1 H ow has the Lord covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in his anger! He has cast down from heaven to the earth the beauty of Israel, And hasn’t remembered his footstool in the day of his anger.

Come mai nella sua ira il Signore ha coperto con una nube la figlia di Sion? Egli ha gettato dal cielo in terra la gloria d'Israele e non si è ricordato dello sgabello dei suoi piedi nel giorno della sua ira.

2 T he Lord has swallowed up all the habitations of Jacob, and has not pitied: He has thrown down in his wrath the strongholds of the daughter of Judah; He has brought them down to the ground; he has profaned the kingdom and its princes.

Il Signore ha distrutto senza pietà tutte le dimore di Giacobbe; nella sua ira ha demolito le fortezze della figlia di Giuda, le ha gettate a terra, profanando il regno e i suoi capi.

3 H e has cut off in fierce anger all the horn of Israel; He has drawn back his right hand from before the enemy: He has burned up Jacob like a flaming fire, which devours all around.

Con ira ardente egli ha infranto tutta la potenza d'Israele, ha ritirato la propria destra davanti al nemico, ha bruciato in mezzo a Giacobbe come un fuoco fiammeggiante che divora tutt'intorno.

Ha devastato il suo tabernacolo, come un giardino, ha distrutto il suo luogo d'assemblea, l'Eterno ha fatto dimenticare in Sion le feste solenni e i sabati e nel furore della sua ira ha rigettato re e sacerdote.

7 T he Lord has cast off his altar, he has abhorred his sanctuary; He has given up into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces: They have made a noise in Yahweh’s house, as in the day of a solemn assembly.

Il Signore ha abbandonato il suo altare, ha rigettato il suo santuario, ha consegnato nelle mani del nemico le mura delle sue fortezze, essi hanno alzato grida nella casa dell'Eterno come in un giorno di festa solenne.

8 Y ahweh has purposed to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion; He has stretched out the line, he has not withdrawn his hand from destroying; He has made the rampart and wall to lament; they languish together.

L'Eterno ha deciso di distruggere le mura della figlia di Sion, ha teso la corda, non ha ritirato la mano dal distruggere, ha fatto gemere bastioni e mura ambedue languono.

10 T he elders of the daughter of Zion sit on the ground, they keep silence; They have cast up dust on their heads; they have clothed themselves with sackcloth: The virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground.

Gli anziani, della figlia di Sion siedono per terra in silenzio; han gettato polvere sul loro capo, si sono cinti di sacco; le vergini di Gerusalemme piegano fino a terra il loro capo.

11 M y eyes do fail with tears, my heart is troubled; My liver is poured on the earth, because of the destruction of the daughter of my people, Because the young children and the infants swoon in the streets of the city.

I miei occhi si consumano per il piangere, le mie viscere fremono, il mio fegato si spande in terra per la distruzione della figlia del mio popolo, per il venir meno dei bambini e dei lattanti nelle piazze della città.

12 T hey tell their mothers, Where is grain and wine? When they swoon as the wounded in the streets of the city, When their soul is poured out into their mothers’ bosom.

13 W hat shall I testify to you? what shall I liken to you, daughter of Jerusalem? What shall I compare to you, that I may comfort you, virgin daughter of Zion? For your breach is great like the sea: who can heal you?

Come potrò esortarti? A che cosa ti rassomiglierò, o figlia di Gerusalemme? Che cosa paragonerò a te per consolarti, o vergine figlia di Gerusalemme? Poiché la tua rovina è grande come il mare; chi potrà guarirti?

14 Y our prophets have seen for you false and foolish visions; They have not uncovered your iniquity, to bring back your captivity, but have seen for you false revelations and causes of banishment.

I tuoi profeti hanno avuto per te visioni false e insensate; non hanno messo a nudo la tua iniquità, per allontanare da te la cattività; essi hanno proferito per te profezie false e ingannevoli.

15 A ll that pass by clap their hands at you. They hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem, saying, Is this the city that men called The perfection of beauty, The joy of the whole earth?

Tutti i passanti battono le mani contro di te; fischiano e scuotono la testa contro la figlia di Gerusalemme: «E' questa la città che chiamavano "la bellezza perfetta" "la gioia di tutta la terra"?».

16 A ll your enemies have opened their mouth wide against you; They hiss and gnash the teeth; they say, We have swallowed her up; Certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found, we have seen it.

Tutti i tuoi nemici spalancano la bocca contro di te; fischiano e digrignano i denti, dicono: «L'abbiamo inghiottita! Sí, questo è il giorno che aspettavamo; siamo arrivati a vederlo».

17 Y ahweh has done that which he purposed; he has fulfilled his word that he commanded in the days of old; He has thrown down, and has not pitied: He has caused the enemy to rejoice over you; he has exalted the horn of your adversaries.

L'Eterno ha compiuto ciò che aveva ideato; ha adempiuto la parola che aveva decretato dai giorni antichi. Ha distrutto senza alcuna pietà, ha fatto in modo che il nemico si rallegrasse su di te, ha esaltato la potenza dei tuoi avversari.

18 T heir heart cried to the Lord: wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears run down like a river day and night; Give yourself no respite; don’t let the apple of your eye cease.

Il loro cuore grida al Signore: «O mura della figlia di Sion, fate scorrere come un torrente, le lacrime giorno e notte. Non datevi pace, non abbiano riposo le pupille dei vostri occhi.

19 A rise, cry out in the night, at the beginning of the watches; Pour out your heart like water before the face of the Lord: Lift up your hands toward him for the life of your young children, that faint for hunger at the head of every street.

20 L ook, Yahweh, and see to whom you have done thus! Shall the women eat their fruit, the children that are dandled in the hands? Shall the priest and the prophet be killed in the sanctuary of the Lord?

«Guarda, o Eterno, e considera. Chi hai trattato in questo modo? Dovevano le donne mangiare il frutto del loro grembo i bambini che accarezzavano? Dovevano il sacerdote e il profeta essere massacrati nel santuario del Signore?

21 T he youth and the old man lie on the ground in the streets; My virgins and my young men are fallen by the sword: You have killed them in the day of your anger; you have slaughtered, and not pitied.

Fanciulli e vecchi giacciono a terra per le strade; le mie vergini e i miei giovani sono caduti di spada; tu li hai uccisi nel giorno della tua ira, li hai massacrati senza pietà,

22 Y ou have called, as in the day of a solemn assembly, my terrors on every side; There was no one that escaped or remained in the day of Yahweh’s anger: Those that I have dandled and brought up has my enemy consumed.

Tu hai convocato come ad un giorno di festa i terrori che mi circondano da ogni lato. Nel giorno dell'ira dell'Eterno non c'è stato né fuggiasco né superstite. Quelli che avevo allattato e allevato li ha sterminati il mio nemico».
