1 C uando Jesús terminó de decir todo esto, dijo a sus discípulos:

When Jesus had ended this discourse, He said to His disciples,

2 « Como ustedes saben, dentro de dos días se celebra la pascua, y el Hijo del Hombre será entregado para ser crucificado.»

You know that the Passover is in two days—and the Son of Man will be delivered up treacherously to be crucified.

3 E ntonces los principales sacerdotes, los escribas, y los ancianos del pueblo se reunieron en el patio de Caifás, el sumo sacerdote,

Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the '> open] court of the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas,

4 y se confabularon para aprehender con engaños a Jesús, y matarlo.

And consulted together in order to arrest Jesus by stratagem secretly and put Him to death.

5 P ero decían: «Que no sea durante la fiesta, para que no se alborote el pueblo.» Jesús es ungido en Betania

But they said, It must not be during the Feast, for fear that there will be a riot among the people.

6 M ientras Jesús estaba en Betania, en casa de Simón el leproso,

Now when Jesus came back to Bethany and was in the house of Simon the leper,

7 s e le acercó una mujer. Llevaba un vaso de alabastro con un perfume muy caro, que derramó sobre la cabeza de Jesús mientras él estaba sentado a la mesa.

A woman came up to Him with an alabaster flask of very precious perfume, and she poured it on His head as He reclined at table.

8 A l ver esto, los discípulos se enojaron y dijeron: «¿Pero qué desperdicio es éste?

And when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, For what purpose is all this waste?

9 ¡ Pudo haberse vendido esto por mucho dinero, y ser dado a los pobres!»

For this perfume might have been sold for a large sum and the money given to the poor.

10 J esús se dio cuenta de esto, y les dijo: «¿Por qué molestan a esta mujer? Lo que ha hecho conmigo es una buena obra.

But Jesus, fully aware of this, said to them, Why do you bother the woman? She has done a noble (praiseworthy and beautiful) thing to Me.

11 P orque ustedes siempre tendrán a los pobres, pero a mí no siempre me tendrán.

For you always have the poor among you, but you will not always have Me.

12 L o que ha hecho ella al derramar sobre mí este perfume, es prepararme para la sepultura.

In pouring this perfume on My body she has done something to prepare Me for My burial.

13 D e cierto les digo que en cualquier parte del mundo donde este evangelio sea proclamado, también se contará lo que esta mujer ha hecho, y así será recordada.» Judas ofrece entregar a Jesús

Truly I tell you, wherever this good news (the Gospel) is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will be told also, in memory of her.

14 E ntonces Judas Iscariote, que era uno de los doce, fue a ver a los principales sacerdotes,

Then one of the Twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests

15 y les dijo: «¿Cuánto me darían, si yo les entrego a Jesús?» Y ellos le asignaron treinta piezas de plata.

And said, What are you willing to give me if I hand Him over to you? And they weighed out for and paid to him thirty pieces of silver.

16 D esde entonces Judas buscaba el mejor momento de entregar a Jesús. Institución de la Cena del Señor

And from that moment he sought a fitting opportunity to betray Him.

17 E l primer día de la fiesta de los panes sin levadura, los discípulos se acercaron a Jesús y le preguntaron: «¿Dónde quieres que te preparemos la comida de la pascua?»

Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and said to Him, Where do You wish us to prepare for You to eat the Passover supper?

18 É l les indicó ir a la ciudad, a la casa de cierto hombre, y decirle: «El Maestro dice: “Mi tiempo está cerca. Celebraré la pascua con mis discípulos en tu casa.”»

He said, Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, The Master says: My time is near; I will keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.

19 L os discípulos hicieron lo que Jesús les mandó, y prepararon la pascua.

And accordingly the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they made ready the Passover supper.

20 C uando llegó la noche, Jesús se sentó a la mesa con los doce,

When it was evening, He was reclining at table with the twelve disciples.

21 y mientras comían dijo: «De cierto les digo, que uno de ustedes me va a traicionar.»

And as they were eating, He said, Solemnly I say to you, one of you will betray Me!

