1 P or esos días Judá se apartó de sus hermanos y se fue a vivir con un adulamita llamado Jirá.

At that time Judah withdrew from his brothers and went to a certain Adullamite named Hirah.

2 A llí Judá vio a la hija de un cananeo llamado Súa; y la tomó por mujer y se unió a ella.

There Judah saw and met a daughter of Shuah, a Canaanite; he took her as wife and lived with her.

3 Y ella concibió y dio a luz un hijo, al que puso por nombre Er.

And she became pregnant and bore a son, and he called him Er.

4 C oncibió otra vez, y dio a luz un hijo, al que puso por nombre Onán.

And she conceived again and bore a son and named him Onan.

5 Y volvió a concebir, y dio a luz un hijo, al que puso por nombre Sela. Judá estaba en Quezib cuando ella dio a luz.

Again she conceived and bore a son and named him Shelah. at Chezib when she bore him.

6 D espués Judá tomó una mujer para Er, su primogénito. Esa mujer se llamaba Tamar.

Now Judah took a wife for Er, his firstborn; her name was Tamar.

7 P ero Er, el primogénito de Judá, era malo a los ojos del Señor, así que el Señor le quitó la vida.

And Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord slew him.

8 E ntonces Judá le dijo a Onán: «Únete a la mujer de tu hermano, y cumple con tu deber de cuñado. Levanta descendencia para tu hermano.»

Then Judah told Onan, Marry your brother’s widow; live with her and raise offspring for your brother.

9 C omo Onán sabía que la descendencia no sería considerada suya, para no darle descendencia a su hermano, cada vez que se allegaba a la mujer de su hermano derramaba el semen en el suelo.

But Onan knew that the family would not be his, so when he cohabited with his brother’s widow, he prevented conception, lest he should raise up a child for his brother.

10 E ste hecho le desagradó al Señor, y también a él le quitó la vida.

And the thing which he did displeased the Lord; therefore He slew him also.

11 E ntonces Judá le dijo a Tamar, su nuera: «Quédate viuda en casa de tu padre, hasta que crezca mi hijo Sela.» Y es que pensó: «No vaya a ser que también él muera, como sus hermanos.» Y Tamar se fue, y se quedó a vivir en casa de su padre.

Then Judah said to Tamar, his daughter-in-law, Remain a widow at your father’s house till Shelah my son is grown; for he thought, Lest perhaps he would die also, as his brothers did. So Tamar went and lived in her father’s house.

12 D espués de mucho tiempo murió la hija de Súa, mujer de Judá. Después de consolarse, Judá fue con su amigo Jirá, el adulamita, a Timnat, donde estaban los trasquiladores de sus ovejas.

But later Judah’s wife, the daughter of Shuah, died; and when Judah was comforted, he went up to his sheepshearers at Timnath with his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

13 Y Tamar lo supo. Le dijeron: «Tu suegro está yendo a Timnat, a trasquilar sus ovejas.»

Then it was told Tamar, Listen, your father-in-law is going up to Timnath to shear his sheep.

14 E ntonces ella, al ver que Sela ya había crecido y que ella no era entregada a él por mujer, se quitó sus vestidos de viuda, se cubrió el rostro con un velo, y se sentó a la entrada de Enayin, junto al camino de Timnat.

So she put off her widow’s garments and covered herself with a veil, wrapped herself up, and sat in the entrance of Enaim, which is by the road to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown and she was not given to him as his wife.

15 C uando Judá la vio, pensó que era una ramera, pues ella tenía cubierto el rostro.

When Judah saw her, he thought she was a harlot or devoted prostitute, for she had covered her face.

16 E ntonces se apartó del camino y fue hacia ella, y le dijo: «Déjame allegarme a ti.» Y es que no sabía que era su nuera. Y ella le dijo: «¿Y qué me darás por allegarte a mí?»

He turned to her by the road and said, Come, let me have intercourse with you; for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. And she said, What will you give me that you may have intercourse with me?

