1 E n cuanto amaneció, y luego de reunirse los principales sacerdotes, los ancianos, los escribas y todo el tribunal para ponerse de acuerdo, ataron a Jesús y se lo llevaron a Pilato.

And immediately when it was morning, the chief priests, with the elders and scribes and the whole council, held a consultation; and when they had bound Jesus, they took Him away '> violently] and handed Him over to Pilate.

2 É ste le preguntó: «¿Eres tú el Rey de los judíos?» Y Jesús le respondió: «Tú lo dices.»

And Pilate inquired of Him, Are You the King of the Jews? And He replied, It is as you say.

3 L os principales sacerdotes lo acusaban de muchas cosas,

And the chief priests kept accusing Him of many things.

4 a sí que Pilato volvió a preguntarle: «¿No vas a responder? ¡Mira de cuántas cosas te acusan!»

And Pilate again asked Him, Have You no answer to make? See how many charges they are bringing against You!

5 P ero Jesús ni aun así respondió, lo que sorprendió mucho a Pilato. Jesús sentenciado a muerte

But Jesus made no further answer at all, so that Pilate wondered and marveled.

6 E n el día de la fiesta Pilato acostumbraba poner en libertad a un preso, el que la gente quisiera.

Now at the Feast he set free for them any one prisoner whom they requested.

7 H abía uno que se llamaba Barrabás, que estaba preso con sus compañeros de motín porque en una revuelta habían cometido un homicidio.

And among the rioters in the prison who had committed murder in the insurrection there was a man named Barabbas.

8 C uando la multitud se aproximó, comenzó a pedirle a Pilato que hiciera lo que acostumbraba hacer.

And the throng came up and began asking Pilate to do as he usually did for them.

9 P ilato les preguntó: «¿Quieren que ponga en libertad al Rey de los judíos?»

And he replied to them, Do you wish me to set free for you the King of the Jews?

10 Y es que Pilato sabía que los principales sacerdotes lo habían entregado por envidia.

For he was aware that it was '> because they were prompted] by envy that the chief priests had delivered Him up.

11 P ero los principales sacerdotes incitaron a la multitud para que Pilato soltara más bien a Barrabás.

But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to get him to release for them Barabbas instead.

12 P ilato les preguntó: «¿Y qué quieren que haga con el que ustedes llaman Rey de los judíos?»

And again Pilate said to them, Then what shall I do with the Man Whom you call the King of the Jews?

13 Y ellos volvieron a gritar: «¡Crucifícalo!»

And they shouted back again, Crucify Him!

14 P ilato les decía: «¿Pues qué crimen ha cometido?» Pero ellos gritaban más todavía: «¡Crucifícalo!»

But Pilate said to them, Why? What has He done that is evil? But they shouted with all their might all the more, Crucify Him '> at once]!

15 P ilato optó por complacer al pueblo y puso en libertad a Barrabás; luego mandó que azotaran a Jesús, y lo entregó para que lo crucificaran.

So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, set Barabbas free for them; and after having Jesus whipped, he handed over to be crucified.

16 L os soldados lo llevaron al interior del atrio, es decir, al pretorio, y llamaron a toda la compañía.

Then the soldiers led Him away to the courtyard inside the palace, that is, the Praetorium, and they called the entire detachment of soldiers together.

17 L o vistieron de púrpura, le colocaron una corona tejida de espinas,

And they dressed Him in purple, and, weaving together a crown of thorns, they placed it on Him.

18 y comenzaron a saludarlo: «¡Salve, Rey de los judíos!»

And they began to salute Him, Hail (greetings, good health to You, long life to You), King of the Jews!

19 L o golpeaban en la cabeza con una caña, y lo escupían, y doblaban las rodillas para hacerle reverencias.

And they struck His head with a staff made of a reed and spat on Him and kept bowing their knees in homage to Him.

20 D espués de burlarse de él, le quitaron la ropa de púrpura, lo vistieron con sus propios vestidos, y lo sacaron de allí para crucificarlo. Crucifixión y muerte de Jesús

And when they had making sport of Him, they took the purple off of Him and put His own clothes on Him. And they led Him out to crucify Him.

21 A uno que volvía del campo y que pasaba por allí lo obligaron a llevar la cruz. Ese hombre se llamaba Simón de Cirene, y era padre de Alejandro y de Rufo.

And they forced a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, who was coming in from the field (country), to carry His cross.

22 L levaron a Jesús a un lugar llamado Gólgota, que significa «Lugar de la Calavera».

And they led Him to Golgotha, meaning The Place of a Skull.

23 L e dieron a beber vino mezclado con mirra, pero él no lo tomó.

And they give Him wine mingled with myrrh, but He would not take it.

24 D espués de crucificarlo, se repartieron sus vestidos y los sortearon para ver qué le tocaría a cada uno de ellos.

And they crucified Him; and they divided His garments and distributed them among themselves, throwing lots for them to decide who should take what.

