1 G uai alla corona di superbia degli ubriachi di Efraim e al fiore appassito della sua gloriosa bellezza che sta sul capo della fertile valle di quelli sopraffatti dal vino!

Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flower, which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are overcome with wine!

2 E cco, il Signore ha un uomo forte e potente, come una tempesta di grandine, un uragano distruttore, come un'alluvione di potenti acque inondanti; egli li getterà a terra con la sua mano.

Behold, the Lord hath a mighty and strong one, which as a tempest of hail and a destroying storm, as a flood of mighty waters overflowing, shall cast down to the earth with the hand.

3 L a corona di superbia degli ubriachi di Efraim sarà calpestata;

The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim, shall be trodden under feet:

4 e il fiore appassito della sua gloriosa bellezza che sta sul capo della fertile valle sarà come un fico primaticcio prima dell'estate, che uno vede; egli lo ingoia appena lo ha in mano.

And the glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley, shall be a fading flower, and as the hasty fruit before the summer; which when he that looketh upon it seeth, while it is yet in his hand he eateth it up.

5 I n quel giorno l'Eterno degli eserciti sarà una corona di gloria, uno splendido diadema per il resto del suo popolo,

In that day shall the Lord of hosts be for a crown of glory, and for a diadem of beauty, unto the residue of his people,

6 u no spirito di giustizia per colui che siede per giudicare e la forza di quelli che in battaglia respingono il nemico fino alle sue porte.

And for a spirit of judgment to him that sitteth in judgment, and for strength to them that turn the battle to the gate.

7 M a anche questi barcollano per il vino e vacillano per le bevande inebrianti; il sacerdote e il profeta barcollano per le bevande inebrianti, barcollano come se avessero visioni, tentennano nel pronunciare giudizi.

But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.

8 T utte le tavole sono piene di vomito e di sporcizia, non c'è piú posto pulito.

For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness, so that there is no place clean.

9 « A chi vuole insegnare conoscenza? A chi vuole far comprendere il messaggio? A quelli appena divezzati, a quelli appena staccati dalle mammelle?

Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.

10 P oiché è un precetto su precetto, precetto su precetto, regola su regola, regola su regola, un po' qui, un po' là».

For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:

11 S arà infatti mediante labbra balbuzienti e mediante un'altra lingua che l'Eterno parlerà a questo popolo,

For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.

12 E gli aveva loro detto: «Ecco il riposo: fate riposare lo stanco; questo è il refrigerio!». Ma essi non vollero ascoltare.

To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.

13 C osí la parola dell'Eterno è stata per loro precetto su precetto, precetto su precetto, regola su regola, regola su regola, un po' qui, un po' là, perché andassero a cadere all'indietro, fossero fatti a pezzi, presi al laccio e catturati.

But the word of the Lord was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

14 P erciò ascoltate la parola dell'Eterno, o schernitori, che dominate questo popolo che sta in Gerusalemme!

Wherefore hear the word of the Lord, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.

15 V oi dite: «Abbiamo concluso un patto con la morte, abbiamo fatto un'alleanza con lo Sceol; quando l'inondante flagello passerà, non giungerà fino a noi, perché abbiamo fatto della menzogna il nostro rifugio e ci siamo nascosti dietro la falsità».

Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:

16 P erciò cosí dice il Signore, l'Eterno: «Ecco, io pongo come fondamento in Sion una pietra, una pietra provata, una testata d'angolo preziosa, un fondamento sicuro; chi crede in essa non avrà alcuna fretta.

Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.

17 I o porrò il diritto come misura e la giustizia come piombino; la grandine spazzerà via il rifugio di menzogna e le acque sommergeranno il vostro rifugio.

Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.

18 I l vostro patto con la morte sarà annullato e la vostra alleanza con lo Sceol non reggerà; quando l'inondante flagello passerà, voi sarete da esso calpestati.

And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.

19 O gni volta che passerà, vi afferrerà, perché passerà mattina dopo mattina, di giorno e di notte; sarà un vero terrore solo l'udirne il resoconto.

From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.

20 I l letto infatti sarà troppo corto per distendervisi, e la coperta troppo stretta per avvolgervisi.

For the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it: and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it.

21 P oiché l'Eterno si leverà come al monte Peratsim, si adirerà come nella valle di Gabaon, per compiere la sua opera, la sua inaudita opera, per eseguire il suo lavoro, il suo lavoro insolito.

For the Lord shall rise up as in mount Perazim, he shall be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon, that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act.

22 O r dunque non fate gli schernitori, perché i vostri legami non abbiano a rafforzarsi. Poiché io ho udito, da parte del Signore, l'Eterno degli eserciti, che è deciso un completo sterminio di tutto il paese.

Now therefore be ye not mockers, lest your bands be made strong: for I have heard from the Lord God of hosts a consumption, even determined upon the whole earth.

23 P orgete orecchio e ascoltate la mia voce, state attenti e ascoltate la mia parola!

Give ye ear, and hear my voice; hearken, and hear my speech.

24 L 'agricoltore ara tutto il giorno per seminare? Continua forse a rompere e a sarchiare il suo terreno?

Doth the plowman plow all day to sow? doth he open and break the clods of his ground?

25 Q uando ne ha appianato la superficie, non vi semina l'aneto e non vi sparge il comino, non vi mette il frumento a solchi, l'orzo nel luogo designato e il farro lungo i confini?

When he hath made plain the face thereof, doth he not cast abroad the fitches, and scatter the cummin, and cast in the principal wheat and the appointed barley and the rie in their place?

26 I l suo DIO gl'insegna la regola da seguire e lo ammaestra.

For his God doth instruct him to discretion, and doth teach him.

27 L 'aneto non si trebbia con la trebbiatrice né si fa passare sul comino la ruota del carro; ma l'aneto si batte con il bastone e il comino con la verga.

For the fitches are not threshed with a threshing instrument, neither is a cart wheel turned about upon the cummin; but the fitches are beaten out with a staff, and the cummin with a rod.

28 I l frumento per il pane deve essere schiacciato; perciò non lo si pesta per sempre, ma vi si fanno passare sopra la ruota del carro e i cavalli, senza però schiacciarlo.

Bread corn is bruised; because he will not ever be threshing it, nor break it with the wheel of his cart, nor bruise it with his horsemen.

29 A nche questo procede dall'Eterno degli eserciti, che è meraviglioso nel suo consiglio e grande in sapienza».

This also cometh forth from the Lord of hosts, which is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working.
