1 C uando llegó la mañana, todos los principales sacerdotes y los ancianos del pueblo se confabularon contra Jesús, para condenarlo a muerte.

When it was morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people held a consultation against Jesus to put Him to death;

2 L o ataron y se lo llevaron para entregárselo a Poncio Pilato, el gobernador. Muerte de Judas

And they bound Him and led Him away and handed Him over to Pilate the governor.

3 C uando Judas, el que lo había traicionado, vio que Jesús había sido condenado, se arrepintió y devolvió las treinta monedas de plata a los principales sacerdotes y a los ancianos.

When Judas, His betrayer, saw that was condemned, '> afflicted in mind and troubled for his former folly; and] with remorse he brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders,

4 L es dijo: «He pecado al entregar sangre inocente.» Pero ellos le dijeron: «¿A nosotros qué nos importa? ¡Allá tú!»

Saying, I have sinned in betraying innocent blood. They replied, What is that to us? See to that yourself.

5 E ntonces Judas arrojó en el templo las monedas de plata, y después de eso salió y se ahorcó.

And casting the pieces of silver into the '> sanctuary of the] temple, he departed; and he went off and hanged himself.

6 L os principales sacerdotes tomaron las monedas y dijeron: «No está bien echarlas en el tesoro de las ofrendas, porque es el precio de sangre derramada.»

But the chief priests, picking up the pieces of silver, said, It is not legal to put these in the treasury, for it is the price of blood.

7 Y después de ponerse de acuerdo, compraron con ellas el campo del alfarero, para sepultar allí a los extranjeros.

So after consultation they bought with them the potter’s field in which to bury strangers.

8 P or eso hasta el día de hoy aquel campo se llama «Campo de sangre».

Therefore that piece of ground has been called the Field of Blood to the present day.

9 A sí se cumplió lo dicho por el profeta Jeremías: «Y tomaron las treinta monedas de plata, que es el precio estimado por los hijos de Israel,

Then were fulfilled the words spoken by Jeremiah the prophet when he said, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of Him on Whom a price had been set by some of the sons of Israel,

10 y las usaron para comprar el campo del alfarero, como me ordenó el Señor.» Pilato interroga a Jesús

And they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.

11 J esús estaba en pie ante el gobernador, y éste le preguntó: «¿Eres tú el Rey de los judíos?» Jesús le respondió: «Tú lo dices.»

Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked Him, Are you the King of the Jews? Jesus said to him, You have stated.

12 P ero ante las acusaciones de los principales sacerdotes y de los ancianos no respondió nada.

But when the charges were made against Him by the chief priests and elders, He made no answer.

13 E ntonces Pilato le preguntó: «¿No oyes de cuántas cosas te acusan?»

Then Pilate said to Him, Do You not hear how many and how serious are the things they are testifying against You?

14 P ero Jesús no le respondió ni una palabra, de tal manera que el gobernador se quedó muy asombrado. Jesús es sentenciado a muerte

But He made no reply to him, not even to a single accusation, so that the governor marveled greatly.

15 A hora bien, en el día de la fiesta el gobernador acostumbraba poner en libertad a un preso, el que el pueblo quisiera.

Now at the Feast the governor was in the habit of setting free for the people any one prisoner whom they chose.

16 E n aquel momento tenían un preso muy famoso, llamado Barrabás.

And at that time they had a notorious prisoner whose name was Barabbas.

17 P ilato se reunió con ellos y les preguntó: «¿A quién quieren que les suelte: a Barrabás, o a Jesús, al que llaman el Cristo?»

So when they had assembled for this purpose, Pilate said to them, Whom do you want me to set free for you, Barabbas, or Jesus Who is called Christ?

18 Y es que Pilato sabía que ellos lo habían entregado por envidia.

For he knew that it was because of envy that they had handed Him over to him.

19 M ientras él estaba sentado en el tribunal, su mujer mandó a decirle: «No tengas nada que ver con ese justo, pues por causa de él hoy he tenido un sueño terrible.»

Also, while he was seated on the judgment bench, his wife sent him a message, saying, Have nothing to do with that just and upright Man, for I have had a painful experience today in a dream because of Him.

20 P ero los principales sacerdotes y los ancianos persuadieron a la multitud de que pidieran a Barrabás, y que mataran a Jesús.

But the chief priests and the elders prevailed on the people to ask for Barabbas, and put Jesus to death.

21 E l gobernador les preguntó: «¿A cuál de los dos quieren que les suelte?» Y ellos dijeron: «¡A Barrabás!»

Again the governor said to them, Which of the two do you wish me to release for you? And they said, Barabbas!

22 P ilato les preguntó: «¿Qué debo hacer entonces con Jesús, al que llaman el Cristo?» Y todos le dijeron: «¡Que lo crucifiquen!»

Pilate said to them, Then what shall I do with Jesus Who is called Christ?