22 E llos se pusieron muy tristes, y cada uno comenzó a preguntarle: «¿Soy yo, Señor?»

They were exceedingly pained and distressed and deeply hurt and sorrowful and began to say to Him one after another, Surely it cannot be I, Lord, can it?

23 É l les respondió: «El que mete la mano conmigo en el plato, es el que me va a entregar.

He replied, He who has dipped his hand in the same dish with Me will betray Me!

24 A decir verdad, el Hijo del Hombre sigue su camino, como está escrito acerca de él, ¡pero ay de aquél que lo traiciona! ¡Más le valdría no haber nacido!»

The Son of Man is going just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better (more profitable and wholesome) for that man if he had never been born!

25 E ntonces Judas, el que lo iba a traicionar, le preguntó: «¿Soy yo, Maestro?» Y Jesús le respondió: «Tú lo has dicho.»

Judas, the betrayer, said, Surely it is not I, is it, Master? He said to him, You have stated.

26 M ientras comían, Jesús tomó el pan y lo bendijo; luego lo partió y se lo dio a sus discípulos, y les dijo: «Tomen, coman; esto es mi cuerpo.»

Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread and, praising God, gave thanks and asked Him to bless it to their use, and when He had broken it, He gave it to the disciples and said, Take, eat; this is My body.

27 D espués tomó la copa, y luego de dar gracias, la entregó a sus discípulos y les dijo: «Beban de ella todos,

And He took a cup, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, Drink of it, all of you;

28 p orque esto es mi sangre del nuevo pacto, que es derramada por muchos, para perdón de los pecados.

For this is My blood of the new covenant, which '> ratifies the agreement and] is being poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

29 Y o les digo que, desde ahora, no volveré a beber de este fruto de la vid, hasta el día en que beba con ustedes el vino nuevo en el reino de mi Padre.» Jesús anuncia la negación de Pedro

I say to you, I shall not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it with you new and of superior quality in My Father’s kingdom.

30 L uego de cantar el himno, fueron al monte de los Olivos.

And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

31 A llí Jesús les dijo: «Todos ustedes se escandalizarán de mí esta noche, porque está escrito: “Heriré al pastor, y las ovejas del rebaño serán dispersadas.”

Then Jesus said to them, You will all be offended and stumble and fall away because of Me this night, for it is written, I will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.

32 P ero después de que yo haya resucitado, iré delante de ustedes a Galilea.»

But after I am raised up, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.

33 P edro le dijo: «Aunque todos se escandalicen de ti, yo nunca me escandalizaré.»

Peter declared to Him, Though they all are offended and stumble and fall away because of You, I will never do so.

34 J esús le dijo: «De cierto te digo que esta noche, antes que el gallo cante, me negarás tres veces.»

Jesus said to him, Solemnly I declare to you, this very night, before a single rooster crows, you will deny and disown Me three times.

35 P edro le dijo: «Aun cuando tenga yo que morir contigo, jamás te negaré.» Y todos los discípulos dijeron lo mismo. Jesús ora en Getsemaní

Peter said to Him, Even if I must die with You, I will not deny or disown You! And all the disciples said the same thing.

36 E ntonces Jesús fue con ellos a un lugar que se llama Getsemaní, y dijo a sus discípulos: «Siéntense aquí, mientras yo voy a orar en aquel lugar.»

Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and He told His disciples, Sit down here while I go over yonder and pray.

37 J esús llevó consigo a Pedro y a los dos hijos de Zebedeo, y comenzó a ponerse triste y muy angustiado.

And taking with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, He began to show grief and distress of mind and was deeply depressed.

38 E ntonces les dijo: «Quédense aquí, y velen conmigo, porque siento en el alma una tristeza de muerte.»

Then He said to them, My soul is very sad and deeply grieved, so that I am almost dying of sorrow. Stay here and keep awake and keep watch with Me.

39 U nos pasos más adelante, se inclinó sobre su rostro y comenzó a orar. Y decía: «Padre mío, si es posible, haz que pase de mí esta copa. Pero que no sea como yo lo quiero, sino como lo quieres tú.»

And going a little farther, He threw Himself upon the ground on His face and prayed saying, My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but as You will and desire.

