Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness.

2 B ello per la sua altezza, gioia di tutta la terra è il monte Sion, dalla parte del settentrione, la città del gran Re,

Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.

3 N ei suoi palazzi DIO si è fatto conoscere come una fortezza inespugnabile.

God is known in her palaces for a refuge.

4 E cco, i re si erano radunati e avanzavano assieme,

For, lo, the kings were assembled, they passed by together.

5 m a appena la videro, rimasero sbigottiti e fuggirono terrorizzati.

They saw it, and so they marvelled; they were troubled, and hasted away.

6 L à furono presi da tremore e come da doglie di parto,

Fear took hold upon them there, and pain, as of a woman in travail.

7 a llo stesso modo che il vento orientale spezza le navi di Tarshish.

Thou breakest the ships of Tarshish with an east wind.

8 C ome avevamo udito, cosí abbiamo visto nella citta dell'Eterno degli eserciti, nella città del nostro DIO, DIO la renderà stabile per sempre.

As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God: God will establish it for ever. Selah.

9 N el tuo tempio, o DIO, noi abbiamo meditato sulla tua benignità.

We have thought of thy lovingkindness, O God, in the midst of thy temple.

10 C ome il tuo nome, o DIO, cosí la tua lode giunge all'estremità della terra, la tua destra è piena di giustizia.

According to thy name, O God, so is thy praise unto the ends of the earth: thy right hand is full of righteousness.

11 S i rallegri il monte Sion, esultino le figlie di Giuda per i tuoi giudizi.

Let mount Zion rejoice, let the daughters of Judah be glad, because of thy judgments.

12 F ate il giro di Sion, visitatela, contate le sue torri,

Walk about Zion, and go round about her: tell the towers thereof.

13 o sservate i suoi bastioni, ammirate i suoi palazzi, affinché possiate raccontarlo alla generazione futura.

Mark ye well her bulwarks, consider her palaces; that ye may tell it to the generation following.

14 P oiché questo DIO è il nostro DIO in eterno, sempre; egli sarà la nostra guida fino alla morte.

For this God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death.
