1 A nd immediately in the morning the chief priests, having taken counsel with the elders and scribes and the whole sanhedrim, bound Jesus and carried away, and delivered up to Pilate.

And immediately when it was morning, the chief priests, with the elders and scribes and the whole council, held a consultation; and when they had bound Jesus, they took Him away '> violently] and handed Him over to Pilate.

2 A nd Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered and said to him, Thou sayest.

And Pilate inquired of Him, Are You the King of the Jews? And He replied, It is as you say.

3 A nd the chief priests accused him urgently.

And the chief priests kept accusing Him of many things.

4 A nd Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? See of how many things they bear witness against thee.

And Pilate again asked Him, Have You no answer to make? See how many charges they are bringing against You!

5 B ut Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate marvelled.

But Jesus made no further answer at all, so that Pilate wondered and marveled.

6 B ut at feast he released to them one prisoner, whomsoever they begged.

Now at the Feast he set free for them any one prisoner whom they requested.

7 N ow there was the named Barabbas bound with those who had made insurrection with, that had committed murder in the insurrection.

And among the rioters in the prison who had committed murder in the insurrection there was a man named Barabbas.

8 A nd the crowd crying out began to beg to them as he had always done.

And the throng came up and began asking Pilate to do as he usually did for them.

9 B ut Pilate answered them saying, Will ye that I release to you the King of the Jews?

And he replied to them, Do you wish me to set free for you the King of the Jews?

10 f or he knew that the chief priests had delivered him up through envy.

For he was aware that it was '> because they were prompted] by envy that the chief priests had delivered Him up.

11 B ut the chief priests stirred up the crowd that he might rather release Barabbas to them.

But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to get him to release for them Barabbas instead.

12 A nd Pilate answering said to them again, What will ye then that I do whom ye call King of the Jews?

And again Pilate said to them, Then what shall I do with the Man Whom you call the King of the Jews?

13 A nd they cried out again, Crucify him.

And they shouted back again, Crucify Him!

14 A nd Pilate said to them, What evil then has he done? But they cried out the more urgently, Crucify him.

But Pilate said to them, Why? What has He done that is evil? But they shouted with all their might all the more, Crucify Him '> at once]!

15 A nd Pilate, desirous of contenting the crowd, released to them Barabbas, and delivered up Jesus, when he had scourged him, that he might be crucified.

So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, set Barabbas free for them; and after having Jesus whipped, he handed over to be crucified.

16 A nd the soldiers led him away into the court which is praetorium, and they call together the whole band.

Then the soldiers led Him away to the courtyard inside the palace, that is, the Praetorium, and they called the entire detachment of soldiers together.

17 A nd they clothe him with purple, and bind round on him a crown of thorns which they had plaited.

And they dressed Him in purple, and, weaving together a crown of thorns, they placed it on Him.

18 A nd they began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!

And they began to salute Him, Hail (greetings, good health to You, long life to You), King of the Jews!

19 A nd they struck his head with a reed, and spat on him, and, bending the knee, did him homage.

And they struck His head with a staff made of a reed and spat on Him and kept bowing their knees in homage to Him.

20 A nd when they had mocked him, they took the purple off him, and put his own clothes on him; and they lead him out that they may crucify him.

And when they had making sport of Him, they took the purple off of Him and put His own clothes on Him. And they led Him out to crucify Him.

21 A nd they compel to go a certain passer-by, Simon, a Cyrenian, coming from the field, the father of Alexander and Rufus, that he might carry his cross.

And they forced a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, who was coming in from the field (country), to carry His cross.

22 A nd they bring him to the place Golgotha, which, being interpreted, is Place of a skull.

And they led Him to Golgotha, meaning The Place of a Skull.

23 A nd they offered him wine medicated with myrrh; but he did not take.

And they give Him wine mingled with myrrh, but He would not take it.

24 A nd having crucified him, they part his clothes amongst, casting lots on them, what each one should take.

And they crucified Him; and they divided His garments and distributed them among themselves, throwing lots for them to decide who should take what.

