1 Q uando Mardoqueu soube de tudo o que tinha acontecido, rasgou as vestes, vestiu-se de pano de saco, cobriu-se de cinza, e saiu pela cidade, chorando amargamente em alta voz.

When Mordecai learned all that had been done, he tore his clothes. He dressed in cloth made from hair and put on ashes, and went out into the city and cried with loud cries.

2 F oi até a porta do palácio real, mas não entrou, porque ninguém vestido de pano de saco tinha permissão de entrar.

He went as far as the king’s gate, for no one was to go through the king’s gate wearing cloth made from hair.

3 E m cada província onde chegou o decreto com a ordem do rei, houve grande pranto entre os judeus, com jejum, choro e lamento. Muitos se deitavam em pano de saco e em cinza.

There was much sorrow among the Jews in each and every part of the nation where the king’s law was made known. They went without food and cried with sounds of sorrow. Many lay in cloth made from hair and in ashes.

4 Q uando as criadas de Ester e os oficiais responsáveis pelo harém lhe contaram o que se passava com Mardoqueu, ela ficou muito aflita e mandou-lhe roupas para que as vestisse e tirasse o pano de saco; mas ele não quis aceitá-las.

Then Esther’s women and men servants came and told her, and the queen was very troubled. She sent clothes for Mordecai to wear, that he might take off his clothes made from hair. But he would not take them.

5 E ntão Ester convocou Hatá, um dos oficiais do rei, nomeado para ajudá-la, e deu-lhe ordens para descobrir o que estava perturbando Mardoqueu e por que ele estava agindo assim.

Then Esther called Hathach from the king’s servants whom the king had chosen to help her. She told him to go to Mordecai and find out what was wrong and why.

6 H atá foi falar com Mardoqueu na praça da cidade, em frente da porta do palácio real.

So Hathach went out to Mordecai at the king’s gate in the open space of the city.

7 M ardoqueu contou-lhe tudo o que lhe tinha acontecido e quanta prata Hamã tinha prometido depositar na tesouraria real para a destruição dos judeus.

And Mordecai told him all that had happened to him. He told him just how much money Haman had promised to pay to the king’s store-houses to have the Jews destroyed.

8 D eu-lhe também uma cópia do decreto que falava do extermínio e que tinha sido anunciado em Susã, para que ele o mostrasse a Ester e insistisse com ela para que fosse à presença do rei implorar misericórdia e interceder em favor do seu povo.

He also gave him one of the letters of the law that was sent out from Susa to destroy the Jews, that he might show it to Esther and let her know. And he said that she should go in to the king and beg him to show favor to her people.

9 H atá retornou e relatou a Ester tudo o que Mardoqueu lhe tinha dito.

Hathach went and told Esther what Mordecai had said.

10 E ntão ela o instruiu que dissesse o seguinte a Mardoqueu:

Then Esther told Hathach to say to Mordecai,

11 “ Todos os oficiais do rei e o povo das províncias do império sabem que existe somente uma lei para qualquer homem ou mulher que se aproxime do rei no pátio interno sem por ele ser chamado: será morto, a não ser que o rei estenda o cetro de ouro para a pessoa e lhe poupe a vida. E eu não sou chamada à presença do rei há mais de trinta dias”.

“All the king’s servants and the people of the king’s nation know that he has one law for any man or woman who comes to him in his room who has not been called: They will be put to death, unless the king holds out his special golden stick to him so that he may live. And I have not been called to come to the king for these thirty days.”

12 Q uando Mardoqueu recebeu a resposta de Ester,

Then Mordecai was told what Esther had said.

13 m andou dizer-lhe: “Não pense que pelo fato de estar no palácio do rei, você será a única entre os judeus que escapará,

Mordecai answered, “Do not think that you in the king’s special house will live any more than all the other Jews.

14 p ois, se você ficar calada nesta hora, socorro e livramento surgirão de outra parte para os judeus, mas você e a família do seu pai morrerão. Quem sabe se não foi para um momento como este que você chegou à posição de rainha?”

For if you keep quiet at this time, help will come to the Jews from another place. But you and your father’s house will be destroyed. Who knows if you have not become queen for such a time as this?”

15 E ntão Ester mandou esta resposta a Mardoqueu:

Then Esther told them to say to Mordecai,

16 “ Vá reunir todos os judeus que estão em Susã, e jejuem em meu favor. Não comam nem bebam durante três dias e três noites. Eu e minhas criadas jejuaremos como vocês. Depois disso irei ao rei, ainda que seja contra a lei. Se eu tiver que morrer, morrerei”.

“Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and have them all go without food so they can pray better for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my women servants will go without food in the same way. Then I will go in to the king, which is against the law. And if I die, I die.”

17 M ardoqueu retirou-se e cumpriu todas as instruções de Ester.

So Mordecai went away and did just as Esther had told him.
