1 L legaron al otro lado del lago, a la región de los gerasenos,

They came to the other side of the sea to the region of the Gerasenes.

2 y en cuanto Jesús salió de la barca, se le acercó un hombre que tenía un espíritu impuro.

And as soon as He got out of the boat, there met Him out of the tombs a man of an unclean spirit.

3 E ste hombre vivía entre los sepulcros, y nadie lo podía sujetar, ni siquiera con cadenas.

This man continually lived among the tombs, and no one could subdue him any more, even with a chain;

4 M uchas veces había sido sujetado con grilletes y cadenas, pero él rompía las cadenas y despedazaba los grilletes, de manera que nadie podía dominarlo.

For he had been bound often with shackles for the feet and handcuffs, but the handcuffs of chains he wrenched apart, and the shackles he rubbed and ground together and broke in pieces; and no one had strength enough to restrain or tame him.

5 E ste hombre andaba de día y de noche por los montes y los sepulcros, gritando y lastimándose con las piedras,

Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always shrieking and screaming and beating and bruising and cutting himself with stones.

6 p ero al ver a Jesús de lejos, corrió para arrodillarse delante de él,

And when from a distance he saw Jesus, he ran and fell on his knees before Him in homage,

7 y a voz en cuello le dijo: «Jesús, Hijo del Dios Altísimo, ¿qué tienes que ver conmigo? ¡Yo te ruego por Dios que no me atormentes!»

And crying out with a loud voice, he said, What have You to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I solemnly implore you by God, do not begin to torment me!

8 Y es que Jesús le había dicho: «Espíritu impuro, ¡deja a este hombre!»

For Jesus was commanding, Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!

9 J esús le preguntó: «¿Cómo te llamas?», y él respondió: «Me llamo Legión, porque somos muchos.»

And He asked him, What is your name? He replied, My name is Legion, for we are many.

10 Y el hombre le rogaba e insistía que no los mandara lejos de aquella región.

And he kept begging Him urgently not to send them away out of that region.

11 C erca del monte pacía un gran hato de cerdos,

Now a great herd of hogs was grazing there on the hillside.

12 y todos los demonios le rogaron: «¡Envíanos a los cerdos! ¡Déjanos entrar en ellos!»

And the demons begged Him, saying, Send us to the hogs, that we may go into them!

13 J esús se lo permitió. Y en cuanto los espíritus impuros salieron del hombre, entraron en los cerdos, que eran como dos mil, y el hato se lanzó al lago por un despeñadero, y allí se ahogaron.

So He gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered into the hogs; and the herd, numbering about 2, 000, rushed headlong down the steep slope into the sea and were drowned in the sea.

14 L os que cuidaban de los cerdos huyeron, y fueron a contar todo esto a la ciudad y por los campos. La gente salió a ver qué era lo que había sucedido,

The hog feeders ran away, and told in the town and in the country. And came to see what it was that had taken place.

15 y cuando llegaron a donde estaba Jesús, y vieron que el que había estado atormentado por la legión de demonios estaba sentado, vestido y en su sano juicio, tuvieron miedo.

And they came to Jesus and looked intently and searchingly at the man who had been a demoniac, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, who had had the legion; and they were seized with alarm and struck with fear.

16 L uego, los que habían visto lo sucedido con el endemoniado y con los cerdos, se lo contaron a los demás,

And those who had seen it related in full what had happened to the man possessed by demons and to the hogs.

17 y comenzaron a rogarle a Jesús que se fuera de sus contornos.

And they began to beg to leave their neighborhood.

18 C uando Jesús abordó la barca, el que había estado endemoniado le rogó que lo dejara estar con él;

And when He had stepped into the boat, the man who had been controlled by the unclean spirits kept begging Him that he might be with Him.

19 p ero Jesús, en vez de permitírselo, le dijo: «Vete a tu casa, con tu familia, y cuéntales las grandes cosas que el Señor ha hecho contigo. Cuéntales cómo ha tenido misericordia de ti.»

But Jesus refused to permit him, but said to him, Go home to your own and bring back word to them of how much the Lord has done for you, and had sympathy for you and mercy on you.

20 E l hombre se fue, y en Decápolis comenzó a contar las grandes cosas que Jesús había hecho con él. Y todos se quedaban asombrados. La hija de Jairo, y la mujer que tocó el manto de Jesús

And he departed and began to publicly proclaim in Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and all the people were astonished and marveled.

21 J esús regresó en una barca a la otra orilla, y como una gran multitud se reunió alrededor de él, decidió quedarse en la orilla del lago.

And when Jesus had recrossed in the boat to the other side, a great throng gathered about Him, and He was at the lakeshore.

22 E ntonces vino Jairo, que era uno de los jefes de la sinagoga, y cuando lo vio, se arrojó a sus pies

Then one of the rulers of the synagogue came up, Jairus by name; and seeing Him, he prostrated himself at His feet

23 y le rogó con mucha insistencia: «¡Ven que mi hija está agonizando! Pon tus manos sobre ella, para que sane y siga con vida.»

