1 T hen Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem, to his mother’s brothers, and spoke with them and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying,

2 “ Please speak in the hearing of all the men of Shechem: ‘Which is better for you, that all seventy of the sons of Jerubbaal reign over you, or that one reign over you?’ Remember that I am your own flesh and bone.”

3 A nd his mother’s brothers spoke all these words concerning him in the hearing of all the men of Shechem; and their heart was inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, “He is our brother.”

Братята, прочее, на майка му изказаха всички тия думи за него на всеослушание пред всичките сихемски мъже; и сърцата им склониха към Авимелеха, защото рекоха: Той ни е брат.

4 S o they gave him seventy shekels of silver from the temple of Baal-Berith, with which Abimelech hired worthless and reckless men; and they followed him.

И дадоха му седемдесет сребърници от капището на Ваалверита; и с тях Авимелех нае едни никакви и развалени мъже, които вървяха подир него.

5 T hen he went to his father’s house at Ophrah and killed his brothers, the seventy sons of Jerubbaal, on one stone. But Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, because he hid himself.

И, като отиде в бащиния си дом в Офра, изкла върху един камък братята си Еровааловите синове, седемдесет души; само че най-младият Ероваалов син, Иотам, оцеля, защото се скри.

6 A nd all the men of Shechem gathered together, all of Beth Millo, and they went and made Abimelech king beside the terebinth tree at the pillar that was in Shechem. The Parable of the Trees

Тогава всичките сихемски мъже и целият дом Милов се събраха, и отивайки, поставиха Авимелеха цар, близо при дъба на гарнизона, който бе в Сихем.

7 N ow when they told Jotham, he went and stood on top of Mount Gerizim, and lifted his voice and cried out. And he said to them: “Listen to me, you men of Shechem, That God may listen to you!

А когато се извести това на Иотама, той отиде и застана на върха на хълма Гаризин, и като издигна гласа си, извика и каза им: Послушайте ме, сихемски мъже, за да ви послуша и Бог:

8 “ The trees once went forth to anoint a king over them. And they said to the olive tree, ‘Reign over us!’

9 B ut the olive tree said to them, ‘Should I cease giving my oil, With which they honor God and men, And go to sway over trees?’

Но маслината им отговорила: Да оставя ли аз тлъстината си, чрез която отдавам почит на Бога и на човека, та да ида да се развявам {Т.е., да началствувам.} над дърветата?

10 “ Then the trees said to the fig tree, ‘You come and reign over us!’

Тогава дърветата рекли на смокинята: Дойди ти и царувай над нас.

11 B ut the fig tree said to them, ‘Should I cease my sweetness and my good fruit, And go to sway over trees?’

Но смокинята им отговорила: Да оставя ли сладостта си и добрия си плод, та да ида да се развявам над дърветата?

12 “ Then the trees said to the vine, ‘You come and reign over us!’

После дърветата рекли на лозата: Дойди ти та царувай над нас.

13 B ut the vine said to them, ‘Should I cease my new wine, Which cheers both God and men, And go to sway over trees?’

Но лозата им отговорила: Да оставя ли виното, което весели Бога и човеците, та да ида да се развявам над дърветата?

14 “ Then all the trees said to the bramble, ‘You come and reign over us!’

Сетне всичките дървета рекли на тръна: Дойди ти, та царувай над нас.

15 A nd the bramble said to the trees, ‘If in truth you anoint me as king over you, Then come and take shelter in my shade; But if not, let fire come out of the bramble And devour the cedars of Lebanon!’

А трънът рекъл на дърветата: Ако наистина ме помазвате цар над вас, дойдете, прибегнете под сянката ми; но ако не, нека излезе огън из тръна и изпояде ливанските кедри.

16 “ Now therefore, if you have acted in truth and sincerity in making Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done to him as he deserves—

Сега, прочее, ако сте постъпили вярно и справедливо, като сте поставили Авимелеха цар, и ако сте се обходили добре с Ероваала и с дома му, и ако сте му сторили, според както <извършеното от> ръцете му заслужава, -

17 f or my father fought for you, risked his life, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian;

(защото баща ми воюва за вас и тури в опасност живота си та ви избави от ръката на Мадиама;

18 b ut you have risen up against my father’s house this day, and killed his seventy sons on one stone, and made Abimelech, the son of his female servant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother—

а днес сте въстанали против бащиния ми дом, и сте изклали върху един камък синовете му, седемдесет мъже, и сте поставили Авимелеха, син на слугинята му, цар на сихемските мъже, защото ви е брат), -

19 i f then you have acted in truth and sincerity with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you.

ако, прочее, днес сте постъпили вярно и справедливо с Ероваала и дома му, то радвайте се на Авимелеха, па нека се радва и той на вас!

20 “ But if not, let fire come from Abimelech and devour the men of Shechem and Beth Millo; and let fire come from the men of Shechem and from Beth Millo and devour Abimelech!”

