1 ¶ Now these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem unto the residue of the elders which were carried away captives, and to the priests and to the prophets and to all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon;

Estas son las palabras de la carta que el profeta Jeremías envió desde Jerusalén al resto de los ancianos del destierro, a los sacerdotes, a los profetas y a todo el pueblo que Nabucodonosor había llevado al destierro de Jerusalén a Babilonia.

2 ( after Jeconiah the king, and the queen, and the eunuchs, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, and the carpenters, and the smiths, were departed from Jerusalem;)

( Esto sucedió después de salir de Jerusalén el rey Jeconías, junto con la reina madre, los oficiales de la corte, los príncipes de Judá y de Jerusalén, los artífices y los herreros).

3 b y the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah, (whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent unto Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon) saying,

La carta que fue enviada por mano de Elasa, hijo de Safán, y de Gemarías, hijo de Hilcías, a quienes Sedequías, rey de Judá, envió a Babilonia, a Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, decía:

4 T hus hath the LORD of the hosts the God of Israel said, unto all that are carried away captives, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem unto Babylon,

“Así dice el Señor de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel, a todos los desterrados que envié al destierro de Jerusalén a Babilonia:

5 B uild houses and dwell in them; and plant gardens and eat the fruit of them;

‘Edifiquen casas y habíten las, planten huertos y coman de su fruto.

6 t ake wives and beget sons and daughters; give wives unto your sons and give husbands unto your daughters, that they may bear sons and daughters; that ye may be multiplied there and not diminished.

Tomen mujeres y tengan hijos e hijas, tomen mujeres para sus hijos y den sus hijas a maridos para que den a luz hijos e hijas, y multiplíquense allí y no disminuyan.

7 A nd seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the LORD for it; for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.

Y busquen el bienestar (la paz) de la ciudad adonde los he desterrado, y rueguen al Señor por ella; porque en su bienestar tendrán bienestar.’

8 ¶ For thus hath the LORD of the hosts the God of Israel said: Let not your prophets and your diviners that are in the midst of you, deceive you, neither hearken to your dreams which ye dream.

“Porque así dice el Señor de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: ‘Que no los engañen sus profetas, que están en medio de ustedes, ni sus adivinos, ni escuchen los sueños que tienen.

9 F or they prophesy falsely unto you in my name: I have not sent them, said the LORD.

Porque les profetizan falsamente en Mi nombre. Yo no los he enviado,’ declara el Señor.

10 F or thus hath the LORD said, That after seventy years are accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and quicken my good word upon you to cause you to return to this place.

“Pues así dice el Señor: ‘Cuando se le hayan cumplido a Babilonia setenta años, Yo los visitaré y cumpliré Mi buena palabra de hacerlos volver a este lugar.

11 F or I know the thoughts that I think concerning you, said the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you the end that you wait for.

Porque Yo sé los planes que tengo para ustedes,’ declara el Señor ‘planes de bienestar y no de calamidad, para darles un futuro y una esperanza.

12 T hen ye shall call upon me, and ye shall walk in my ways and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.

Ustedes me invocarán y vendrán a rogarme, y Yo los escucharé.

13 A nd ye shall seek me, and find me, for ye shall seek me with all your heart.

Me buscarán y Me encontrarán, cuando Me busquen de todo corazón.

14 A nd I will be found of you, said the LORD: and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the Gentiles and from all the places where I have driven you, said the LORD; and I will bring you again into the place from where I caused you to be carried away captive.

Me dejaré hallar de ustedes,’ declara el Señor, ‘y restauraré su bienestar (haré volver a sus cautivos) y los reuniré de todas las naciones y de todos los lugares adonde los expulsé,’ declara el Señor, ‘y los traeré de nuevo al lugar desde donde los envié al destierro.’

15 ¶ But ye have said, The LORD has raised us up prophets in Babylon;

“Por cuanto ustedes han dicho: ‘El Señor nos ha levantado profetas en Babilonia ’

16 k now that thus hath the LORD said of the king that sits upon the throne of David and of all the people that dwell in this city and of your brethren that are not gone forth with you into captivity;

(pues así dice el Señor acerca del rey que se sienta sobre el trono de David, y acerca de todo el pueblo que habita en esta ciudad, sus hermanos que no fueron con ustedes al destierro),

17 t hus hath the LORD of the hosts said: Behold, I will send upon them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence and will make them like the evil figs, that cannot be eaten, they are so evil.

así dice el Señor de los ejércitos: ‘Yo envío contra ellos la espada, el hambre y la pestilencia, y los pondré como higos reventados que de podridos no se pueden comer.

