1 ¶ And he commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill these men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man’s money in his sack’s mouth;

Entonces José ordenó al mayordomo de su casa, diciendo: “Llena de alimento los costales de los hombres, todo lo que puedan llevar, y pon el dinero de cada uno de ellos en la boca de su costal.

2 a nd put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack’s mouth of the youngest, with the money of his wheat. And he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken.

Y mi copa, la copa de plata, ponla en la boca del costal del menor, con el dinero de su grano.” Y el mayordomo hizo conforme a lo que había dicho José.

3 A s soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their asses.

Al rayar el alba, fueron despedidos los hombres con sus asnos.

4 A nd when they were gone out of the city, and not yet far off, Joseph said unto his steward, Rise up, follow after those men; and when thou dost overtake them, say unto them, Why have ye rewarded evil for good?

Cuando ellos habían salido de la ciudad, y no estaban muy lejos, José dijo al mayordomo de su casa: “Levántate, sigue a esos hombres. Cuando los alcances, diles: ‘¿Por qué han pagado mal por bien?

5 I s this not the one in which my lord drinks and in which indeed he divines? Ye have done evil in so doing.

¿No es ésta la copa en que bebe mi señor, y que de hecho usa para adivinar ? Obraron mal en lo que hicieron.’”

6 W hen he overtook them, he spoke unto them these same words.

Así que los alcanzó, les dijo estas palabras.

7 A nd they said unto him, Why saith my lord these words? In no wise should thy slaves do according to this thing.

Y ellos le dijeron: “¿Por qué habla mi señor de esta manera ? Lejos esté de sus siervos hacer tal cosa.

8 B ehold, the money, which we found in our sacks’ mouths, we brought again unto thee out of the land of Canaan; how then should we steal out of thy lord’s house silver or gold?

El dinero que encontramos en la boca de nuestros costales, se lo volvimos a traer de la tierra de Canaán. ¿Cómo, pues, habíamos de robar de la casa de su señor plata u oro?

9 W ith whoever of thy slaves it is found, both let him die and we also will be my lord’s bond slaves.

Aquel de sus siervos que sea hallado con ella, que muera, y también nosotros entonces seremos esclavos de mi señor.”

10 A nd he said, Now also let it be according unto your words; he with whom it is found shall be my slave, and ye shall be blameless.

Y él dijo: “Sea ahora también conforme a sus palabras. Aquél que sea hallado con ella será mi esclavo, y los demás de ustedes serán inocentes.”

11 T hen they made haste, and each one took his sack down to the ground, and each one opened his sack.

Ellos se dieron prisa. Cada uno bajó su costal a tierra, y cada cual abrió su costal.

12 A nd he searched and began at the eldest and finished at the youngest; and the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.

El mayordomo registró, comenzando con el mayor y acabando con el menor, y la copa fue hallada en el costal de Benjamín.

13 T hen they rent their clothes, and each one laded his ass, and they returned to the city.

Entonces ellos rasgaron sus vestidos, y después de cargar cada uno su asno, regresaron a la ciudad.

14 A nd Judah and his brethren came to Joseph’s house, for he was yet there; and they fell before him on the ground.

Cuando Judá llegó con sus hermanos a casa de José, él estaba aún allí, y ellos cayeron a tierra delante de él.

15 A nd Joseph said unto them, What deed is this that ye have done? Know ye not that such a man as I can certainly divine?

Y José les dijo: “¿Qué acción es ésta que han hecho? ¿No saben que un hombre como yo puede ciertamente adivinar ?”

16 T hen Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord? What shall we speak or how shall we clear ourselves? God has found out the iniquity of thy slaves; behold, we are my lord’s slaves, both we and he also with whom the cup is found.

Entonces dijo Judá: “¿Qué podemos decir a mi señor? ¿Qué podemos hablar y cómo nos justificaremos? Dios ha descubierto la iniquidad de sus siervos. Así que somos esclavos de mi señor, tanto nosotros como aquél en cuyo poder fue encontrada la copa.”

17 A nd he said, in no wise should I do so; but the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my slave; and as for you, go up in peace unto your father.

