1 T he proverbs of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel:

I Proverbi di Salomone, figlio di Davide, re d'Israele,

2 t o know wisdom and instruction; to discern the words of understanding;

per conoscere sapienza e ammaestramento per intendere i detti di senno;

3 t o receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity;

per ricevere ammaestramento circa l'agire saggiamente, la giustizia, il giudizio e la dirittura

4 t o give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young man:

per dare accorgimento ai semplici, conoscenza e riflessione al giovane.

5 t hat the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; that the man of understanding may attain to sound counsel:

Il savio ascolterà e accrescerà il suo sapere; l'uomo con intendimento ne otterrà saggi consigli,

6 t o understand a proverb, and parables, the words and riddles of the wise.

per comprendere una sentenza e un enigma, le parole dei savi e i loro detti oscuri

7 T he fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.

Il timore dell'Eterno è il principio della conoscenza, ma gli stolti disprezzano la sapienza e l'ammaestramento.

8 M y son, listen to your father’s instruction, and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching:

Ascolta, figlio mio, l'ammaestramento di tuo padre e non trascurare l'insegnamento di tua madre,

9 f or they will be a garland to grace your head, and chains around your neck.

perché saranno un fregio di grazia al tuo capo e monili al tuo collo.

10 M y son, if sinners entice you, don’t consent.

Figlio mio, se i peccatori ti vogliono sedurre, non acconsentire.

11 I f they say, “Come with us, Let’s lay in wait for blood; let’s lurk secretly for the innocent without cause;

Se dicono: «Vieni con noi; stiamo in agguato per spargere sangue, tendiamo insidie senza motivo all'innocente,

12 l et’s swallow them up alive like Sheol, and whole, like those who go down into the pit.

inghiottiamoli vivi, come lo Sceol tutt'interi come quelli che scendono nella fossa;

13 W e’ll find all valuable wealth. We’ll fill our houses with plunder.

noi troveremo ogni sorta di beni preziosi, riempiremo le nostre case di bottino;

14 Y ou shall cast your lot among us. We’ll all have one purse.”

tu trarrai a sorte la tua parte con noi, e fra noi tutti ci sarà una sola borsa»

15 M y son, don’t walk on the path with them. Keep your foot from their path,

figlio mio, non incamminarti con loro, trattieni il tuo piede dal loro sentiero,

16 f or their feet run to evil. They hurry to shed blood.

perché i loro piedi corrono al male e si affrettano a versare sangue.

17 F or in vain is the net spread in the sight of any bird:

Si tende invano la rete davanti a ogni sorta di uccelli;

18 b ut these lay wait for their own blood. They lurk secretly for their own lives.

ma costoro pongono agguati al loro proprio sangue e tendono insidie alla loro stessa vita.

19 S o are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain. It takes away the life of its owners.

Tali sono le vie di ogni uomo avido di guadagno; esso toglie la vita del suo proprietario.

20 W isdom calls aloud in the street. She utters her voice in the public squares.

La sapienza grida per le vie, fa sentire la sua voce per le piazze;

21 S he calls at the head of noisy places. At the entrance of the city gates, she utters her words:

essa chiama nei luoghi affollati e pronuncia i suoi discorsi all'ingresso delle porte in città:

22 “ How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, and fools hate knowledge?

«Fino a quando, o semplici, amerete la semplicioneria, e gli schernitori prenderanno gusto a schernire e gli stolti avranno in odio la conoscenza?

23 T urn at my reproof. Behold, I will pour out my spirit on you. I will make known my words to you.

Volgetevi alla mia riprensione; ecco, io verserò il mio Spirito su di voi e vi farò conoscere le mie parole.

24 B ecause I have called, and you have refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no one has paid attention;

Poiché ho chiamato e voi avete rifiutato, ho steso la mia mano e nessuno vi ha fatto attenzione,

25 b ut you have ignored all my counsel, and wanted none of my reproof;

anzi avete respinto ogni mio consiglio e non avete accettato la mia correzione,

26 I also will laugh at your disaster. I will mock when calamity overtakes you;

anch'io riderò della vostra sventura, mi farò beffe quando verrà ciò che temete,

27 w hen calamity overtakes you like a storm, when your disaster comes on like a whirlwind; when distress and anguish come on you.

quando ciò che temete verrà come una tempesta, e la vostra sventura arriverà come un uragano, quando verranno su di voi l'avversità e l'angoscia.

28 T hen will they call on me, but I will not answer. They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me;

Allora essi grideranno a me, ma io non risponderò, mi cercheranno con premura, ma non mi troveranno.

29 b ecause they hated knowledge, and didn’t choose the fear of Yahweh.

Poiché hanno odiato la conoscenza e non hanno scelto il timore dell'Eterno,

30 T hey wanted none of my counsel. They despised all my reproof.

non hanno voluto accettare il mio consiglio e hanno disprezzato ogni mia riprensione.

31 T herefore they will eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own schemes.

Perciò si ciberanno del frutto della loro condotta e si sazieranno dei loro propri consigli.

32 F or the backsliding of the simple will kill them. The careless ease of fools will destroy them.

Poiché lo sviamento dei semplici li uccide e la falsa tranquillità degli stolti li fa perire;

33 B ut whoever listens to me will dwell securely, and will be at ease, without fear of harm.”

ma chi mi ascolta abiterà al sicuro, sarà veramente tranquillo, senza paura di alcun male».