18 A nd I will persecute them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence, and will give them over as a reproach to all the kingdoms of the earth, as a curse, and as an astonishment, and a hissing, and an affront, unto all the Gentiles where I have driven them:

Los perseguiré con la espada, con el hambre y con la pestilencia, y los haré motivo de espanto para todos los reinos de la tierra, para que sean maldición, horror, burla y oprobio entre todas las naciones adonde los he arrojado.

19 b ecause they did not hearken unto my words, said the LORD, which I sent unto them by my slaves the prophets, rising up early and sending them; but ye did not hear, said the LORD.

Porque ellos no han escuchado Mis palabras,’ declara el Señor, ‘las que les envié repetidas veces por medio de Mis siervos los profetas; pero no escucharon,’ declara el Señor.

20 H ear ye therefore the word of the LORD, all ye of the captivity, whom I have cast out of Jerusalem unto Babylon:

“Oigan, pues, la palabra del Señor, todos ustedes los desterrados, a quienes he enviado de Jerusalén a Babilonia.”

21 T hus hath the LORD of the hosts the God of Israel said regarding Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and regarding Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, who prophesy falsely unto you in my name; Behold, I deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon; and he shall slay them before your eyes;

“Así dice el Señor de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel, acerca de Acab, hijo de Colaías, y acerca de Sedequías, hijo de Maasías, que les profetizan mentira en Mi nombre: ‘Yo los entregaré en manos de Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, y él los matará delante de los ojos de ustedes.

22 a nd of them shall be taken up a curse by all the captivity of Judah who are in Babylon, saying, The LORD make thee like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire;

Por causa de ellos será tomada esta maldición por todos los desterrados de Judá que están en Babilonia: “Que el Señor te haga como a Sedequías y como a Acab, a quienes el rey de Babilonia asó en el fuego.

23 b ecause they have committed villainy in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbours’ wives, and have spoken a word falsely in my name, which I have not commanded them; even I know and am a witness, saith the LORD.

Porque obraron neciamente en Israel, cometieron adulterio con las mujeres de sus prójimos y hablaron en Mi nombre palabras falsas que no les mandé. Yo soy el que sabe y soy testigo,” declara el Señor.’”

24 ¶ Thus shalt thou also speak to Shemaiah the Nehelamite, saying,

Y a Semaías el Nehelamita le dirás:

25 T hus hath the LORD of the hosts the God of Israel spoken, saying, Because thou hast sent letters in thy name unto all the people that are at Jerusalem and to Zephaniah the priest, the son of Maaseiah and to all the priests, saying,

“Así dice el Señor de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: ‘Por cuanto has enviado cartas en tu nombre a todo el pueblo que está en Jerusalén, y al sacerdote Sofonías, hijo de Maasías, y a todos los sacerdotes, diciéndole a Sofonías:

26 T he LORD has made thee priest in the stead of Jehoiada the priest, that ye should preside in the house of the LORD over every man that is furious and prophesies, putting him in the prison and in the stocks.

“El Señor te ha puesto por sacerdote en lugar del sacerdote Joiada, para estar encargado en la casa del Señor de todo loco que profetice, a fin de que lo pongas en el cepo y la argolla.

27 N ow therefore why hast thou not reprehended Jeremiah of Anathoth, for prophesying falsely unto you?

Entonces ¿por qué no has reprendido a Jeremías de Anatot que les profetiza a ustedes?

28 F or therefore he sent unto us in Babylon, saying, This captivity is long: build houses and dwell in them and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them.

Porque él nos ha enviado un mensaje a Babilonia, diciéndonos: ‘ El destierro será largo; edifiquen casas y habíten las, planten huertos y coman de su fruto.’”’”

29 A nd Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the ears of Jeremiah the prophet.

Y el sacerdote Sofonías leyó esta carta a oídos del profeta Jeremías.

30 T hen the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah, saying,

Entonces vino a Jeremías la palabra del Señor:

31 S end to all them of the captivity, saying, Thus hath the LORD said concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite; Because that Shemaiah has prophesied unto you, and I did not send him, and he caused you to trust upon a lie;

“Envía un mensaje a todos los desterrados, diciéndoles: ‘Así dice el Señor acerca de Semaías el Nehelamita: “Por cuanto Semaías les ha profetizado sin que Yo lo haya enviado, y les ha hecho confiar en una mentira,”

32 t herefore thus hath the LORD said; Behold, I visit upon Shemaiah the Nehelamite and upon his generation: he shall not have a man to dwell among this people; neither shall he behold that good which I do unto my people, said the LORD, because he has spoken rebellion against the LORD.

por tanto, así dice el Señor: “Voy a castigar a Semaías el Nehelamita y a su descendencia. No tendrá a nadie que habite en medio de este pueblo, ni verá el bien que voy a hacer a Mi pueblo,” declara el Señor “porque predicó la rebelión contra el Señor.”’”