40 L uego volvió con sus discípulos, y como los encontró durmiendo, le dijo a Pedro: «¿Así que no han podido mantenerse despiertos conmigo ni una hora?

And He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and He said to Peter, What! Are you so utterly unable to stay awake and keep watch with Me for one hour?

41 M anténganse despiertos, y oren, para que no caigan en tentación. A decir verdad, el espíritu está dispuesto, pero la carne es débil.»

All of you must keep awake (give strict attention, be cautious and active) and watch and pray, that you may not come into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

42 O tra vez fue y oró por segunda vez, y dijo: «Padre mío, si esta copa no puede pasar de mí sin que yo la beba, que se haga tu voluntad.»

Again a second time He went away and prayed, My Father, if this cannot pass by unless I drink it, Your will be done.

43 U na vez más fue y los halló durmiendo, porque los ojos se les caían de sueño.

And again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were weighed down with sleep.

44 E ntonces los dejó y volvió a irse, y por tercera vez oró con las mismas palabras.

So, leaving them again, He went away and prayed for the third time, using the same words.

45 L uego volvió con sus discípulos y les dijo: «Sigan durmiendo y descansando. Miren que ha llegado la hora, y el Hijo del Hombre es entregado en manos de pecadores.

Then He returned to the disciples and said to them, Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of especially wicked sinners '> whose way or nature it is to act in opposition to God].

46 ¡ Vamos, levántense, que ya se acerca el que me traiciona!» Arresto de Jesús

Get up, let us be going! See, My betrayer is at hand!

47 T odavía estaba hablando Jesús cuando llegó Judas, que era uno de los doce. Con él venía mucha gente armada con espadas y palos, de parte de los principales sacerdotes y de los ancianos del pueblo.

As He was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, came up, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and elders of the people.

48 E l que lo estaba traicionando les había dado esta contraseña: «Al que yo le dé un beso, ése es; arréstenlo.»

Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, The One I shall kiss is the Man; seize Him.

49 E nseguida se acercó a Jesús, y le dijo: «¡Hola, Maestro!» Y le dio un beso.

And he came up to Jesus at once and said, Hail (greetings, good health to You, long life to You), Master! And he embraced Him and kissed Him with warmth and devotion.

50 J esús le dijo: «Amigo, ¿a qué vienes?» Entonces aquellos hombres se acercaron, le echaron mano y lo arrestaron.

Jesus said to him, Friend, for what are you here? Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and arrested Him.

51 P ero uno de los que estaban con Jesús extendió su mano, sacó su espada, e hirió a un siervo del sumo sacerdote, y le cortó una oreja.

And behold, one of those who were with Jesus reached out his hand and drew his sword and, striking the body servant of the high priest, cut off his ear.

52 E ntonces Jesús le dijo: «Vuelve tu espada a su lugar. Quien esgrime la espada, muere por la espada.

Then Jesus said to him, Put your sword back into its place, for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.

53 ¿ No te parece que yo puedo orar a mi Padre, y que él puede mandarme ahora mismo más de doce legiones de ángeles?

Do you suppose that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will immediately provide Me with more than twelve legions '> more than 80, 000] of angels?

54 P ero entonces ¿cómo se cumplirían las Escrituras? Porque es necesario que así suceda.»

But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must come about this way?

55 E n ese momento, Jesús dijo a la gente: «¿Han venido a arrestarme con espadas y palos, como si fuera yo un ladrón? ¡Todos los días me sentaba a enseñarles en el templo, y ustedes no me aprehendieron!

At that moment Jesus said to the crowds, Have you come out with swords and clubs as against a robber to capture Me? Day after day I was accustomed to sit in the porches and courts of the temple teaching, and you did not arrest Me.

56 P ero todo esto sucede, para que se cumpla lo escrito por los profetas.» Entonces todos los discípulos lo abandonaron y huyeron. Jesús ante el concilio

But all this has taken place in order that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples deserted Him and, fleeing, escaped.

57 L os que aprehendieron a Jesús lo llevaron ante el sumo sacerdote Caifás, donde estaban reunidos los escribas y los ancianos.

But those who had seized Jesus took Him away to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had assembled.

