1 E lihu continuò a parlare e disse:

Elihu spake moreover, and said,

2 « Ti pare una cosa giusta quando dici: "Sono piú giusto di Dio"?

Thinkest thou this to be right, that thou saidst, My righteousness is more than God's?

3 I nfatti hai detto: "che ti giova? Quale utilità avrei del mio peccato?".

For thou saidst, What advantage will it be unto thee? and, What profit shall I have, if I be cleansed from my sin?

4 R isponderò io a te e ai tuoi amici assieme a te.

I will answer thee, and thy companions with thee.

5 C ontempla il cielo e osserva; guarda le nuvole, che sono piú alte di te.

Look unto the heavens, and see; and behold the clouds which are higher than thou.

6 S e pecchi, che effetto ha su di lui? Se moltiplichi i tuoi misfatti, che danno gli arrechi?

If thou sinnest, what doest thou against him? or if thy transgressions be multiplied, what doest thou unto him?

7 S e sei giusto, che cosa gli dai, o che cosa riceve dalla tua mano?

If thou be righteous, what givest thou him? or what receiveth he of thine hand?

8 L a tua malvagità può solamente nuocere a un uomo come te, e la tua giustizia può solamente giovare a un figlio d'uomo.

Thy wickedness may hurt a man as thou art; and thy righteousness may profit the son of man.

9 S i grida per il gran numero delle oppressioni, si grida in cerca di aiuto a motivo della forza dei potenti;

By reason of the multitude of oppressions they make the oppressed to cry: they cry out by reason of the arm of the mighty.

10 m a nessuno dice: "Dov'è Dio, il mio creatore, che nella notte concede canti di gioia,

But none saith, Where is God my maker, who giveth songs in the night;

11 c he a noi insegna piú cose che alle bestie dei campi e ci fa piú saggi degli uccelli del cielo?

Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven?

12 C osí si grida, ma egli non risponde a motivo della superbia dei malvagi.

There they cry, but none giveth answer, because of the pride of evil men.

13 C ertamente Dio non darà ascolto a discorsi vuoti, e l'Onnipotente non vi farà attenzione.

Surely God will not hear vanity, neither will the Almighty regard it.

14 A nche se tu dici di non vederlo, la tua causa sta davanti a lui, e tu devi aspettarlo.

Although thou sayest thou shalt not see him, yet judgment is before him; therefore trust thou in him.

15 M a ora, perché nella sua ira non punisce e non fa troppo caso alle trasgressioni,

But now, because it is not so, he hath visited in his anger; yet he knoweth it not in great extremity:

16 G iobbe apre inutilmente le labbra e accumula parole senza senno».

Therefore doth Job open his mouth in vain; he multiplieth words without knowledge.