23 Y el gobernador les dijo: «Pero ¿qué mal ha hecho?» Pero ellos gritaban aún más, y decían: «¡Que lo crucifiquen!»

They all replied, Let Him be crucified! And he said, Why? What has He done that is evil? But they shouted all the louder, Let Him be crucified!

24 A l ver Pilato que no conseguía nada, sino que se armaba más alboroto, tomó agua, se lavó las manos en presencia del pueblo, y dijo: «Allá ustedes. Yo me declaro inocente de la muerte de este justo.»

So when Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but rather that a riot was about to break out, he took water and washed his hands in the presence of the crowd, saying, I am not guilty of nor responsible for this righteous Man’s blood; see to it yourselves.

25 Y todo el pueblo respondió: «¡Que recaiga su muerte sobre nosotros y sobre nuestros hijos!»

And all the people answered, Let His blood be on us and on our children!

26 E ntonces les soltó a Barrabás, y luego de azotar a Jesús lo entregó para que lo crucificaran.

So he set free for them Barabbas; and he Jesus whipped, and delivered Him up to be crucified.

27 L os soldados del gobernador llevaron a Jesús al pretorio, y alrededor de él reunieron a toda la compañía;

Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the palace, and they gathered the whole battalion about Him.

28 l uego lo desnudaron, le echaron encima un manto escarlata;

And they stripped off His clothes and put a scarlet robe ( garment of dignity and office worn by Roman officers of rank) upon Him,

29 s obre la cabeza le pusieron una corona tejida de espinas, y en la mano derecha le pusieron una caña; entonces se arrodillaron delante de él, y burlonamente le decían: «¡Salve, Rey de los judíos!»

And, weaving a crown of thorns, they put it on His head and put a reed (staff) in His right hand. And kneeling before Him, they made sport of Him, saying, Hail (greetings, good health to You, long life to You), King of the Jews!

30 A demás, le escupían y con una caña le golpeaban la cabeza.

And they spat on Him, and took the reed (staff) and struck Him on the head.

31 D espués de burlarse de él, le quitaron el manto, le pusieron sus vestidos, y lo llevaron para crucificarlo. Crucifixión y muerte de Jesús

And when they finished making sport of Him, they stripped Him of the robe and put His own garments on Him and led Him away to be crucified.

32 A l salir de allí, se encontraron con un hombre de Cirene que se llamaba Simón, y lo obligaron a llevar la cruz.

As they were marching forth, they came upon a man of Cyrene named Simon; this man they forced to carry the cross of Jesus.

33 L legaron a un lugar llamado Gólgota, que significa «Lugar de la Calavera»,

And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means The Place of a Skull,

34 y allí le dieron a beber vinagre mezclado con hiel; pero Jesús, después de haberlo probado, no quiso beberlo.

They offered Him wine mingled with gall to drink; but when He tasted it, He refused to drink it.

35 D espués de que lo crucificaron, echaron suertes para repartirse sus vestidos, con lo que se cumplió lo dicho por el profeta: «Se repartieron mis vestidos, y sobre mi ropa echaron suertes.»

And when they had crucified Him, they divided and distributed His garments by casting lots so that the prophet’s saying was fulfilled, They parted My garments among them and over My apparel they cast lots.

36 L uego se sentaron a custodiarlo.

Then they sat down there and kept watch over Him.

37 S obre su cabeza pusieron su causa escrita: «ÉSTE ES JESÚS, EL REY DE LOS JUDÍOS».

And over His head they put the accusation against Him ( the cause of His death), which read, This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.

38 J unto a él crucificaron también a dos ladrones, uno a la derecha y otro a la izquierda.

At the same time two robbers were crucified with Him, one on the right hand and one on the left.

39 L os que pasaban lo insultaban, y mientras meneaban la cabeza

And those who passed by spoke reproachfully and abusively and jeered at Him, wagging their heads,

40 d ecían: «Tú, que derribas el templo y en tres días lo reedificas, sálvate a ti mismo. Si eres Hijo de Dios, desciende de la cruz.»

And they said, You Who would tear down the sanctuary of the temple and rebuild it in three days, rescue Yourself from death. If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.

41 D el mismo modo, también se burlaban de él los principales sacerdotes, los escribas, los fariseos y los ancianos. Decían:

In the same way the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, made sport of Him, saying,

42 « Salvó a otros, pero a sí mismo no puede salvarse. Si es el Rey de Israel, que baje ahora de la cruz, y creeremos en él.

He rescued others from death; Himself He cannot rescue from death. He is the King of Israel? Let Him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in and acknowledge and cleave to Him.

43 Y a que él confió en Dios, pues que Dios lo libre ahora, si lo quiere. Porque él ha dicho: “Soy Hijo de Dios.”»

He trusts in God; let God deliver Him now if He cares for Him and will have Him, for He said, I am the Son of God.

44 Y también lo insultaban los ladrones que estaban crucificados con él.

And the robbers who were crucified with Him also abused and reproached and made sport of Him in the same way.

