1 F iglio mio, non dimenticare il mio insegnamento e il tuo cuore custodisca i miei comandamenti,

My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:

2 p erché ti aggiungeranno lunghi giorni, anni di vita e pace.

For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.

3 B enignità e verità non ti abbandonino; legale intorno al tuo collo, scrivile sulla tavola del tuo cuore.

Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:

4 t roverai cosí grazia e intendimento agli occhi di DIO e degli uomini.

So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.

5 C onfida nell'Eterno con tutto il tuo cuore e non appoggiarti sul tuo intendimento;

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

6 r iconoscilo in tutte le tue vie, ed egli raddrizzerà i tuoi sentieri.

In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

7 N on ritenerti savio ai tuoi occhi, temi l'Eterno e ritirati dal male;

Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil.

8 q uesto sarà guarigione per i tuoi nervi e un refrigerio per le tue ossa.

It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.

9 O nora l'Eterno con i tuoi beni e con le primizie di ogni tua rendita;

Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:

10 i tuoi granai saranno strapieni e i tuoi tini traboccheranno di mosto.

So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.

11 F iglio mio, non disprezzare la punizione dell'Eterno e non detestare la sua correzione

My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of his correction:

12 p erché l'Eterno corregge colui che egli ama, come un padre il figlio che gradisce.

For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

13 B eato l'uomo che ha trovato la sapienza e l'uomo che ottiene l'intendimento.

Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.

14 P oiché il suo guadagno è migliore del guadagno dell'argento e il suo frutto vale piú dell'oro fino.

For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.

15 E ssa è piú preziosa delle perle e tutte le cose piú deliziose non la possono eguagliare.

She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.

16 L unghezza di vita è nella sua destra, ricchezza e gloria nella sua sinistra.

Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.

17 L e sue vie sono vie dilettevoli e tutti i suoi sentieri sono pace.

Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.

18 E ssa è un albero di vita per quelli che l'afferrano, e quelli che la tengono saldamente sono beati.

She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.

19 C on la sapienza l'Eterno fondò la terra e con l'intelligenza rese stabili i cieli.

The Lord by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.

20 P er la sua conoscenza gli abissi furono aperti e le nubi stillano rugiada.

By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew.

21 F iglio mio, queste cose non si allontanino mai dai tuoi occhi. Ritieni la sapienza e la riflessione.

My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion:

22 E sse saranno vita per l'anima tua e un ornamento al tuo collo.

So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck.

23 A llora camminerai sicuro per la tua via e il tuo piede non inciamperà.

Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble.

24 Q uando ti coricherai non avrai paura; sí, ti coricherai e il sonno tuo sarà dolce.

When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.

25 N on temerai lo spavento improvviso né la rovina degli empi quando verrà,

Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh.

26 p erché l'Eterno sarà al tuo fianco e impedirà che il tuo piede sia preso in alcun laccio.

For the Lord shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.

27 N on rifiutare il bene a chi è dovuto quando è in tuo potere il farlo.

Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.

28 N on dire al tuo prossimo: «Va' e ritorna; te lo darò domani», quando hai la cosa con te.

Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee.

29 N on macchinare alcun male contro il tuo prossimo, mentre abita fiducioso con te.

Devise not evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee.

30 N on intentare causa contro nessuno senza motivo, se non ti ha fatto alcun male.

Strive not with a man without cause, if he have done thee no harm.

31 N on portare invidia all'uomo violento e non scegliere alcuna delle sue vie,

Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.

32 p erché l'Eterno ha in abominio l'uomo perverso, ma il suo consiglio è per gli uomini retti.

For the froward is abomination to the Lord: but his secret is with the righteous.

33 L a maledizione dell'Eterno è nella casa dell'empio, ma egli benedice la dimora dei giusti.

The curse of the Lord is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just.

34 C ertamente egli schernisce gli schernitori, ma fa grazia agli umili

Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly.

35 I saggi erediteranno la gloria, ma l'ignominia sarà il retaggio degli stolti.

The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools.