Но ако не, нека излезе огън из Авимелеха и изпояде сихемските мъже и Миловия дом; и нека излезе огън из сихемските мъже и из Миловия дом и изпояде Авимелеха!

21 A nd Jotham ran away and fled; and he went to Beer and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother. Downfall of Abimelech

Тогава Иотам се спусна и побягна, и като отиде във Вир, живееше там, поради страха от брата си Авимелеха.

22 A fter Abimelech had reigned over Israel three years,

И Авимелех началствува над Израиля три години.

23 G od sent a spirit of ill will between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech,

А Бог прати злобен дух между Авимелеха и сихемските мъже, та сихемските мъже измениха на Авимелеха,

24 t hat the crime done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might be settled and their blood be laid on Abimelech their brother, who killed them, and on the men of Shechem, who aided him in the killing of his brothers.

за да дойде <наказание> за насилието, извършено над седемдесетте Ероваалови синове, върху Авимелеха брата им, който ги изкла, за да се наложи кръвта им <върху него> и върху сихемските мъже, които подкрепиха ръцете му, за да изколи братята си.

25 A nd the men of Shechem set men in ambush against him on the tops of the mountains, and they robbed all who passed by them along that way; and it was told Abimelech.

Сихемските мъже, прочее, поставиха засади против него по върховете на хълмовете, та обираха всички, които минаваха край тях по пътя. И това се извести на Авимелеха.

26 N ow Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brothers and went over to Shechem; and the men of Shechem put their confidence in him.

В това време дойде Гаал, Еведовият син и братята му, та заминаха в Сихем; и сихемските мъже се довериха на него.

27 S o they went out into the fields, and gathered grapes from their vineyards and trod them, and made merry. And they went into the house of their god, and ate and drank, and cursed Abimelech.

И като излязоха на полето, обраха лозята си, изтъпкаха <гроздето> и се развеселиха, и отидоха в капището на бога си, ядоха и пиха, и проклеха Авимелеха.

28 T hen Gaal the son of Ebed said, “Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerubbaal, and is not Zebul his officer? Serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem; but why should we serve him?

Тогава Гаал, Еведовият син, каза: Кой е Авимелех, и кой е Сихем, та да му слугуваме? Не е ли той Ероваалов син? и не е ли Зевул настойника му? Слугувайте на мъжете на Сихемовия баща Емора; а нему защо да слугуваме ние?

29 I f only this people were under my authority! Then I would remove Abimelech.” So he said to Abimelech, “Increase your army and come out!”

Дано бяха тия люде под моята ръка! тогава аз бих изгонил Авимелеха. И рече на Авимелеха: Увеличи войската си и излез!

30 W hen Zebul, the ruler of the city, heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was aroused.

И когато чу Зевул, управителят на града, думите на Гаала, Еведовия син, гневът му пламна.

31 A nd he sent messengers to Abimelech secretly, saying, “Take note! Gaal the son of Ebed and his brothers have come to Shechem; and here they are, fortifying the city against you.

И прати тайно вестители до Авимелеха да кажат: Ето, Гаал Еведовият син и братята му са дошли в Сихем; и, ето, те подигат града против тебе.

32 N ow therefore, get up by night, you and the people who are with you, and lie in wait in the field.

Затова, стани през нощта, ти и людете, които са с тебе, та постави засади по полето.

33 A nd it shall be, as soon as the sun is up in the morning, that you shall rise early and rush upon the city; and when he and the people who are with him come out against you, you may then do to them as you find opportunity.”

И на утринта, щом изгрее слънцето, стани рано и спусни се върху града; и, ето, когато <Гаал> и людете, които са с него, излязат против тебе, тогава ти му направи каквото ти дойде отръка.

34 S o Abimelech and all the people who were with him rose by night, and lay in wait against Shechem in four companies.

И тъй, през нощта Авимелех стана и всичките люде, които бяха с него, и поставиха четири дружини в засада против Сихем.

35 W hen Gaal the son of Ebed went out and stood in the entrance to the city gate, Abimelech and the people who were with him rose from lying in wait.

И Гаал, Еведовият син, излезе та застана във входа на градската порта; и Авимелех и людете, които бяха с него, станаха от засадата.

36 A nd when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains!” But Zebul said to him, “You see the shadows of the mountains as if they were men.”

А когато видя людете, Гаал рече на Зевула: Ето, люде слизат от върховете на хълмовете. А Зевул му каза: Сянката на хълмовете ти се вижда като човеци.

37 S o Gaal spoke again and said, “See, people are coming down from the center of the land, and another company is coming from the Diviners’ Terebinth Tree.”

Пак Гаал проговори, казвайки: Виж, люде слизат посред местността и една дружина иде покрай дъба Маоненим.

38 T hen Zebul said to him, “Where indeed is your mouth now, with which you said, ‘Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him?’ Are not these the people whom you despised? Go out, if you will, and fight with them now.”

