The words of Agur the son of Jakeh of Massa. The man says to Ithiel and Ucal:

2 “ Sou o mais tolo dos homens; não tenho o entendimento de um ser humano.

For sure, I am more foolish than any man, and I do not have the understanding of a man.

3 N ão aprendi sabedoria, nem tenho conhecimento do Santo.

I have not learned wisdom, and I do not know much about the Holy One.

4 Q uem subiu aos céus e desceu? Quem ajuntou nas mãos os ventos? Quem embrulhou as águas em sua capa? Quem fixou todos os limites da terra? Qual é o seu nome, e o nome do seu filho? Conte-me, se você sabe!

Who has gone up into heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in His hands? Who has gathered the waters in His coat? Who has put in place all the ends of the earth? What is His name, and what is His Son’s name? For sure you know!

5 “ Cada palavra de Deus é comprovadamente pura; ele é um escudo para quem nele se refugia.

Every word of God has been proven true. He is a safe-covering to those who trust in Him.

6 N ada acrescente às palavras dele, do contrário, ele o repreenderá e mostrará que você é mentiroso.

Do not add to His words, or He will speak strong words to you and prove you to be a liar.

7 “ Duas coisas peço que me dês antes que eu morra:

Two things I have asked of You. Do not keep me from having them before I die:

8 M antém longe de mim a falsidade e a mentira; não me dês nem pobreza nem riqueza; dá-me apenas o alimento necessário.

Take lies and what is false far from me. Do not let me be poor or rich. Feed me with the food that I need.

9 S e não, tendo demais, eu te negaria e te deixaria, e diria: ‘Quem é o Senhor ?’ Se eu ficasse pobre, poderia vir a roubar, desonrando assim o nome do meu Deus.

Then I will not be afraid that I will be full and turn my back against You and say, “Who is the Lord?” And I will not be afraid that I will be poor and steal, and bring shame on the name of my God.

10 “ Não fale mal do servo ao seu senhor; do contrário, o servo o amaldiçoará, e você levará a culpa.

Do not speak against a slave while talking with his owner, or he may curse you and you will be found guilty.

11 “ Existem os que amaldiçoam seu pai e não abençoam sua mãe;

There are those who curse their fathers, and do not honor their mothers.

12 o s que são puros aos seus próprios olhos e que ainda não foram purificados da sua impureza;

There are people who are pure in their own eyes, but are not washed from their own dirt.

13 o s que têm olhos altivos e olhar desdenhoso;

There is a kind, O, how proud are his eyes! His eyes are opened wide with pride.

14 p essoas cujos dentes são espadas e cujas mandíbulas estão armadas de facas para devorarem os necessitados desta terra e os pobres da humanidade.

There is a kind of man whose teeth are swords, whose jaws are like knives, who eat up those who are suffering from the earth, and those in need from among men.

15 “ Duas filhas tem a sanguessuga. ‘Dê! Dê!’, gritam elas. “Há três coisas que nunca estão satisfeitas, quatro que nunca dizem: ‘É o bastante!’:

The one who lives by the blood of another has two daughters, “Give,” “Give.” There are three things that are never filled, four that never say, “Enough”:

18 “ Há três coisas misteriosas demais para mim, quatro que não consigo entender:

There are three things which are too great for me, four which I do not understand:

19 o caminho do abutre no céu, o caminho da serpente sobre a rocha, o caminho do navio em alto mar, e o caminho do homem com uma moça.

The way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a snake on a rock, the way of a ship out at sea, and the way of a man with a woman.

20 “ Este é o caminho da adúltera: ela come e limpa a boca, e diz: ‘Não fiz nada de errado’.

This is the way of a woman who is not faithful in marriage: She eats and washes her mouth, and says, “I have done no wrong.”

21 “ Três coisas fazem tremer a terra, e quatro ela não pode suportar:

Under three things the earth shakes, and under four it cannot stand:

22 o escravo que se torna rei, o insensato farto de comida,

Under a servant when he becomes king, under a fool when he is filled with food,

23 a mulher desprezada que por fim se casa, e a escrava que toma o lugar de sua senhora.

under a woman who is not loved when she gets a husband, and under a woman servant when she takes the place of the woman of the house.

24 “ Quatro seres da terra são pequenos, e, no entanto, muito sábios:

There are four things that are small on the earth, but they are very wise:

25 a s formigas, criaturas de pouca força, contudo, armazenam sua comida no verão;

The ants are not a strong people, but they store up their food in the summer.

The badgers are not a strong people, but they make their houses in the rocks.

The locusts have no king, but they go as an army.

The lion, which is powerful among wild animals and does not turn away from any,

the proud rooster, the male goat, and a king when his army is with him.

32 “ Se você agiu como tolo e exaltou-se a si mesmo, ou se planejou o mal, tape a boca com a mão!

If you have been foolish in honoring yourself, or if you have planned wrong-doing, put your hand on your mouth.

33 P ois assim como bater o leite produz manteiga, e assim como torcer o nariz produz sangue, também suscitar a raiva produz contenda”.

Shaking milk makes butter, and hitting the nose brings blood. So fighting comes because of anger.