45 D esde el mediodía y hasta las tres de la tarde hubo tinieblas sobre toda la tierra.

Now from the sixth hour (noon) there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour (three o’clock).

46 C erca de las tres de la tarde, Jesús clamó a gran voz. Decía: «Elí, Elí, ¿lema sabactani?», es decir, «Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has desamparado?»

And about the ninth hour (three o’clock) Jesus cried with a loud voice, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?—that is, My God, My God, why have You abandoned Me '> helpless, forsaking and failing Me in My need]?

47 A lgunos de los que estaban allí, decían al oírlo: «Está llamando a Elías.»

And some of the bystanders, when they heard it, said, This Man is calling for Elijah!

48 A l instante, uno de ellos corrió y tomó una esponja, la empapó en vinagre y, poniéndola en una caña, le dio a beber.

And one of them immediately ran and took a sponge, soaked it with vinegar (a sour wine), and put it on a reed (staff), and was about to give it to Him to drink.

49 L os otros decían: «Deja, veamos si Elías viene a librarlo.»

But the others said, Wait! Let us see whether Elijah will come to save Him from death.

50 P ero Jesús, después de clamar nuevamente a gran voz, entregó el espíritu.

And Jesus cried again with a loud voice and gave up His spirit.

51 E n ese momento el velo del templo se rasgó en dos, de arriba hacia abajo; la tierra tembló, las rocas se partieron,

And at once the curtain of the sanctuary of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; the earth shook and the rocks were split.

52 l os sepulcros se abrieron, y muchos cuerpos de santos, que ya habían muerto, volvieron a vivir.

The tombs were opened and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep in death were raised;

53 D espués de la resurrección de Jesús, éstos salieron de sus sepulcros y fueron a la santa ciudad, donde se aparecieron a muchos.

And coming out of the tombs after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many people.

54 A l ver el terremoto y las cosas que habían sucedido, el centurión y los que estaban con él custodiando a Jesús se llenaron de miedo, y dijeron: «¡En verdad, éste era Hijo de Dios!»

When the centurion and those who were with him keeping watch over Jesus observed the earthquake and all that was happening, they were terribly frightened and filled with awe, and said, Truly this was God’s Son!

55 M uchas mujeres, que desde Galilea habían seguido a Jesús para servirlo, estaban allí mirando de lejos.

There were also numerous women there, looking on from a distance, who were of those who had accompanied Jesus from Galilee, ministering to Him.

56 E ntre ellas estaban María Magdalena, María la madre de Jacobo y de José, y la madre de los hijos de Zebedeo. Jesús es sepultado

Among them were Mary of Magdala, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.

57 C uando llegó la noche, un hombre rico de Arimatea que se llamaba José, y que también había sido discípulo de Jesús,

When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus.

58 f ue a hablar con Pilato para pedirle el cuerpo de Jesús. Y Pilato ordenó que se lo entregaran.

He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him.

59 J osé tomó el cuerpo, lo envolvió en una sábana limpia,

And Joseph took the body and rolled it up in a clean linen cloth used for swathing dead bodies

60 y lo puso en su sepulcro nuevo, que había sido cavado en una peña. Después de hacer rodar una gran piedra a la entrada del sepulcro, se fue.

And laid it in his own fresh ( undefiled) tomb, which he had hewn in the rock; and he rolled a big boulder over the door of the tomb and went away.

61 M aría Magdalena y la otra María se quedaron sentadas delante del sepulcro. La guardia ante la tumba

And Mary of Magdala and the other Mary kept sitting there opposite the tomb.

62 A l día siguiente, que es el día después de la preparación, los principales sacerdotes y los fariseos se reunieron ante Pilato

The next day, that is, the day after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees assembled before Pilate

63 y le dijeron: «Señor, nos acordamos que, cuando aún vivía, aquel engañador dijo: “Después de tres días resucitaré.”

And said, Sir, we have just remembered how that vagabond Imposter said while He was still alive, After three days I will rise again.

64 P or lo tanto, manda asegurar el sepulcro hasta el tercer día; no sea que sus discípulos vayan de noche y se lleven el cuerpo, y luego digan al pueblo: “¡Resucitó de entre los muertos!” Porque entonces el último engaño sería peor que el primero.»

Therefore give an order to have the tomb made secure and safeguarded until the third day, for fear that His disciples will come and steal Him away and tell the people that He has risen from the dead, and the last deception and fraud will be worse than the first.

65 Y Pilato les dijo: «Ahí tienen una guardia. Vayan y aseguren el sepulcro como sepan hacerlo.»

Pilate said to them, You have a guard go, make it as secure as you can.

66 E ntonces ellos fueron y aseguraron el sepulcro, sellando la piedra y poniendo la guardia.

So they went off and made the tomb secure by sealing the boulder, a guard of soldiers being with them and remaining to watch.
