1 L a sapienza ha costruito la sua casa, ha intagliato le sue sette colonne.

Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars:

2 H a ammazzato i suoi animali, ha mescolato il suo vino e ha imbandito la sua tavola.

She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table.

3 H a mandato fuori le sue ancelle; dai luoghi piú elevati della città essa grida:

She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the city,

4 « Chi è sciocco venga qui!». A chi è privo di senno dice:

Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,

5 « Venite, mangiate del mio pane e bevete del vino che ho mescolato.

Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.

6 L asciate la stoltezza e vivrete, e camminate per la via dell'intendimento».

Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.

7 C hi corregge lo schernitore si attira vituperio, e chi riprende l'empio riceve ingiuria.

He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.

8 N on riprendere lo schernitore, perché ti odierà; riprendi il saggio, ed egli ti amerà.

Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.

9 I nsegna al saggio e diventerà ancor piú saggio. Ammaestra il giusto e accrescerà il suo sapere,

Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

10 I l timore dell'Eterno è il principio della sapienza, e la conoscenza del Santo è l'intelligenza.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

11 P oiché per mio mezzo saranno moltiplicati i tuoi giorni e ti saranno aggiunti anni di vita,

For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.

12 S e sei saggio, sei saggio per te stesso se sei schernitore, tu solo ne porterai la pena.

If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.

13 L a donna stolta è turbolenta, è sciocca e non sa nulla.

A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knoweth nothing.

14 S iede alla porta della sua casa, su un seggio nei luoghi elevati della città,

For she sitteth at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city,

15 p er invitare quelli che passano per la via, che vanno diritti per la loro strada:

To call passengers who go right on their ways:

16 « Chi è sciocco venga qui!». E a chi è privo di senno dice:

Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,

17 « Le acque rubate sono dolci, il pane mangiato di nascosto è gustoso».

Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.

18 M a egli non sa che là ci sono i morti, che i suoi invitati sono nel profondo dello Sceol.

But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.