And begged Him earnestly, saying, My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay Your hands on her, so that she may be healed and live.

24 J esús se fue con él, y una gran multitud lo seguía y lo apretujaba.

And Jesus went with him; and a great crowd kept following Him and pressed Him from all sides.

25 A llí estaba una mujer que desde hacía doce años padecía de hemorragias

And there was a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years,

26 y había sufrido mucho a manos de muchos médicos, pero que lejos de mejorar había gastado todo lo que tenía, sin ningún resultado.

And who had endured much suffering under many physicians and had spent all that she had, and was no better but instead grew worse.

27 C uando oyó hablar de Jesús, se le acercó por detrás, entre la gente, y le tocó el manto.

She had heard the reports concerning Jesus, and she came up behind Him in the throng and touched His garment,

28 Y es que decía: «Si alcanzo a tocar aunque sea su manto, me sanaré.»

For she kept saying, If I only touch His garments, I shall be restored to health.

29 Y tan pronto como tocó el manto de Jesús, su hemorragia se detuvo, por lo que sintió en su cuerpo que había quedado sana de esa enfermedad.

And immediately her flow of blood was dried up at the source, and '> suddenly] she felt in her body that she was healed of her '> distressing] ailment.

30 J esús se dio cuenta enseguida de que de él había salido poder. Pero se volvió a la multitud y preguntó: «¿Quién ha tocado mis vestidos?»

And Jesus, recognizing in Himself that the power proceeding from Him had gone forth, turned around immediately in the crowd and said, Who touched My clothes?

31 S us discípulos le dijeron: «Estás viendo que la multitud te apretuja, y preguntas: “¿Quién me ha tocado?”»

And the disciples kept saying to Him, You see the crowd pressing hard around You from all sides, and You ask, Who touched Me?

32 P ero Jesús seguía mirando a su alrededor, para ver quién había hecho eso.

Still He kept looking around to see her who had done it.

33 E ntonces la mujer, que sabía lo que en ella había ocurrido, con temor y temblor se acercó y, arrodillándose delante de él, le dijo toda la verdad.

But the woman, knowing what had been done for her, though alarmed and frightened and trembling, fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth.

34 J esús le dijo: «Hija, por tu fe has sido sanada. Ve en paz, y queda sana de tu enfermedad.»

And He said to her, Daughter, your faith (your trust and confidence in Me, springing from faith in God) has restored you to health. Go in (into) peace and be continually healed and freed from your '> distressing bodily] disease.

35 T odavía estaba él hablando cuando de la casa del jefe de la sinagoga vinieron a decirle: «Ya no molestes al Maestro. Tu hija ha muerto.»

While He was still speaking, there came some from the ruler’s house, who said, Your daughter has died. Why bother and distress the Teacher any further?

36 P ero Jesús, que oyó lo que decían, le dijo al jefe de la sinagoga: «No temas. Sólo debes creer.»

Overhearing but ignoring what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, Do not be seized with alarm and struck with fear; only keep on believing.

37 Y con la excepción de Pedro, Jacobo y Juan, el hermano de Jacobo, no permitió que nadie más lo acompañara.

And He permitted no one to accompany Him except Peter and James and John the brother of James.

38 C uando llegó a la casa del jefe de la sinagoga, vio mucho alboroto, y gente que lloraba y lamentaba.

When they arrived at the house of the ruler of the synagogue, He looked at tumult and the people weeping and wailing loudly.

39 A l entrar, les dijo: «¿A qué viene tanto llanto y alboroto? La niña no está muerta, sino dormida.»

And when He had gone in, He said to them, Why do you make an uproar and weep? The little girl is not dead but is sleeping.

40 L a gente se burlaba de él, pero él ordenó que todos salieran. Tomó luego al padre y a la madre de la niña, y a los que estaban con él, y entró adonde estaba la niña.

And they laughed and jeered at Him. But He put them all out, and, taking the child’s father and mother and those who were with Him, He went in where the little girl was lying.

41 J esús la tomó de la mano, y le dijo: «¡Talita cumi!», es decir, «A ti, niña, te digo: ¡levántate!»

Gripping her by the hand, He said to her, Talitha cumi—which translated is, Little girl, I say to you, arise '> from the sleep of death]!

42 E nseguida la niña, que tenía doce años, se levantó y comenzó a caminar. Y la gente se quedó llena de asombro.

And instantly the girl got up and started walking around—for she was twelve years old. And they were utterly astonished and overcome with amazement.

43 P ero Jesús les insistió mucho que no dijeran a nadie lo que había ocurrido, y les mandó que dieran de comer a la niña.

And He strictly commanded and warned them that no one should know this, and He '> expressly] told them to give her to eat.