Тогава Зевул му каза: Где е сега хвалението {Еврейски: Где са сега устата ти.} ти, Гдето рече: Кой е Авимелех та да му слугуваме? Не са ли тия людете, които ти презираше? Излез, прочее, сега, та се бий с тях.

39 S o Gaal went out, leading the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.

Тогава Гаал излезе на чело на сихемските мъже, та се би с Авимелеха.

40 A nd Abimelech chased him, and he fled from him; and many fell wounded, to the very entrance of the gate.

И Авимелех го погна; и той побягна пред него, и мнозина падаха мъртви чак до върха на портата.

41 T hen Abimelech dwelt at Arumah, and Zebul drove out Gaal and his brothers, so that they would not dwell in Shechem.

И Авимелех остана в Арума; а Зевул изпъди Гаала и братята му, за да не живеят в Сихем.

42 A nd it came about on the next day that the people went out into the field, and they told Abimelech.

А на утринта людете излязоха на полето; и това се извести на Авимелеха.

43 S o he took his people, divided them into three companies, and lay in wait in the field. And he looked, and there were the people, coming out of the city; and he rose against them and attacked them.

Тогава той взе людете <си> та ги раздели на три дружини, и постави засади на полето; и когато видя, че, ето, людете излизаха из града, стана против тях та ги порази.

44 T hen Abimelech and the company that was with him rushed forward and stood at the entrance of the gate of the city; and the other two companies rushed upon all who were in the fields and killed them.

И Авимелех и дружината, която беше с него, се спуснаха и застанаха във входа на градската порта, а двете дружини се хвърляха върху всичките, които бяха по полето та ги порази.

45 S o Abimelech fought against the city all that day; he took the city and killed the people who were in it; and he demolished the city and sowed it with salt.

И Авимелех, като се биеше против града през целия ден, превзе града и изби людете, които бяха в него, разори града и посея го със сол.

46 N ow when all the men of the tower of Shechem had heard that, they entered the stronghold of the temple of the god Berith.

А всичките мъже на сихемската кула, като чуха това, влязоха в укреплението на капището на бога си Верита.

47 A nd it was told Abimelech that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.

И извести се на Авимелеха, че всичките мъже от сихемската кула се били събрали.

48 T hen Abimelech went up to Mount Zalmon, he and all the people who were with him. And Abimelech took an ax in his hand and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it and laid it on his shoulder; then he said to the people who were with him, “What you have seen me do, make haste and do as I have done. ”

Тогава Авимелех се качи на гората Салмон, той и всичките люде, които бяха с него; и Авимелех взе брадвата в ръка та отсече клон от едно дърво, дигна го, и като го тури на рамото си, каза на людете, които бяха с него: Каквото видяхте, че направих аз, побързайте да направите и вие като мене.

49 S o each of the people likewise cut down his own bough and followed Abimelech, put them against the stronghold, and set the stronghold on fire above them, so that all the people of the tower of Shechem died, about a thousand men and women.

И така, всичките люде отсякоха, всеки клона си, и като отидоха подир Авимелеха натрупаха ги на укреплението, и, като бяха човеците вътре, запалиха укреплението, тъй щото и всичките мъже от сихемската кула умряха, около хиляда мъже и жени.

50 T hen Abimelech went to Thebez, and he encamped against Thebez and took it.

След това Авимелех отиде в Тевес та разположи стан против Тевес и го превзе.

51 B ut there was a strong tower in the city, and all the men and women—all the people of the city—fled there and shut themselves in; then they went up to the top of the tower.

Но всред града имаше яка кула, гдето прибягнаха всичките мъже и жени, и всичките градски жители, та се затвориха, и качиха се на покрива на кулата.

52 S o Abimelech came as far as the tower and fought against it; and he drew near the door of the tower to burn it with fire.

Но Авимелех, като стигна до кулата, би се против нея, и се приближи до вратата на кулата, за да я изгори с огън.

53 B ut a certain woman dropped an upper millstone on Abimelech’s head and crushed his skull.

Тогава една жена хвърли един горен воденичен камък на Авимелеховата глава та му строши черепа.

54 T hen he called quickly to the young man, his armorbearer, and said to him, “Draw your sword and kill me, lest men say of me, ‘A woman killed him.’” So his young man thrust him through, and he died.

И той бърже извика към момъка, оръженосеца си, и му каза: Изтегли меча си та ме убий, за да не рекат за мене: Жена го уби. И момъкът му го прободе, та умря.

55 A nd when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed, every man to his place.

И Израилевите мъже, като видяха, че Авимелех умря, разотидоха се, всеки на мястото си.

56 T hus God repaid the wickedness of Abimelech, which he had done to his father by killing his seventy brothers.

Така Бог въздаде на Авимелеха злодеянието, което стори на баща си, като уби седемдесетте си братя.

57 A nd all the evil of the men of Shechem God returned on their own heads, and on them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.

Тоже Бог въздаде на главите на сихемските мъже всичките им злодеяния; и дойде на тях проклетията, <произнесена> от Иотама Еровааловия син.
