1 D urante el reinado de Josías hijo de Amón, rey de Judá, la palabra del Señor vino a Sofonías hijo de Cusi, hijo de Gedalías, hijo de Amarías, hijo de Ezequías.

The word of the Lord which came to Zephaniah son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah, in the days of Josiah king of Judah and son of Amon.

2 « Voy a destruir por completo todo lo que hay sobre la faz de la tierra. —Palabra del Señor.

By taking away I will make an end and I will utterly consume and sweep away all things from the face of the earth, says the Lord.

3 » Voy a destruir a los seres humanos y a las bestias. Voy a destruir a las aves del cielo y a los peces del mar. Eliminaré a los impíos, y borraré de la faz de la tierra a la humanidad entera. —Palabra del Señor.

I will consume and sweep away man and beast; I will consume and sweep away the birds of the air and the fish of the sea. I will overthrow the stumbling blocks (the idols) with the wicked, and I will cut off mankind from the face of the earth, says the Lord.

4 » Voy a extender mi mano contra Judá, y contra todos los habitantes de Jerusalén. Voy a borrar de este lugar los restos de Baal, lo mismo que el recuerdo de sus ministros idólatras y de sus sacerdotes,

I will also stretch out My hand over Judah and over all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place and the name of the idol priests with the priests,

5 e sos que en las azoteas rinden culto al ejército del cielo, y que de rodillas juran en el nombre del Señor y también en el nombre de Milcón.

And those who worship the starry host of the heavens upon their housetops and those who worship the Lord and swear by and to Him and yet swear by and to Malcam,

6 V oy a acabar con los que se apartan de mis caminos, y no me buscan ni me consultan.»

And those who have drawn back from following the Lord and those who have not sought the Lord nor inquired for, inquired of, and required the Lord.

7 G uardemos silencio en presencia de nuestro Señor y Dios. Ya está cerca el día del Señor. Ya el Señor ha preparado el sacrificio, y ha purificado a sus convidados.

Be silent before the Lord God, for the day of the Lord is near; for the Lord has prepared a sacrifice, and He has set apart those who have accepted His invitation.

8 « En el día del sacrificio, yo, el Señor, castigaré a los magnates y a los hijos del rey, y a todos los que visten como extranjeros.

And on the day of the Lord’s sacrifice, I will punish the officials and the king’s sons and all who are clothed in foreign apparel.

9 E se día castigaré también a todos los que dan un salto al cruzar la puerta, y a los que llenan de robo y de engaño las casas de sus amos.

In the same day also will I punish all those who leap swiftly on or over the threshold, who fill their master’s house with violence and deceit and fraud.

10 » Cuando llegue ese día, se escuchará un gran clamor desde la puerta del Pescado, graves gemidos desde la segunda puerta, y dolientes quejas desde las colinas.» —Palabra del Señor.

And in that day, says the Lord, there shall be heard the voice of crying from the Fish Gate and a wailing from the Second Quarter or Lower City and a great crashing and sound of destruction from the hills.

11 L loren, habitantes de Mactes, porque todo el pueblo de mercaderes ha sido destruido. ¡Han sido destruidos todos los que traían dinero!

Wail, you inhabitants of the Mortar! For all the merchant people, like the people of Canaan, will be silent; all those who weighed out silver and were loaded with it will be cut off.

12 « Cuando llegue el momento, yo examinaré con linterna a Jerusalén, y castigaré a los que se hallan en tranquilo reposo y asentados como el vino. Castigaré a esos que dentro de sí piensan: “El Señor no hace bien ni hace mal.”

And at that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps and punish the men who are thickening and settling on their lees, who say in their hearts, The Lord will not do good, nor will He do evil.

13 P or pensar así, sus bienes serán saqueados y sus casas serán derribadas. Construirán casas, pero no llegarán a habitarlas; plantarán viñas, pero no llegarán a beber su vino.»

And their wealth shall become plunder and their houses a desolation. Though they build houses, they shall not inhabit them; though they plant vineyards, they shall not drink the wine from them.

14 Y a está cerca el gran día del Señor. Ya está cerca, muy cerca. Será un día de amargura y de gran estrépito, en el que hasta los valientes pedirán ayuda.

The great day of the Lord is near—near and hastening fast. Hark! the voice of the day of the Lord! The mighty man will cry then bitterly.

15 S erá un día de ira, de angustia y de estrechez; día de alboroto y destrucción, día de oscuridad y tinieblas, día nublado y sombrío,

That day is a day of wrath, a day of distress and anguish, a day of ruin and devastation, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness,

16 d ía de sonido de trompetas, de gritos de guerra contra las ciudades fortificadas y contra las desafiantes torres.

A day of the blast of trumpet and battle cry against the fortified cities and against the high towers and battlements.

17 » Yo afligiré a los mortales. Por haber pecado contra mí andarán como ciegos; su sangre será esparcida como el polvo, y su carne será como estiércol.»

And I will bring distress upon men, so that they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the Lord; their blood shall be poured out like dust and their flesh like dung.

18 E n el día de la ira del Señor, nada podrá librarlos. Ni su plata ni su oro, porque toda la tierra será consumida por el fuego de su enojo. En un abrir y cerrar de ojos, el Señor destruirá a todos los habitantes de la tierra.

Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the Lord’s indignation and wrath. But the whole earth shall be consumed in the fire of His jealous wrath, for a full, yes, a sudden, end will He make of all the inhabitants of the earth.