Pero José respondió: “Lejos esté de mí hacer eso. El hombre en cuyo poder ha sido encontrada la copa será mi esclavo. Pero ustedes, suban en paz a su padre.” Judá Intercede por Benjamín

18 ¶ Then Judah came near unto him and said, Oh my lord, let thy slave, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord’s ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy slave; for thou art even as Pharaoh.

Entonces Judá se le acercó, y dijo: “Oh señor mío, permita a su siervo hablar una palabra a los oídos de mi señor, y que no se encienda su ira contra su siervo, pues usted es como Faraón mismo.

19 M y lord asked his slaves, saying, Have ye a father or a brother?

Mi señor preguntó a sus siervos: ‘¿Tienen padre o hermano ?’

20 A nd we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a young man of his old age, yet a lad; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loves him.

Y respondimos a mi señor: ‘Tenemos un padre ya anciano y un hermano pequeño, hijo de su vejez. Su hermano ha muerto, así que sólo queda él de los hijos de su madre, y su padre lo ama.’

21 A nd thou didst say unto thy slaves, Bring him down unto me that I may set my eyes upon him.

“Entonces usted dijo a sus siervos: ‘Tráiganmelo para que yo lo vea.’

22 A nd we said unto my lord, The lad cannot leave his father; for if he should leave his father, his father would die.

Y nosotros respondimos a mi señor: ‘El muchacho no puede dejar a su padre, pues si dejara a su padre, éste moriría.’

23 A nd thou didst say unto thy slaves, Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, ye shall see my face no more.

Usted, sin embargo, dijo a sus siervos: ‘Si su hermano menor no desciende con ustedes, no volverán a ver mi rostro.’

24 A nd it came to pass when we came up unto thy slave my father, we told him the words of my lord.

“Aconteció, pues, que cuando subimos a mi padre, su siervo, le contamos las palabras de mi señor.

25 A nd our father said, Go again and buy us a little food.

Y nuestro padre dijo: ‘Regresen, cómprennos un poco de alimento.’

26 A nd we said, We cannot go down; if our youngest brother is with us, then will we go down; for we may not see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us.

Pero nosotros respondimos: ‘No podemos ir. Si nuestro hermano menor va con nosotros, entonces iremos. Porque no podemos ver el rostro del hombre si nuestro hermano no está con nosotros.’

27 T hen thy slave my father said unto us, Ye know that my wife bore me two sons;

“Y mi padre, su siervo, nos dijo: ‘Ustedes saben que mi mujer me dio a luz dos hijos;

28 a nd the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces, and I have not seen him since;

el uno salió de mi lado, y dije: “Seguro que ha sido despedazado,” y no lo he visto desde entonces.

29 a nd if ye take this one also from me and some disaster should befall him, ye shall bring my gray hairs with sorrow down to Sheol.

‘Si también se llevan a éste de mi presencia, y algo malo le sucede, ustedes harán descender mis canas con dolor al Seol (región de los muertos).’

30 N ow therefore when I come to thy slave my father, and the lad is not with us, seeing that his soul is bound up in the lad’s soul,

“Ahora pues, cuando yo vuelva a mi padre, su siervo, y el muchacho no esté con nosotros, como su vida está ligada a la vida del muchacho,

31 i t shall come to pass when he sees that the lad is not with us, that he will die: and thy slaves shall bring the gray hairs of thy slave our father down with sorrow to Sheol.

sucederá que cuando él vea que el muchacho no está con nosotros, morirá. Así pues, sus siervos harán descender las canas de nuestro padre, su siervo, con dolor al Seol.

32 F or thy slave became surety for the lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto thee, then I shall bear the sin before my father for ever.

Porque yo, su siervo, me hice responsable del muchacho con mi padre, diciendo: ‘Si no te lo traigo, que lleve yo la culpa delante de mi padre para siempre.’

33 N ow therefore, I pray thee, let thy slave remain instead of the lad as a bond slave to my lord, and let the lad go up with his brethren.

“Ahora pues, le ruego que quede este su siervo como esclavo de mi señor, en lugar del muchacho, y que el muchacho suba con sus hermanos.

34 F or how shall I go up to my father and the lad not be with me? I cannot go lest I see the evil that shall come on my father.

Pues, ¿cómo subiré a mi padre no estando el muchacho conmigo, sin que yo vea el mal que sobrevendrá a mi padre?”
