1 N ow a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister Martha.

¶ Estaba entonces enfermo uno llamado Lázaro, de Betania, la aldea de María y de Marta su hermana.

2 A nd it was that Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.

(Y María, cuyo hermano Lázaro estaba enfermo, fue la que ungió al Señor con ungüento, y limpió sus pies con sus cabellos).

3 T he sisters therefore sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.

Enviaron, pues, sus hermanas a él, diciendo: Señor, he aquí, el que amas está enfermo.

4 B ut when Jesus heard it, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified thereby.

Y oyéndolo Jesús, dijo: Esta enfermedad no es para muerte, sino para gloria de Dios, para que el Hijo de Dios sea glorificado por ella.

5 N ow Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

Y amaba Jesús a Marta, y a su hermana, y a Lázaro.

6 W hen therefore he heard that he was sick, he abode at that time two days in the place where he was.

Cuando oyó pues que estaba enfermo, permaneció aún dos días en aquel lugar donde estaba.

7 T hen after this he saith to the disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.

Luego, después de esto, dijo a sus discípulos: Vamos a Judea otra vez.

8 T he disciples say unto him, Rabbi, the Jews were but now seeking to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?

Le dicen los discípulos: Rabí, antes procuraban los Judíos apedrearte, ¿y otra vez vas allá?

9 J esus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.

Respondió Jesús: ¿No tiene el día doce horas? El que anduviere de día, no tropieza, porque ve la luz de este mundo.

10 B ut if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.

Mas el que anduviere de noche, tropieza, porque no hay luz en él.

11 T hese things spake he: and after this he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus is fallen asleep; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.

Dicho esto, les dice después: Lázaro nuestro amigo duerme; mas voy a despertarle del sueño.

12 T he disciples therefore said unto him, Lord, if he is fallen asleep, he will recover.

Le dijeron entonces sus discípulos: Señor, si duerme, salvo estará.

13 N ow Jesus had spoken of his death: but they thought that he spake of taking rest in sleep.

Mas esto decía Jesús de la muerte de él; y ellos pensaron que hablaba del sueño de dormir.

14 T hen Jesus therefore said unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

Entonces, pues, Jesús les dijo claramente: Lázaro ha muerto;

15 A nd I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.

y me alegro por vosotros, que yo no haya estado allí, para que creáis; mas vamos a él.

16 T homas therefore, who is called Didymus, said unto his fellow-disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.

Dijo entonces Tomás, el que se dice el Dídimo, a sus condiscípulos: Vamos también nosotros, para que muramos con él.

17 S o when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.

¶ Vino pues Jesús, y halló que hacía ya cuatro días que estaba en el sepulcro.

18 N ow Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off;

Y Betania estaba cerca de Jerusalén, como quince estadios;

19 a nd many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.

y muchos de los judíos habían venido a Marta y a María, a consolarlas de su hermano.

20 M artha therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary still sat in the house.

Entonces Marta, cuando oyó que Jesús venía, salió a recibirle; mas María se estuvo en la casa.

21 M artha therefore said unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

Y Marta dijo a Jesús: Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, mi hermano no habría muerto;

22 A nd even now I know that, whatsoever thou shalt ask of God, God will give thee.

mas también sé ahora, que todo lo que pidieres de Dios, te dará Dios.

23 J esus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.

Le dice Jesús: Resucitará tu hermano.

24 M artha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

Marta le dice: Yo sé que resucitará en la resurrección en el día postrero.

25 J esus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth on me, though he die, yet shall he live;

Le dice Jesús: YO SOY la resurrección y la vida; el que cree en mí, aunque esté muerto, vivirá.

26 a nd whosoever liveth and believeth on me shall never die. Believest thou this?

Y todo aquel que vive y cree en mí, no morirá eternamente. ¿Crees esto?

27 S he saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, even he that cometh into the world.

Le dice: Sí Señor; yo he creído que tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, que has venido al mundo.

28 A nd when she had said this, she went away, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Teacher is her, and calleth thee.

Y dicho esto, se fue, y llamó en secreto a María su hermana, diciendo: El Maestro está aquí y te llama.

29 A nd she, when she heard it, arose quickly, and went unto him.

Ella, cuando lo oyó, se levantó prestamente y vino a él.

30 ( Now Jesus was not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met him.)

(Que aún no había llegado Jesús a la aldea, mas estaba en aquel lugar donde Marta le había salido a recibir.)

31 T he Jews then who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, supposing that she was going unto the tomb to weep there.

Entonces los judíos que estaban en casa con ella, y la consolaban, como vieron que María se había levantado prestamente, y había salido, la siguieron, diciendo: Va al sepulcro a llorar allí.