17 É l respondió: «Te enviaré un cabrito de mi ganado.» Pero ella le dijo: «Déjame una prenda, hasta que lo envíes.»

He answered, I will send you a kid from the flock. And she said, Will you give me a pledge (deposit) until you send it?

18 J udá le dijo: «¿Y qué prenda quieres que te dé?» Y ella respondió: «Tu sello, tu cordón, y el báculo que tienes en la mano.» Judá se los dio, y se allegó a ella, y ella concibió de él.

And he said, What pledge shall I give you? She said, Your signet, your cord, and your staff that is in your hand. And he gave them to her and came in to her, and she became pregnant by him.

19 L uego se levantó y se fue; se quitó el velo con que se cubría, y volvió a vestir sus ropas de viuda.

And she arose and went away and laid aside her veil and put on the garments of her widowhood.

20 C uando por medio de su amigo el adulamita Judá envió el cabrito, para recobrar la prenda, éste ya no encontró a la mujer.

And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman’s hand; but he was unable to find her.

21 L es preguntó entonces a los hombres de aquel lugar: «¿Dónde está la ramera de Enayin, la que estaba junto al camino?» Y ellos le dijeron: «Aquí no ha estado ninguna ramera.»

He asked the men of that place, Where is the harlot or cult prostitute who was openly by the roadside? They said, There was no harlot or temple prostitute here.

22 E l adulamita volvió entonces a Judá, y le dijo: «Ya no la encontré. Además, los hombres del lugar me dijeron: “Aquí no ha estado ninguna ramera.”»

So he returned to Judah and said, I cannot find her; and also the local men said, There was no harlot or temple prostitute around here.

23 J udá dijo: «Pues que se quede con las prendas, para que nadie se burle de nosotros. Que conste que yo envié este cabrito, y que tú no la hallaste.»

And Judah said, Let her keep for herself, lest we be made ashamed. I sent this kid, but you have not found her.

24 C omo tres meses después, le llegó esta noticia a Judá: «Tamar, tu nuera, se ha prostituido. Y el resultado es que ha quedado embarazada.» Entonces Judá dijo: «¡Sáquenla y quémenla!»

But about three months later Judah was told, Tamar your daughter-in-law has played the harlot, and also she is with child by her lewdness. And Judah said, Bring her forth and let her be burned!

25 P ero cuando la estaban sacando, ella envió a decir a su suegro: «Fíjate, por favor, de quién son este sello, este cordón y este báculo. Por causa del dueño de estas cosas estoy embarazada.»

When she was brought forth, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, I am with child by the man to whom these articles belong. Then she added, Make out clearly, I pray you, to whom these belong, the signet, cord, and staff.

26 C uando Judá reconoció todo esto, dijo: «Ella es más justa que yo, pues no le di a mi hijo Sela.» Y nunca más tuvo relaciones con ella.

And Judah acknowledged them and said, She has been more righteous and just than I, because I did not give her to Shelah my son. And he did not cohabit with her again.

27 Y cuando llegó el momento de que diera a luz, resultó que en su vientre había gemelos;

Now when the time came for her to be delivered, behold, there were twins in her womb.

28 y al momento de nacer, uno de ellos sacó la mano. Entonces la partera le tomó la mano, le ató un hilo escarlata, y dijo: «Éste nació primero.»

And when she was in labor, one baby put out his hand; and the midwife took his hand and bound upon it a scarlet thread, saying, This baby was born first.

29 P ero el niño volvió a meter la mano, y entonces salió su hermano. Y la partera dijo: «¡Cómo te abriste paso!» Y le puso por nombre Fares.

But he drew back his hand, and behold, his brother was born first. And she said, What a breaking forth you have made for yourself! Therefore his name was called Perez.

30 D espués salió su hermano, el que tenía el hilo escarlata en la mano, y le puso por nombre Zeraj.

And afterward his brother who had the scarlet thread on his hand was born and was named Zerah.
