así cesó la plaga sobre los Israelitas.

9 A nd those that died in that plague were twenty-four thousand.

Y los que murieron por la plaga fueron 24, 000.

10 T hen the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying,

Entonces el Señor dijo a Moisés:

11 P hinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned my wrath away from the sons of Israel, being zealous for my sake among them, therefore I did not consume the sons of Israel in my jealousy.

“Finees, hijo de Eleazar, hijo del sacerdote Aarón, ha apartado Mi furor de los Israelitas porque demostró su celo por Mí entre ellos, y en Mi celo no he destruido a los Israelitas.

12 B ecause of this say unto them, Behold, I establish my covenant of peace with him;

Por tanto, dile: ‘Ciertamente Yo le doy Mi pacto de paz;

13 a nd he shall have, and his seed after him, even the covenant of the everlasting priesthood because he was zealous for his God and reconciled the sons of Israel.

y será para él y para su descendencia después de él, un pacto de sacerdocio perpetuo, porque tuvo celo por su Dios e hizo expiación por los Israelitas.’”

14 N ow the name of the Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with the Midianite, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a family of the tribe of Simeon.

El nombre del hombre de Israel que fue muerto con la Madianita era Zimri, hijo de Salu, jefe de una casa paterna de Simeón.

15 A nd the name of the Midianite woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur, prince of peoples, of the house of the father, in Midian.

Y el nombre de la mujer Madianita que fue muerta era Cozbi, hija de Zur, el cual era cabeza del pueblo de una casa paterna en Madián.

16 ¶ And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying,

Entonces el Señor habló a Moisés y le dijo:

17 D eclare war on the Midianites and smite them;

“Hostiguen a los Madianitas y hiéranlos;

18 f or they treated you as enemies with their wiles, with which they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain in the day of the plague for Peor’s sake.

pues ellos han sido hostiles a ustedes con sus engaños, con los que los engañaron en el asunto de Peor, y en el asunto de Cozbi, hija del jefe de Madián, hermana de ellos, que fue muerta el día de la plaga por causa de Peor.”