25 A nd it was the third hour, and they crucified him.

And it was the third hour (about nine o’clock in the morning) when they crucified Him.

26 A nd the superscription of what he was accused of was written up: The King of the Jews.

And the inscription of the accusation against Him was written above, The King of the Jews.

27 A nd with him they crucify two robbers, one on his right hand, and one on his left.

And with Him they crucified two robbers, one on right hand and one on His left.

28

And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, He was counted among the transgressors.

29 A nd they that passed by reviled him, shaking their heads, and saying, Aha, thou that destroyest the temple and buildest it in three days,

And those who passed by kept reviling Him and reproaching Him abusively in harsh and insolent language, wagging their heads and saying, Aha! You Who would destroy the temple and build it in three days,

30 s ave thyself, and descend from the cross.

Now rescue Yourself '> from death], coming down from the cross!

31 I n like manner the chief priests also, with the scribes, mocking with one another, said, He saved others; himself he cannot save.

So also the chief priests, with the scribes, made sport of Him to one another, saying, He rescued others '> from death]; Himself He is unable to rescue.

32 L et the Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and may believe. And they that were crucified with him reproached him.

Let the Christ (the Messiah), the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and trust in and rely on Him and adhere to Him! Those who were crucified with Him also reviled and reproached Him.

33 A nd when sixth hour was come, there came darkness over the whole land until ninth hour;

And when the sixth hour (about midday) had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour (about three o’clock).

34 a nd at the ninth hour, Jesus cried with a loud voice,, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?—which means, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me '> deserting Me and leaving Me helpless and abandoned]?

35 A nd some of those who stood by, when they heard, said, Behold, he calls for Elias.

And some of those standing by, hearing it, said, See! He is calling Elijah!

36 A nd one, running and filling a sponge with vinegar, fixed it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone, let us see if Elias comes to take him down.

And one man ran, and, filling a sponge with vinegar (a mixture of sour wine and water), put it on a staff made of a reed and gave it to Him to drink, saying, Hold off! Let us see whether Elijah come to take Him down.

37 A nd Jesus, having uttered a loud cry, expired.

And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed out His life.

38 A nd the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom.

And the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

39 A nd the centurion who stood by over against him, when he saw that he had expired having thus cried out, said, Truly this man was Son of God.

And when the centurion who stood facing Him saw Him expire this way, he said, Really, this Man was God’s Son!

40 A nd there were women also looking on from afar off, among whom were both Mary of Magdala, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome;

Now some women were there also, looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome,

41 w ho also, when he was in Galilee, followed him and ministered to him; and many others who came up with him to Jerusalem.

Who, when was in Galilee, were in the habit of accompanying and ministering to Him; and also many other who had come up with Him to Jerusalem.

42 A nd when it was already evening, since it was preparation, that is, before a sabbath,

As evening had already come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, before the Sabbath,

43 J oseph of Arimathaea, an honourable councillor, who also himself was awaiting the kingdom of God, coming, emboldened himself and went in to Pilate and begged the body of Jesus.

Joseph, he of Arimathea, noble and honorable in rank and a respected member of the council (Sanhedrin), who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, daring the consequences, took courage and ventured to go to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

44 A nd Pilate wondered if he were already dead; and having called to the centurion, he inquired of him if he had long died.

But Pilate wondered whether He was dead so soon, and, having called the centurion, he asked him whether was already dead.

45 A nd when he knew from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.

And when he learned from the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.

46 A nd having bought fine linen, having taken him down, he swathed him in the fine linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was cut out of rock, and rolled a stone to the door of the sepulchre.

And Joseph bought a linen cloth '> for swathing dead bodies], and, taking Him down from the cross, he rolled Him up in the linen cloth and placed Him in a tomb which had been hewn out of a rock. Then he rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.

47 A nd Mary of Magdala and Mary the of Joses saw where he was put.