58 P ero Pedro lo siguió de lejos hasta el patio del sumo sacerdote, y entró y se sentó con los alguaciles, para ver cómo terminaba aquello.

But Peter followed Him at a distance, as far as the courtyard of the high priest’s home; he even went inside and sat with the guards to see the end.

59 L os principales sacerdotes, y los ancianos y todo el concilio, buscaban algún falso testimonio contra Jesús, para condenarlo a muerte;

Now the chief priests and the whole council (the Sanhedrin) sought to get false witnesses to testify against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death;

60 p ero no lo hallaron, aunque se presentaron muchos testigos falsos. Finalmente, llegaron dos testigos falsos

But they found none, though many witnesses came forward. At last two men came forward

61 y dijeron: «Éste dijo: “Puedo derribar el templo de Dios, y reedificarlo en tres días.”»

And testified, This Fellow said, I am able to tear down the sanctuary of the temple of God and to build it up again in three days.

62 E l sumo sacerdote se levantó y le preguntó: «¿No vas a responder? ¡Mira lo que éstos dicen contra ti!»

And the high priest stood up and said, Have You no answer to make? What about this that these men testify against You?

63 P ero Jesús guardó silencio. Entonces el sumo sacerdote le dijo: «Te ordeno en el nombre del Dios viviente, que nos digas si tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios.»

But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest said to Him, I call upon you to swear by the living God, and tell us whether you are the Christ, the Son of God.

64 J esús le respondió: «Tú lo has dicho. Y además les digo que, desde ahora, verán al Hijo del Hombre sentado a la diestra del Poderoso, y venir en las nubes del cielo.»

Jesus said to him, You have stated. More than that, I tell you: You will in the future see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Almighty and coming on the clouds of the sky.

65 E l sumo sacerdote se rasgó entonces las vestiduras y dijo: «¡Ha blasfemado! ¿Qué necesidad tenemos de más testigos? ¡Ustedes acaban de oír su blasfemia!

Then the high priest tore his clothes and exclaimed, He has uttered blasphemy! What need have we of further evidence? You have now heard His blasphemy.

66 ¿ Qué les parece?» Y ellos respondieron: «¡Que merece la muerte!»

What do you think now? They answered, He deserves to be put to death.

67 E ntonces unos lo escupieron en el rostro, y le dieron puñetazos; y otros lo abofeteaban

Then they spat in His face and struck Him with their fists; and some slapped Him in the face,

68 y decían: «¡Profetízanos, Cristo; dinos quién te golpeó!» Pedro niega a Jesús

Saying, Prophesy to us, You Christ (the Messiah)! Who was it that struck You?

69 M ientras Pedro estaba sentado afuera, en el patio, se le acercó una criada y le dijo: «También tú estabas con Jesús el galileo.»

Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and one maid came up to him and said, You were also with Jesus the Galilean!

70 P ero él lo negó delante de todos, y dijo: «No sé de qué hablas.»

But he denied it falsely before them all, saying, I do not know what you mean.

71 Y se fue a la puerta. Pero otra criada lo vio, y dijo a los que estaban allí: «También éste estaba con Jesús el nazareno.»

And when he had gone out to the porch, another maid saw him, and she said to the bystanders, This fellow was with Jesus the Nazarene!

72 P ero él lo negó otra vez, y hasta juró: «No conozco a ese hombre.»

And again he denied it and disowned Him with an oath, saying, I do not know the Man!

73 U n poco después, los que estaban por allí se acercaron a Pedro y le dijeron: «Sin lugar a dudas, tú también eres uno de ellos, porque hasta tu manera de hablar te delata.»

After a little while, the bystanders came up and said to Peter, You certainly are one of them too, for even your accent betrays you.

74 E ntonces él comenzó a maldecir, y a jurar: «No conozco a ese hombre.» Y enseguida cantó el gallo.

Then Peter began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, I do not even know the Man! And at that moment a rooster crowed.

75 E ntonces Pedro se acordó de que Jesús le había dicho: «Antes de que cante el gallo, me negarás tres veces.» Y saliendo de allí, lloró amargamente.

And Peter remembered Jesus’ words, when He had said, Before a single rooster crows, you will deny and disown Me three times. And he went outside and wept bitterly.
