1 W hen thou sittest to eat with a ruler, Consider diligently him that is before thee;

¶ Cuando te sentares a comer con algún señor, considera bien lo que estuviere delante de ti;

2 A nd put a knife to thy throat, If thou be a man given to appetite.

y pon cuchillo a tu garganta, si tienes gran apetito.

3 B e not desirous of his dainties; Seeing they are deceitful food.

No codicies sus manjares, porque es pan engañoso.

4 W eary not thyself to be rich; Cease from thine own wisdom.

¶ No trabajes por ser rico; desiste de tu propia sabiduría.

5 W ilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings, Like an eagle that flieth toward heaven.

¿Has de poner tus ojos en las riquezas, siendo ningunas? Porque se harán alas, como alas de águila, y volarán al cielo.

6 E at thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, Neither desire thou his dainties:

¶ No comas pan de hombre de mal ojo, ni codicies sus manjares;

7 F or as he thinketh within himself, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; But his heart is not with thee.

porque cual es su pensamiento en su alma, tal es él. Come y bebe, te dirá; mas su corazón no está contigo.

8 T he morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, And lose thy sweet words.

¿Comiste tu parte? La vomitarás; y perderás tus suaves palabras.

9 S peak not in the hearing of a fool; For he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

¶ No hables a oídos del loco; porque menospreciará la prudencia de tus razones.

10 R emove not the ancient landmark; And enter not into the fields of the fatherless:

¶ No traspases el término antiguo, ni entres en la heredad de los huérfanos;

11 F or their Redeemer is strong; He will plead their cause against thee.

porque el redentor de ellos es el Fuerte, el cual juzgará la causa de ellos contra ti.

12 A pply thy heart unto instruction, And thine ears to the words of knowledge.

¶ Aplica tu corazón al castigo, y tus oídos a las palabras de sabiduría.

13 W ithhold not correction from the child; For if thou beat him with the rod, he will not die.

No detengas el castigo del niño; porque si lo hirieres con vara, no morirá.

14 T hou shalt beat him with the rod, And shalt deliver his soul from Sheol.

Tú lo herirás con vara, y librarás su alma del Seol.

15 M y son, if thy heart be wise, My heart will be glad, even mine:

Hijo mío, si tu corazón fuere sabio, también a mí se me alegrará el corazón;

16 Y ea, my heart will rejoice, When thy lips speak right things.

mis entrañas también se alegrarán, cuando tus labios hablaren cosas rectas.

17 L et not thy heart envy sinners; But be thou in the fear of Jehovah all the day long:

¶ No tenga tu corazón envidia de los pecadores, antes persevera en el temor del SEÑOR en todo tiempo;

18 F or surely there is a reward; And thy hope shall not be cut off.

porque ciertamente hay fin, y tu esperanza no será cortada.

19 H ear thou, my son, and be wise, And guide thy heart in the way.

¶ Oye tú, hijo mío, y sé sabio, y endereza tu corazón al camino.

20 B e not among winebibbers, Among gluttonous eaters of flesh:

No estés con los borrachos de vino, ni con los glotones de carne;

21 F or the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty; And drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.

porque el bebedor y el comilón empobrecerán; y el sueño hará vestir vestidos rotos.

22 H earken unto thy father that begat thee, And despise not thy mother when she is old.

Oye a tu padre, a aquel que te engendró; y cuando tu madre envejeciere, no la menosprecies.

23 B uy the truth, and sell it not; Yea, wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

Compra la verdad, y no la vendas; la sabiduría, la enseñanza, y la inteligencia.

24 T he father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; And he that begetteth a wise child will have joy of him.

Mucho se alegrará el padre del justo; y el que engendró sabio se gozará con él.

25 L et thy father and thy mother be glad, And let her that bare thee rejoice.

Alégrense tu padre y tu madre, y gócese la que te dio a luz.

26 M y son, give me thy heart; And let thine eyes delight in my ways.

Dame, hijo mío, tu corazón, y miren tus ojos por mis caminos.

27 F or a harlot is a deep ditch; And a foreign woman is a narrow pit.

Porque sima profunda es la ramera, y pozo angosto la extraña.

28 Y ea, she lieth in wait as a robber, And increaseth the treacherous among men.

También ella, como robador, acecha, y multiplica entre los hombres los prevaricadores.

29 W ho hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? Who hath complaining? who hath wounds without cause? Who hath redness of eyes?

¶ ¿Para quién será el ay? ¿Para quién el ay? ¿Para quién las rencillas? ¿Para quién las quejas? ¿Para quién las heridas en balde? ¿Para quién lo amoratado de los ojos?

30 T hey that tarry long at the wine; They that go to seek out mixed wine.

Para los que se detienen junto al vino, para los que van buscando la mixtura.

31 L ook not thou upon the wine when it is red, When it sparkleth in the cup, When it goeth down smoothly:

No mires al vino cuando rojea, cuando resplandece su color en el vaso, se entra suavemente;

32 A t the last it biteth like a serpent, And stingeth like an adder.

mas al fin morderá como serpiente, y como basilisco dará dolor.

33 T hine eyes shall behold strange things, And thy heart shall utter perverse things.

Tus ojos mirarán las extrañas, y tu corazón hablará perversidades.

34 Y ea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, Or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.

Y serás como el que duerme en medio del mar, y como el que se acuesta junto al timón.

35 T hey have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not hurt; They have beaten me, and I felt it not: When shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.

Y dirás: Me hirieron, mas no me dolió; me azotaron, mas no lo sentí; cuando despertare, aun lo volveré a buscar.
