1 U n día, mientras Jesús estaba en el templo enseñando al pueblo y anunciándoles las buenas noticias, llegaron los principales sacerdotes y los escribas, junto con los ancianos,

One day as Jesus was instructing the people in the temple '> porches] and preaching the good news (the Gospel), the chief priests and the scribes came up with the elders (members of the Sanhedrin)

2 y le preguntaron: «¿Con qué autoridad haces todo esto? ¿Quién te ha dado esta autoridad?»

And said to Him, Tell us by what authority You are doing these things? Or who is it who gave You this authority?

3 J esús les dijo: «Yo también voy a hacerles una pregunta. Díganme:

He replied to them, I will also ask you a question. Now answer Me:

4 E l bautismo de Juan, ¿era del cielo, o de este mundo?»

Was the baptism of John from heaven, or from men?

5 E llos empezaron a discutir entre sí: «Si decimos que era del cielo, nos dirá: “Entonces, ¿por qué no le creyeron?”

And they argued and discussed and reasoned together with themselves, saying, If we reply, From heaven, He will say, Why then did you not believe him?

6 Y si decimos que era de los hombres, todo el pueblo nos matará a pedradas, pues están convencidos de que Juan era un profeta.»

But if we answer, From men, all the people will stone us to death, for they are long since firmly convinced that John was a prophet.

7 Y respondieron que no sabían de dónde era.

So they replied that they did not know from where it came.

8 E ntonces Jesús les dijo: «Pues yo tampoco les diré con qué autoridad hago estas cosas.» Los labradores malvados

Then Jesus said to them, Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

9 L uego comenzó a contarle a la gente esta parábola: «Un hombre plantó una viña, se la arrendó a unos labradores, y se ausentó por mucho tiempo.

Then He began to relate to the people this parable ( this story to figuratively portray what He had to say): A man planted a vineyard and leased it to some vinedressers and went into another country for a long stay.

10 A su debido tiempo, envió a uno de sus siervos para que los labradores le entregaran la parte de lo que la viña había producido; pero los labradores lo golpearon y lo mandaron con las manos vacías.

When the season came, he sent a bond servant to the tenants, that they might give him of the fruit of the vineyard; but the tenants beat ( thrashed) him and sent him away empty-handed.

11 V olvió a enviar a otro siervo; pero ellos golpearon y humillaron también a éste, y lo enviaron con las manos vacías.

And he sent still another servant; him they also beat ( thrashed) and dishonored and insulted him disgracefully and sent him away empty-handed.

12 E nvió entonces a un tercer siervo, pero también a éste lo hirieron y lo echaron de allí.

And he sent yet a third; this one they wounded and threw out.

13 E ntonces el dueño de la viña dijo: “¿Qué haré? Voy a enviar a mi hijo amado. Tal vez, cuando lo vean, le tendrán respeto.”

Then the owner of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; it is probable that they will respect him.

14 P ero cuando los labradores lo vieron, se dijeron unos a otros: “Éste es el heredero. Vamos a matarlo, para quedarnos con la herencia.”

But when the tenants saw him, they argued among themselves, saying, This is the heir; let us kill him, so that the inheritance may be ours.

15 A sí que lo expulsaron de la viña, y lo mataron. ¿Qué creen ustedes que el dueño de la viña hará con ellos?

So they drove him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?

16 P ues irá y matará a esos labradores, y dará su viña a otros.» Al oír esto, la gente exclamó: «¡Dios nos libre!»

He will come and '> utterly] put an end to those tenants and will give the vineyard to others. When they heard this, they said, May it never be!

17 P ero Jesús los miró fijamente y les dijo: «¿Qué significa esta escritura que dice: »“La piedra que desecharon los constructores ha venido a ser la piedra angular?”

But looked at them and said, What then is this that is written: The Stone which the builders rejected has become the chief Stone of the corner ?

18 T odo el que caiga sobre esa piedra, se hará pedazos; y si ella cae sobre alguien, lo aplastará por completo.» La cuestión del tributo

Everyone who falls on that Stone will be broken; but upon whomever It falls, It will crush him '> scatter him as dust].

19 E n ese mismo instante los principales sacerdotes y los escribas trataron de echarle mano, pues comprendieron que, al contar esa parábola, Jesús se refería a ellos. Pero tenían miedo de la gente;

The scribes and the chief priests desired and tried to find a way to arrest Him at that very hour, but they were afraid of the people; for they discerned that He had related this parable against them.

20 e ntonces enviaron espías que parecían gente buena, para que lo acecharan y atraparan a Jesús en sus propias palabras, y así poder ponerlo bajo el poder y la autoridad del gobernador.

So they watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be upright (honest and sincere), that they might lay hold of something He might say, so as to turn Him over to the control and authority of the governor.

21 L os espías le preguntaron: «Maestro, sabemos que dices y enseñas con rectitud, y que no discriminas a nadie, sino que en verdad enseñas el camino de Dios.

