1 « Guai ai figli ribelli, dice l'Eterno, che fanno progetti che non vengono da me, che contraggono alleanze ma senza il mio Spirito, per accumulare peccato su peccato;

Woe to the rebellious children, saith the Lord, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin:

2 c he vanno giú in Egitto senz'aver consultato la mia bocca, per rafforzarsi nella forza del Faraone e cercare rifugio all'ombra dell'Egitto!

That walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt!

3 M a la forza del Faraone sarà la vostra vergogna e il rifugiarsi all'ombra dell'Egitto la vostra disgrazia.

Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt your confusion.

4 P oiché i suoi principi sono andati a Tsoan e i suoi ambasciatori sono giunti a Hanes.

For his princes were at Zoan, and his ambassadors came to Hanes.

5 M a si vergogneranno tutti di un popolo che non gioverà loro affatto, che non recherà alcun aiuto o vantaggio ma solo vergogna e ignominia.

They were all ashamed of a people that could not profit them, nor be an help nor profit, but a shame, and also a reproach.

6 U na profezia contro le bestie del Neghev: attraverso un paese di calamità e di angoscia, da cui vengono la leonessa e il leone, la vipera e il serpente ardente che vola, essi portano le loro ricchezze sul dorso di asinelli e i loro tesori sulla gobba di cammelli a un popolo che non gioverà loro nulla.

The burden of the beasts of the south: into the land of trouble and anguish, from whence come the young and old lion, the viper and fiery flying serpent, they will carry their riches upon the shoulders of young asses, and their treasures upon the bunches of camels, to a people that shall not profit them.

7 P oiché l'aiuto dell'Egitto è vano e inutile; per questo io lo chiamo: "ahab-Hem-Scebeth"

For the Egyptians shall help in vain, and to no purpose: therefore have I cried concerning this, Their strength is to sit still.

8 O ra vieni, scrivi questo su una tavoletta davanti a loro e scrivilo in un libro, perché rimanga per i giorni a venire, per sempre, in perpetuo.

Now go, write it before them in a table, and note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever:

9 P oiché questo è un popolo ribelle, sono figli bugiardi, figli che non vogliono ascoltare la legge dell'Eterno,

That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the Lord:

10 c he dicono ai veggenti: on abbiate visioni e ai profeti: Non profetateci cose vere, diteci cose piacevoli, profetateci cose ingannevoli.

Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits:

11 U scite fuor di strada, abbandonate il retto sentiero, allontanate dai nostri occhi il Santo d'Israele!.

Get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.

12 P erciò cosí dice il Santo d'Israele: «Poiché voi disprezzate questa parola e confidate nell'oppressione e nella perversità e vi appoggiate su di esse,

Wherefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because ye despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and stay thereon:

13 q uesta iniquità sarà per voi come una breccia che minaccia di cadere, una sporgenza in un alto muro, il cui crollo avviene all'improvviso, in un istante,

Therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instant.

14 e si rompe come si rompe un vaso di terracotta, che uno frantuma senza pietà, senza poter trovare tra i suoi frammenti neppure un coccio con cui prendere fuoco dal focolare o attingere acqua dalla cisterna».

And he shall break it as the breaking of the potters' vessel that is broken in pieces; he shall not spare: so that there shall not be found in the bursting of it a sherd to take fire from the hearth, or to take water withal out of the pit.

15 P oiché cosí dice il Signore, l'Eterno, il Santo d'Israele: «Nel tornare a me e nel riposare in me sarete salvati; nella calma e nella fiducia sarà la vostra forza». Ma voi non avete voluto,

For thus saith the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.

16 a nzi avete detto: o, noi fuggiremo sui nostri cavalli! Perciò voi fuggirete. E: "Cavalcheremo su veloci destrieri!" Perciò quelli che v'inseguiranno saranno ancora piú veloci.

But ye said, No; for we will flee upon horses; therefore shall ye flee: and, We will ride upon the swift; therefore shall they that pursue you be swift.

17 M ille di voi fuggiranno alla minaccia di uno solo; alla minaccia di cinque vi darete alla fuga, finché rimarrete come un palo sulla cima di un monte, come uno stendardo sopra una collina».

One thousand shall flee at the rebuke of one; at the rebuke of five shall ye flee: till ye be left as a beacon upon the top of a mountain, and as an ensign on an hill.

18 P erciò l'Eterno aspetterà per farvi grazia, poi egli sarà esaltato per aver avuto compassione di voi, perché l'Eterno è un DIO di giustizia. Beati tutti quelli che sperano in lui!

And therefore will the Lord wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for the Lord is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for him.

19 O popolo di Sion che abiti a Gerusalemme, tu non piangerai piú. Egli ti farà certamente grazia, udendo la voce del tuo grido; appena udirà, ti risponderà.

