1 ¶ The word which came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, when king Zedekiah sent unto him Pashur the son of Melchiah, and Zephaniah the priest, the son of Maaseiah, saying,

Palabra que vino a Jeremías de parte del Señor cuando el rey Sedequías lo envió a Pasur, hijo de Malquías, y al sacerdote Sofonías, hijo de Maasías, diciendo:

2 E nquire, I pray thee, of the LORD for us; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon makes war against us; peradventure the LORD will deal with us according to all his wondrous works, and he will go up from upon us.

Consulta ahora de nuestra parte al Señor, porque Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, nos hace la guerra; tal vez el Señor haga con nosotros conforme a todas sus maravillas, para que el enemigo se retire de nosotros.

3 A nd said Jeremiah unto them: Thus shall ye say to Zedekiah

Entonces Jeremías les dijo: Así diréis a Sedequías:

4 T hus hath the LORD God of Israel said: Behold, I turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands with which ye fight against the king of Babylon and against the Chaldeans, which besiege you outside the walls, and I will assemble them into the midst of this city.

“Así dice el Señor, Dios de Israel: ‘He aquí, yo haré volver atrás las armas de guerra que tenéis en vuestras manos, con las cuales peleáis contra el rey de Babilonia y contra los caldeos que os sitian fuera de los muros, y las reuniré en medio de esta ciudad.

5 A nd I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger and in fury and in great wrath.

‘Y yo pelearé contra vosotros con mano extendida y brazo poderoso, y con ira, furor y gran enojo.

6 A nd I will smite the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast: they shall die of a great pestilence.

‘Heriré a los habitantes de esta ciudad, y hombres y animales morirán de gran pestilencia.

7 A nd afterward, thus hath the LORD said, I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah, and his slaves and the people and such as are left in this city from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those that seek their souls; and he shall smite them with the edge of the sword; he shall not forgive them, neither have pity, nor have mercy.

‘Y después’ —declara el Señor — ‘a Sedequías, rey de Judá, a sus siervos, al pueblo y a los que sobrevivan en esta ciudad de la pestilencia, de la espada y del hambre, los entregaré en manos de Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, en manos de sus enemigos y en manos de los que buscan sus vidas; y él los herirá a filo de espada. No los perdonará ni les tendrá piedad ni compasión.’”

8 ¶ And unto this people thou shalt say, Thus hath the LORD said: Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death.

Y dirás a este pueblo: “Así dice el Señor: ‘He aquí, pongo delante de vosotros el camino de la vida y el camino de la muerte.

9 H e that abides in this city shall die by the sword or by the famine or by the pestilence, but he that goes out and falls to the Chaldeans that besiege you, he shall live, and his soul shall be unto him for a spoil.

‘El que se quede en esta ciudad morirá a espada, de hambre y de pestilencia; pero el que salga y se entregue a los caldeos que os sitian, vivirá, y tendrá su propia vida como botín.

10 F or I have set my face against this city for evil, and not for good, saith the LORD; it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.

‘Porque he puesto mi rostro contra esta ciudad para mal, y no para bien’ —declara el Señor —. ‘Será entregada en manos del rey de Babilonia, quien le prenderá fuego.’”

11 A nd to the house of the king of Judah, say, Hear ye the word of the LORD;

Y di a la casa del rey de Judá: “Oíd la palabra del Señor:

12 O house of David, thus hath the LORD said: Execute judgment early and deliver him that is oppressed out of the hand of the oppressor lest my fury go forth like fire, and burn so that no one can quench it because of the evil of your doings.

Casa de David, así dice el Señor: ‘Haced justicia cada mañana, y librad al despojado de manos de su opresor, no sea que salga como fuego mi furor, y arda y no haya quien lo apague, a causa de la maldad de vuestras obras.

13 B ehold, I am against thee, O inhabitant of the valley of the rock of the plain (saith the LORD), which say, Who shall come up against us? or who shall enter into our habitations?

‘He aquí, yo estoy contra ti, moradora del valle, roca de la llanura’ —declara el Señor — ‘los que decís: “¿Quién descenderá contra nosotros ? ¿Quién entrará en nuestras moradas ?”

14 I will visit you according to the fruit of your doings, said the LORD: and I will kindle a fire in your forest, and it shall devour all things round about it.

‘Yo os castigaré conforme al fruto de vuestras obras’ —declara el Señor — ‘y prenderé fuego en su bosque que consumirá todos sus alrededores.’”