32 M ary therefore, when she came where Jesus was, and saw him, fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

Mas María, como vino donde estaba Jesús, viéndole, se derribó a sus pies, diciéndole: Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, no hubiera muerto mi hermano.

33 W hen Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,

¶ Jesús entonces, como la vio llorando, y a los judíos que habían venido juntamente con ella llorando, se embraveció en Espíritu, se alborotó a sí mismo,

34 a nd said, Where have ye laid him? They say unto him, Lord, come and see.

y dijo: ¿Dónde le pusisteis? Le dicen: Señor, ven, y ve.

35 J esus wept.

Y lloró Jesús.

36 T he Jews therefore said, Behold how he loved him!

Dijeron entonces los judíos: Mirad cómo le amaba.

37 B ut some of them said, Could not this man, who opened the eyes of him that was blind, have caused that this man also should not die?

Y unos de ellos dijeron: ¿No podía éste que abrió los ojos al ciego, hacer que éste no muriera?

38 J esus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.

Y Jesús, por eso, embraveciéndose otra vez en sí mismo, vino al sepulcro donde había una cueva, la cual tenía una piedra encima.

39 J esus saith, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time the body decayeth; for he hath been dead four days.

Dice Jesús: Quitad la piedra. Marta, la hermana del que se había muerto, le dice: Señor, hiede ya, que es de cuatro días.

40 J esus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou believedst, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

Jesús le dice: ¿No te he dicho que, si creyeres, verás la gloria de Dios?

41 S o they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou heardest me.

Entonces quitaron la piedra de donde el muerto había sido puesto. Y Jesús, alzando los ojos arriba, dijo: Padre, gracias te doy que me has oído.

42 A nd I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the multitude that standeth around I said it, that they may believe that thou didst send me.

Que yo sabía que siempre me oyes; mas por causa de la compañía que está alrededor, lo dije, para que crean que tú me has enviado.

43 A nd when he had thus spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

Y habiendo dicho estas cosas, clamó a gran voz: Lázaro, ven fuera.

44 H e that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave-clothes; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

Entonces el que había estado muerto, salió, atadas las manos y los pies con vendas; y su rostro estaba envuelto en un sudario. Les dice Jesús: Desatadle, y dejadle ir.

45 M any therefore of the Jews, who came to Mary and beheld that which he did, believed on him.

¶ Entonces muchos de los judíos que habían venido a María, y habían visto lo que había hecho Jesús, creyeron en él.

46 B ut some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done.

Mas unos de ellos fueron a los fariseos, y les dijeron lo que Jesús había hecho.

47 T he chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many signs.

Y los sumo sacerdotes y los fariseos juntaron concilio, y decían: ¿Qué hacemos? Porque este hombre hace muchas señales.

48 I f we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.

Si le dejamos así, todos creerán en él; y vendrán los romanos, y quitarán nuestro lugar y la nación.

49 B ut a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,

Y Caifás, uno de ellos, sumo sacerdote de aquel año, les dijo: Vosotros no sabéis nada;

50 n or do ye take account that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.

ni pensáis que nos conviene que un hombre muera por el pueblo, y no que toda la nación se pierda.

51 N ow this he said not of himself: but, being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation;

Mas esto no lo dijo de sí mismo; sino que, como era el sumo sacerdote de aquel año, profetizó que Jesús había de morir por la nación;

52 a nd not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God that are scattered abroad.

y no solamente por aquella nación, mas también para que juntara en uno los hijos de Dios que estaban dispersos.

53 S o from that day forth they took counsel that they might put him to death.

Así que, desde aquel día consultaban juntos para matarle.

54 J esus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed thence into the country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim; and there he tarried with the disciples.

De manera que Jesús ya no andaba manifiestamente entre los judíos; mas se fue de allí a la tierra que está junto al desierto, a una ciudad que se llama Efraín; y se estaba allí con sus discípulos.

55 N ow the passover of the Jews was at hand: and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, to purify themselves.

Y la Pascua de los judíos estaba cerca; y muchos subieron de la tierra a Jerusalén antes de la Pascua, para purificarse;

56 T hey sought therefore for Jesus, and spake one with another, as they stood in the temple, What think ye? That he will not come to the feast?

y buscaban a Jesús, y hablaban los unos con los otros estando en el Templo: ¿Qué os parece? ¿Qué no vendrá a la fiesta?

57 N ow the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commandment, that, if any man knew where he was, he should show it, that they might take him.

Y los sumos sacerdotes y los fariseos habían dado mandamiento, que si alguno se enteraba dónde estaba, lo manifestara, para que le prendieran.
