1 N el terzo anno del regno di Jehoiakim, re di Giuda, Nebukadnetsar, re di Babilonia, venne contro Gerusalemme e la cinse d'assedio.

In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.

2 I l Signore diede nelle sue mani Jehoiakim, re di Giuda, assieme a una parte degli utensili della casa di DIO, che egli fece trasportare nel paese di Scinar, nella casa del suo dio e depose gli arredi nella casa del tesoro del suo dio.

And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.

3 I l re disse quindi ad Ashpenaz, capo dei suoi eunuchi, di condurgli alcuni dei figli d'Israele, sia di stirpe reale che di famiglie nobili,

And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king's seed, and of the princes;

4 g iovani in cui non ci fosse alcun difetto, ma di bell'aspetto, dotati di ogni sapienza, che avessero conoscenza e rapido intendimento, che avessero abilità di servire nel palazzo del re e ai quali si potesse insegnare la letteratura e la lingua dei Caldei.

Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.

5 I l re assegnò loro una razione giornaliera dei cibi squisiti del re e del vino che beveva egli stesso; dovevano essere educati per tre anni, al termine dei quali sarebbero passati al servizio del re.

And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king's meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.

6 T ra costoro c'erano dei figli di Giuda: Daniele, Hananiah, Mishael, e Azaria.

Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:

7 I l capo degli eunuchi mise loro altri nomi: a Daniele pose nome Beltshatsar, ad Hananiah Shadrak, a Mishael Meshak e ad Azaria Abed-nego.

Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego.

8 M a Daniele decise in cuor suo di non contaminarsi con i cibi squisiti del re e con il vino che egli stesso beveva; e chiese al capo degli eunuchi di concedergli di non contaminarsi.

But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

9 D IO fece trovare a Daniele grazia e misericordia presso il capo degli eunuchi.

Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.

10 I l capo degli eunuchi disse quindi a Daniele: «Io temo il re mio signore, che ha stabilito il vostro cibo e la vostra bevanda. Perché dovrebbe egli vedere le vostre facce piú tristi di quelle dei giovani della vostra stessa età? Cosí mettereste in pericolo la mia testa presso il re».

And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king.

11 A llora Daniele disse a Meltsar, che il capo degli eunuchi aveva preposto a Daniele, Hananiah, Mishael e Azaria:

Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,

12 « Ti prego, metti alla prova i tuoi servi per dieci giorni, e ci siano dati legumi per mangiare e acqua per bere.

Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.

13 P oi siano esaminati alla tua presenza il nostro aspetto e l'aspetto dei giovani che mangiano i cibi squisiti del re; farai quindi con i tuoi servi in base a ciò che vedrai».

Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king's meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.

14 E gli acconsentí a questa loro proposta e li mise alla prova per dieci giorni.

So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.

15 A l termine dei dieci giorni il loro aspetto appariva piú bello e avevano una carnagione piú piena di tutti i giovani che avevano mangiato i cibi squisiti del re.

And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king's meat.

16 C osí Meltsar tolse via i loro cibi squisiti e il vino che dovevano bere e diede loro legumi.

Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.

17 A tutti questi quattro giovani DIO diede conoscenza e intendimento in tutta la letteratura e sapienza; e Daniele ricevette intendimento di ogni genere di visioni e di sogni.

As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

18 A lla fine del tempo stabilito dal re perché quei giovani gli fossero condotti il capo degli eunuchi li condusse davanti a Nebukadnetsar.

Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.

19 I l re parlò con loro ma fra tutti loro non si trovò nessuno come Daniele Hananiah, Mishael e Azaria; perciò essi furono ammessi al servizio del re.

And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.

20 E su ogni argomento che richiedeva sapienza e intendimento e intorno ai quali il re li interrogasse, li trovò dieci volte superiori a tutti i maghi e astrologi che erano in tutto il suo regno.

And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.

21 C osí Daniele continuò fino al primo anno del re Ciro.

And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.
