“Why are times for judging not set up by the All-powerful? And why do those who know Him not see these days?

2 H á os que mudam os marcos dos limites e apascentam rebanhos que eles roubaram.

Some take away the land-marks and take fields and animals.

3 L evam o jumento que pertence ao órfão e tomam o boi da viúva como penhor.

They drive away the donkeys that belong to those who have no parents. They take the bull that belongs to a woman whose husband has died, as a promise that she will pay what she owes.

4 F orçam os necessitados a sair do caminho e os pobres da terra a esconder-se.

They push poor people off the road. All the poor of the land are made to hide themselves.

5 C omo jumentos selvagens no deserto, os pobres vão em busca de comida; da terra deserta a obtêm para os seus filhos.

See, they go out like wild donkeys in the desert to look for food for their children.

6 J untam forragem nos campos e respigam nas vinhas dos ímpios.

They gather food in the fields, and gather what they can that is left from the grape-fields owned by the sinful.

7 P ela falta de roupas, passam a noite nus; não têm com que cobrir-se no frio.

They lie all night without clothing, and have no covering in the cold.

8 E ncharcados pelas chuvas das montanhas, abraçam-se às rochas por falta de abrigo.

They are wet with the mountain rains and stay close to the rocks for cover.

9 A criança órfã é arrancada do seio de sua mãe; o recém-nascido do pobre é tomado para pagar uma dívida.

Others take from the breast the child who has no father. They take the child from the poor as a promise that they will pay what they owe.

10 P or falta de roupas, andam nus; carregam os feixes, mas continuam famintos.

They make the poor go about without clothing, making them carry loads of cut grain while they are hungry.

11 E spremem azeitonas dentro dos seus muros; pisam uvas nos lagares, mas assim mesmo sofrem sede.

Among the olive trees they make oil. They crush grapes but they are thirsty.

12 S obem da cidade os gemidos dos que estão para morrer, e as almas dos feridos clamam por socorro. Mas Deus não vê mal nisso.

Men from the city cry inside themselves. The souls of those who are hurt cry out. Yet God does not listen to their prayer.

13 “ Há os que se revoltam contra a luz, não conhecem os caminhos dela e não permanecem em suas veredas.

“Then there are those who turn against the light. They do not want to know its ways or stay in its paths.

14 D e manhã o assassino se levanta e mata os pobres e os necessitados; de noite age como ladrão.

The one who kills people gets up early in the morning. He kills the poor and those in need. And during the night he is like a robber.

15 O s olhos do adúltero ficam à espera do crepúsculo; ‘Nenhum olho me verá’, pensa ele; e mantém oculto o rosto.

The eye of the one who is not faithful in marriage waits for the evening, saying, ‘No one will see me.’ And he covers his face.

16 N o escuro os homens invadem casas, mas de dia se enclausuram; não querem saber da luz.

In the dark they dig into houses. They shut themselves up during the day and do not know the light.

17 P ara eles a manhã é tremenda escuridão; eles são amigos dos pavores das trevas.

For midnight is morning to them. They are not afraid of the fears of darkness.

18 “ São, porém, como espuma sobre as águas; sua parte da terra foi amaldiçoada, e por isso ninguém vai às vinhas.

“They are taken away on the top of the waters. Their part of the earth is cursed. They do not go to their grape-fields.

19 A ssim como o calor e a seca depressa consomem a neve derretida, assim a sepultura consome os que pecaram.

Dry weather and heat take away the water from the snow, just as the place of the dead takes away those who have sinned.

20 S ua mãe os esquece, os vermes se banqueteiam neles. Ninguém se lembra dos maus; quebram-se como árvores.

A mother will forget him. The worm is pleased to eat him until he is remembered no more. Sin will be broken like a tree.

21 D evoram a estéril e sem filhos e não mostram bondade para com a viúva.

He does wrong to the woman who cannot give birth. And he does no good for the woman whose husband has died.

22 M as Deus, por seu poder, os arranca; embora firmemente estabelecidos, a vida deles não tem segurança.

But God by His power gives long life to the strong. They rise again, even when they had no hope of life.

23 E le poderá deixá-los descansar, sentindo-se seguros, mas atento os vigia nos caminhos que seguem.

He makes them safe and gives them strength, and His eyes are on their ways.

24 P or um breve instante são exaltados, e depois se vão, colhidos como todos os demais, ceifados como espigas de cereal.

They are given honor for a little while, and then they are gone. They are brought low and gathered up as all others are. They are cut off like the heads of grain.

25 “ Se não é assim, quem poderá provar que minto e reduzir a nada as minhas palavras?”

If it is not so, who can prove me a liar, and show that what I say means nothing?”