They asked Him, Teacher, we know that You speak and teach what is right, and that You show no partiality to anyone but teach the way of God honestly and in truth.

22 ¿ Nos está permitido pagar tributo al César, o no?»

Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar or not?

23 P ero Jesús se dio cuenta de sus malas intenciones, y les dijo:

But He recognized and understood their cunning and unscrupulousness and said to them,

24 « Muéstrenme una moneda. ¿De quién son la imagen y la inscripción?» Ellos respondieron: «Del César.»

Show Me a denarius (a coin)! Whose image and inscription does it have? They answered, Caesar’s.

25 E ntonces Jesús les dijo: «Pues den al César lo que es del César, y a Dios lo que es de Dios.»

He said to them, Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.

26 A sí que no pudieron sorprenderlo ante el pueblo en ninguna palabra; y admirados de su respuesta, no dijeron más. La pregunta sobre la resurrección

So they could not in the presence of the people take hold of anything He said to turn it against Him; but marveling at His reply, they were silent.

27 A lgunos de los saduceos, que decían que no hay resurrección, le preguntaron:

Also there came to Him some Sadducees, those who say that there is no resurrection.

28 « Maestro, Moisés nos escribió: “Si el hermano de alguien tiene esposa y muere sin tener hijos, el hermano del difunto debe casarse con la viuda y darle descendencia a su hermano muerto.”

And they asked Him a question, saying, Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, leaving a wife and no children, the man shall take the woman and raise up offspring for his brother.

29 P ues bien, se dio el caso de siete hermanos, y el primero de ellos se casó, y murió sin tener hijos.

Now there were seven brothers; and the first took a wife and died without children.

30 E l segundo se casó con la viuda, pero también murió sin tener hijos.

And the second

31 E l tercero también se casó con ella, y así todos los siete, y todos murieron sin dejar descendencia.

And then the third took her, and in like manner all seven, and they died, leaving no children.

32 F inalmente, murió también la mujer.

Last of all, the woman died also.

33 A sí que, en la resurrección, ¿esposa de cuál de ellos será la viuda, ya que los siete estuvieron casados con ella?»

Now in the resurrection whose wife will the woman be? For the seven married her.

34 E ntonces Jesús les dijo: «La gente de este mundo se casa, y se da en casamiento,

And Jesus said to them, The people of this world and present age marry and are given in marriage;

35 p ero los que sean considerados dignos de alcanzar el mundo venidero y la resurrección de entre los muertos, no se casarán ni se darán en casamiento,

But those who are considered worthy to gain that other world and that future age and to attain to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage;

36 p orque ya no podrán morir, sino que serán semejantes a los ángeles, y son hijos de Dios por ser hijos de la resurrección.

For they cannot die again, but they are angel-like and equal to angels. And being sons of and sharers in the resurrection, they are sons of God.

37 P ero en cuanto a que los muertos han de resucitar, aun Moisés lo enseñó en el pasaje de la zarza, pues llama al Señor, “Dios de Abrahán, Dios de Isaac y Dios de Jacob”.

But that the dead are raised '> from death]—even Moses made known and showed in the passage concerning the bush, where he calls the Lord, The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.

38 P orque Dios no es Dios de muertos, sino de vivos, pues para él todos viven.»

Now He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to Him all men are alive and they are alive unto Him.

39 A lgunos de los escribas le respondieron: «Maestro, has dicho bien.»

And some of the scribes replied, Teacher, you have spoken well and expertly '> so that there is no room for blame].

40 Y no se atrevieron a preguntarle nada más. ¿De quién es hijo el Cristo?

For they did not dare to question Him further.

41 E ntonces él les dijo: «¿Cómo pueden decir que el Cristo es hijo de David?

But He asked them, How can people say that the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One) is David’s Son?

42 D avid mismo dice, en el libro de los Salmos: »“El Señor le dijo a mi Señor: ‘Siéntate a mi derecha,

For David himself says in Book of Psalms, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at My right hand

43 h asta que ponga a tus enemigos por estrado de tus pies.’”

Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.

44 » Y si David lo llama Señor, ¿cómo entonces puede ser su hijo?» Jesús acusa a los escribas

So David calls Him Lord; how then is He his Son?

45 C omo todo el pueblo lo estaba escuchando, Jesús les dijo a sus discípulos:

And with all the people listening, He said to His disciples,

46 « Cuídense de los escribas, porque les gusta pasearse con ropas largas, y que los saluden en las plazas, y sentarse en las primeras sillas de las sinagogas, y en los lugares más importantes de los banquetes.

Beware of the scribes, who like to walk about in long robes and love to be saluted in places where people congregate and love the front and best seats in the synagogues and places of distinction at feasts,

47 S e adueñan de los bienes de las viudas, y para disimular todo esto hacen largas oraciones. ¡Pero ellos recibirán una mayor condenación!»

Who make away with and devour widows’ houses, and with pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation (the heavier sentence, the severer punishment).
