1 A nd the word of Samuel came to all Israel. The Ark of God Captured Now Israel went out to battle against the Philistines, and encamped beside Ebenezer; and the Philistines encamped in Aphek.

В това време Израел беше във война с филистимците и разположи стан близо до Евен-езер; а филистимците разположиха стан в Афек.

2 T hen the Philistines put themselves in battle array against Israel. And when they joined battle, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand men of the army in the field.

И филистимците се опълчиха против Израел; и когато започна битката, Израел се разбяга пред филистимците и около четири хиляди мъже бяха убити на полесражението.

3 A nd when the people had come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, “Why has the Lord defeated us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord from Shiloh to us, that when it comes among us it may save us from the hand of our enemies.”

А когато народът се върна в стана, Израелевите старейшини казаха: Защо ни порази Господ днес пред филистимците? Нека донесем тук ковчега за плочите на Господния завет от Сило, така че, като дойде сред нас, да ни избави от ръката на неприятелите ни.

4 S o the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from there the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts, who dwells between the cherubim. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

И така, народът изпрати вестоносци в Сило и донесоха оттам ковчега на завета на Господа на Силите, Който обитава между херувимите. И двамата Илийеви сина, Офний и Финеес, бяха там с ковчега на Божия завет.

5 A nd when the ark of the covenant of the Lord came into the camp, all Israel shouted so loudly that the earth shook.

След като ковчегът на Господния завет дойде в стана, целият Израел извика със силен глас, така че земята проехтя.

6 N ow when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, “What does the sound of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews mean? ” Then they understood that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp.

А филистимците, като чуха шума от викането, си казаха: Какво значи това шумно и силно викане в стана на евреите? И научиха, че Господният ковчег дошъл в стана.

7 S o the Philistines were afraid, for they said, “God has come into the camp!” And they said, “Woe to us! For such a thing has never happened before.

Тогава филистимците се уплашиха, защото си казваха: Бог е дошъл в стана. Горко ни! Защото такова нещо не е ставало досега.

8 W oe to us! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.

Горко ни! Кой ще ни избави от ръката на тези мощни богове? Тези са боговете, които поразиха египтяните с всякакъв вид напасти в пустинята.

9 B e strong and conduct yourselves like men, you Philistines, that you do not become servants of the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Conduct yourselves like men, and fight!”

Укрепете се, филистимци, бъдете мъжествени, за да не станете слуги на евреите, както те станаха на вас! Бъдете мъжествени и се бийте с тях.

10 S o the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and every man fled to his tent. There was a very great slaughter, and there fell of Israel thirty thousand foot soldiers.

Тогава филистимците влязоха в бой; Израел беше поразен и всеки побегна в шатъра си. Стана голямо поражение, паднаха тридесет хиляди пешаци от Израел

11 A lso the ark of God was captured; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died. Death of Eli

и Божият ковчег беше пленен; а двамата Илийеви сина, Офний и Финеес, бяха убити. Смъртта на Илий

12 T hen a man of Benjamin ran from the battle line the same day, and came to Shiloh with his clothes torn and dirt on his head.

Тогава един човек от Вениамин се завтече от битката и в същия ден отиде в Сило, с раздрани дрехи и с пръст на главата си.

13 N ow when he came, there was Eli, sitting on a seat by the wayside watching, for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city and told it, all the city cried out.

И като стигна, ето, Илий седеше на стола си край пътя и пазеше, защото сърцето му трепереше за Божия ковчег. И когато човекът дойде в града и извести това, целият град извика.

14 W hen Eli heard the noise of the outcry, he said, “What does the sound of this tumult mean? ” And the man came quickly and told Eli.

А Илий, като чу виковете, каза: Какво значи този шум и глъч? И човекът дойде бързо и извести на Илий.

15 E li was ninety-eight years old, and his eyes were so dim that he could not see.

Илий беше тогава на деветдесет и осем години; очите му бяха отслабнали и не можеше да вижда.

16 T hen the man said to Eli, “I am he who came from the battle. And I fled today from the battle line.” And he said, “What happened, my son?”

Човекът каза на Илий: Аз идвам от сражението; днес избягах от битката. Илий попита: Какво стана, сине мой?

17 S o the messenger answered and said, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been a great slaughter among the people. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead; and the ark of God has been captured.”

И вестоносецът отговори: Израел побегна пред филистимците. При това стана голямо поражение между народа, освен това и двамата ти сина Офний и Финеес умряха и Божият ковчег е пленен.

18 T hen it happened, when he made mention of the ark of God, that Eli fell off the seat backward by the side of the gate; and his neck was broken and he died, for the man was old and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years. Ichabod

А щом спомена за Божия ковчег, Илий падна от стола по гръб край портата, вратът му се пречупи и умря; защото беше стар и тежък човек. Той съди Израел четиридесет години.

19 N ow his daughter-in-law, Phinehas’s wife, was with child, due to be delivered; and when she heard the news that the ark of God was captured, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and gave birth, for her labor pains came upon her.

А снаха му, Финеесовата жена, която беше в напреднала бременност, щом чу известието, че Божият ковчег бил пленен и че свекърът ѝ и мъжът ѝ умрели, преви се и роди, защото болките ѝ я хванаха.

20 A nd about the time of her death the women who stood by her said to her, “Do not fear, for you have borne a son.” But she did not answer, nor did she regard it.

И като умираше, жените, които стояха около нея, ѝ казаха: Не бой се, защото си родила син. Но тя не отговори, нито обърна внимание.

21 T hen she named the child Ichabod, saying, “The glory has departed from Israel!” because the ark of God had been captured and because of her father-in-law and her husband.

Тя нарече детето Ихавод, като казваше: Славата се изгуби от Израел (защото Божият ковчег бил пленен и защото свекърът ѝ и мъжът ѝ умрели );

22 A nd she said, “The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.”

каза също: Славата се изгуби от Израел, защото Божият ковчег беше пленен.