25 C uando lo crucificaron eran las nueve de la mañana.

And it was the third hour (about nine o’clock in the morning) when they crucified Him.

26 C omo razón de su condena pusieron este epígrafe: «EL REY DE LOS JUDÍOS».

And the inscription of the accusation against Him was written above, The King of the Jews.

27 C on él crucificaron también a dos ladrones, uno a su derecha y el otro a su izquierda.

And with Him they crucified two robbers, one on right hand and one on His left.

And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, He was counted among the transgressors.

29 L os que pasaban lo insultaban, y mientras meneaban la cabeza decían: «Oye, tú, que derribas el templo de Dios y en tres días lo reedificas,

And those who passed by kept reviling Him and reproaching Him abusively in harsh and insolent language, wagging their heads and saying, Aha! You Who would destroy the temple and build it in three days,

30 ¡ sálvate a ti mismo y desciende de la cruz!»

Now rescue Yourself '> from death], coming down from the cross!

31 A sí también se burlaban de él los principales sacerdotes, y se sumaban a los escribas para decir: «¡Salvó a otros, pero a sí mismo no puede salvarse!

So also the chief priests, with the scribes, made sport of Him to one another, saying, He rescued others '> from death]; Himself He is unable to rescue.

32 ¡ Que baje ahora de la cruz el Cristo, el Rey de Israel, para que podamos ver y creer!» Y también le hacían burla los que estaban crucificados con él.

Let the Christ (the Messiah), the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and trust in and rely on Him and adhere to Him! Those who were crucified with Him also reviled and reproached Him.

33 D esde el mediodía y hasta las tres de la tarde hubo tinieblas sobre toda la tierra,

And when the sixth hour (about midday) had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour (about three o’clock).

34 y a las tres de la tarde Jesús clamó a gran voz: «Eloi, Eloi, ¿lama sabactani?», que significa «Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has desamparado?»

And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?—which means, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me '> deserting Me and leaving Me helpless and abandoned]?

35 A l oírlo, algunos de los que estaban allí decían: «Escuchen, está llamando a Elías.»

And some of those standing by, hearing it, said, See! He is calling Elijah!

36 U no de ellos corrió a empapar en vinagre una esponja, la puso en una caña, y le dio a beber, al tiempo que decía: «Déjenlo, veamos si Elías viene a bajarlo.»

And one man ran, and, filling a sponge with vinegar (a mixture of sour wine and water), put it on a staff made of a reed and gave it to Him to drink, saying, Hold off! Let us see whether Elijah come to take Him down.

37 P ero Jesús lanzó un fuerte grito y murió.

And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed out His life.

38 E n ese momento el velo del templo se rasgó en dos, de arriba abajo,

And the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

39 y el centurión que estaba frente a él, al verlo morir así, dijo: «En verdad, este hombre era Hijo de Dios.»

And when the centurion who stood facing Him saw Him expire this way, he said, Really, this Man was God’s Son!

40 A lgunas mujeres estaban allí, mirando de lejos. Entre ellas estaban María Magdalena, María, la que era madre de Jacobo el menor y de José, y Salomé.

Now some women were there also, looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome,

41 E llas habían seguido y atendido a Jesús cuando él estaba en Galilea. Pero había también otras muchas mujeres, que habían ido con él a Jerusalén. Jesús es sepultado

Who, when was in Galilee, were in the habit of accompanying and ministering to Him; and also many other who had come up with Him to Jerusalem.

42 A l caer la tarde del día de la preparación, es decir, la víspera del día de reposo,

As evening had already come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, before the Sabbath,

43 J osé de Arimatea fue y con mucha osadía se presentó ante Pilato para pedirle el cuerpo de Jesús. Este José era un miembro importante del tribunal, y también esperaba el reino de Dios.

Joseph, he of Arimathea, noble and honorable in rank and a respected member of the council (Sanhedrin), who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, daring the consequences, took courage and ventured to go to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

44 P ilato se sorprendió al saber que Jesús ya había muerto, así que mandó llamar al centurión y le preguntó si, en efecto, Jesús ya había muerto.

But Pilate wondered whether He was dead so soon, and, having called the centurion, he asked him whether was already dead.

45 L uego de que el centurión le confirmó la noticia, Pilato entregó a José el cuerpo de Jesús.

And when he learned from the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.

46 J osé fue y bajó de la cruz el cuerpo de Jesús, lo envolvió en una sábana que había comprado, y lo puso en un sepulcro que estaba cavado en una peña. Luego, hizo rodar una piedra para sellar la entrada del sepulcro.

And Joseph bought a linen cloth '> for swathing dead bodies], and, taking Him down from the cross, he rolled Him up in the linen cloth and placed Him in a tomb which had been hewn out of a rock. Then he rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.

47 M ientras tanto, María Magdalena y María la madre de José miraban dónde ponían el cuerpo.

And Mary Magdalene and Mary of Joses were '> attentively] observing where He was laid.