For the people shall dwell in Zion at Jerusalem: thou shalt weep no more: he will be very gracious unto thee at the voice of thy cry; when he shall hear it, he will answer thee.

20 A nche se il Signore vi darà il pane d'angoscia e l'acqua d'oppressione, tuttavia quelli che ti ammaestrano non dovranno piú nascondersi, e i tuoi occhi vedranno i tuoi maestri.

And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity, and the water of affliction, yet shall not thy teachers be removed into a corner any more, but thine eyes shall see thy teachers:

21 Q uando andrete a destra o quando andrete a sinistra, le tue orecchie udranno dietro a te una parola che dirà: «Questa è la via; camminate in essa!».

And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.

22 C onsiderate come impure le, vostre immagini scolpite ricoperte d'argento e le vostre immagini di metallo fuso rivestite d'oro; le getterete via come una cosa impura, «Fuori!», direte loro.

Ye shall defile also the covering of thy graven images of silver, and the ornament of thy molten images of gold: thou shalt cast them away as a menstruous cloth; thou shalt say unto it, Get thee hence.

23 A llora egli concederà la pioggia per il tuo seme che avrai seminato nel terreno, e il pane che il suolo produrrà sarà saporito e abbondante; in quel giorno il tuo bestiame pascolerà su vasti pascoli.

Then shall he give the rain of thy seed, that thou shalt sow the ground withal; and bread of the increase of the earth, and it shall be fat and plenteous: in that day shall thy cattle feed in large pastures.

24 I buoi e gli asini che lavorano la terra mangeranno foraggi salati, ventilati con la pala e il ventilabro.

The oxen likewise and the young asses that ear the ground shall eat clean provender, which hath been winnowed with the shovel and with the fan.

25 S u ogni alto monte e su ogni colle elevato vi saranno ruscelli e corsi d'acqua nel giorno del grande massacro, quando cadranno le torri.

And there shall be upon every high mountain, and upon every high hill, rivers and streams of waters in the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall.

26 L a luce della luna sarà come la luce del sole, e la luce del sole sarà sette volte piú forte, come la luce di sette giorni, nel giorno in cui l'Eterno fascerà la piaga del suo popolo e guarirà la ferita prodotta dalle sue percosse.

Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the Lord bindeth up the breach of his people, and healeth the stroke of their wound.

27 E cco, il nome dell'Eterno viene da lontano, la sua ira è ardente e il suo carico pesante; le sue labbra sono piene d'indignazione e la sua lingua è come un fuoco divorante;

Behold, the name of the Lord cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire:

28 i l suo soffio è come un torrente, che straripa, che giunge fino al collo, per vagliare le nazioni con il vaglio della distruzione e per mettere nelle mascelle dei popoli una briglia che li faccia fuorviare.

And his breath, as an overflowing stream, shall reach to the midst of the neck, to sift the nations with the sieve of vanity: and there shall be a bridle in the jaws of the people, causing them to err.

29 A llora innalzerete un canto come la notte quando si celebra una festa; e avrete la gioia nel cuore, come chi cammina al suono del flauto per recarsi al monte dell'Eterno, alla Rocca d'Israele.

Ye shall have a song, as in the night when a holy solemnity is kept; and gladness of heart, as when one goeth with a pipe to come into the mountain of the Lord, to the mighty One of Israel.

30 Q uindi l'Eterno farà udire la sua voce maestosa e mostrerà come colpisce col suo braccio nel furore della sua ira, nella fiamma di un fuoco divorante, in mezzo a esplosioni violente, uragano e grandine di pietre.

And the Lord shall cause his glorious voice to be heard, and shall shew the lighting down of his arm, with the indignation of his anger, and with the flame of a devouring fire, with scattering, and tempest, and hailstones.

31 P oiché l'Assiria sarà colpita da spavento alla voce dell'Eterno, che la percuoterà con la verga;

For through the voice of the Lord shall the Assyrian be beaten down, which smote with a rod.

32 e d ogni colpo inferto dal bastone punitivo che l'Eterno gli farà piombare addosso, sarà accompagnato dal suono di tamburelli e di cetre. Egli combatterà contro di lei agitando la mano in modo minaccioso.

And in every place where the grounded staff shall pass, which the Lord shall lay upon him, it shall be with tabrets and harps: and in battles of shaking will he fight with it.

33 T ofet è preparato da molto tempo, esso è pronto anche per il re; egli lo ha fatto profondo e largo, sul suo rogo c'è del fuoco e legna in abbondanza; il soffio dell'Eterno, come un torrente di zolfo, lo accenderà.

For Tophet is ordained of old; yea, for the king it is prepared; he hath made it deep and large: the pile thereof is fire and much wood; the breath of the Lord, like a stream of brimstone, doth kindle it.
