1 A nd it came to pass when Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had taken Ai and had utterly destroyed it, that he had done to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them,
When Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had taken Ai and had utterly destroyed it, doing to Jericho and its king as he had done to Ai and its king, and how the residents of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them,
2 t hat they feared greatly; for Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and it was greater than Ai, and all its men were mighty.
He feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were mighty.
3 A nd Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, and to Piream king of Jarmuth, and to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying,
So Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, to Piram king of Jarmuth, to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying,
4 C ome up to me, and help me, that we may smite Gibeon; for it has made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.
Come up to me and help me, and let us smite Gibeon, for it has made peace with Joshua and with the Israelites.
5 A nd the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their armies, and they encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it.
Then the five kings of the Amorites—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon—gathered their forces and went up with all their armies and encamped before Gibeon to fight against it.
6 A nd the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua, to the camp at Gilgal, saying, Withdraw not thy hand from thy servants: come up to us quickly, and save us and help us; for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the hill-country are gathered against us.
And the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua at the camp in Gilgal, saying, Do not relax your hand from your servants; come up to us quickly and save us and help us, for all the kings of the Amorites who dwell in the hill country are gathered against us.
7 S o Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him, even all the valiant men.
So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the warriors with him and all the mighty men of valor.
8 A nd Jehovah said to Joshua, Fear them not; for into thy hand have I given them: not a man of them shall stand before thee.
And the Lord said to Joshua, Do not fear them, for I have given them into your hand; there shall not a man of them stand before you.
9 A nd Joshua came upon them suddenly; he went up from Gilgal all night.
So Joshua came upon them suddenly, having gone up from Gilgal all night.
10 A nd Jehovah discomfited them before Israel, and smote them a great slaughter at Gibeon; and he chased them on the way of the ascent of Beth-horon, and smote them up to Azekah and Makkedah.
And the Lord caused to panic before Israel, who slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon and chased them along the way that goes up to Beth-horon and smote them as far as Azekah and Makkedah.
11 A nd it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel,—they were at the descent of Beth-horon,—that Jehovah cast down great stones from heaven upon them up to Azekah, and they died. They were more who died with the hailstones than they whom the children of Israel had slain with the sword.
As they fled before Israel, while they were descending to Beth-horon, the Lord cast great stones from the heavens on them as far as Azekah, killing them. More died because of the hailstones than the Israelites slew with the sword.
12 T hen spoke Joshua to Jehovah in the day when Jehovah gave up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand still upon Gibeon; And thou, moon, in the valley of Ajalon!
Then Joshua spoke to the Lord on the day when the Lord gave the Amorites over to the Israelites, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, be silent and stand still at Gibeon, and you, moon, in the Valley of Ajalon!
13 A nd the sun stood still, and the moon remained where it was, until the nation had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? And the sun remained standing in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a full day.
And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the nation took vengeance upon their enemies. Is not this written in the Book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of the heavens and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day.
14 A nd there was no day like that before it or after it, that Jehovah hearkened to the voice of a man; for Jehovah fought for Israel.
There was no day like it before or since, when the Lord heeded the voice of a man. For the Lord fought for Israel.
15 A nd Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp, to Gilgal.
Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.
16 A nd these five kings fled, and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah.
Those five kings fled and hid themselves in the cave of Makkedah.
17 A nd it was told Joshua, saying, The five kings have been found, hid in the cave at Makkedah.
And it was told Joshua, The five kings are hidden in the cave at Makkedah.
18 A nd Joshua said, Roll great stones before the mouth of the cave, and set men before it to keep them.
Joshua said, Roll great stones to the cave’s mouth, and set men to guard them.
19 A nd ye, stay not, pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities; for Jehovah your God has given them into your hand.
But do not stay. Pursue your enemies and fall upon their rear; do not allow them to enter their cities, for the Lord your God has given them into your hand.
20 A nd it came to pass when Joshua and the children of Israel had ended smiting them with a very great slaughter, until they were consumed, that the remnant which remained of them entered into fortified cities;
When Joshua and the Israelites had ended slaying them until they were wiped out and the remnant remaining of them had entered into fortified cities,
21 a nd all the people returned to the camp to Joshua, at Makkedah, in peace; none moved his tongue against the children of Israel.
All the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace; none moved his tongue against any of the Israelites.
22 A nd Joshua said, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring forth to me those five kings out of the cave.
Then said Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave and bring out those five kings to me from the cave.
23 A nd they did so, and brought forth to him those five kings out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon.
They brought the five kings out of the cave to him—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon.
24 A nd it came to pass when they had brought forth those kings to Joshua, that Joshua called to all the men of Israel, and said to the captains of the men of war who went with him, Come forward, put your feet on the necks of these kings. And they came forward and put their feet on their necks.
When they brought out those kings to Joshua, called for all the Israelites and told the commanders of the men of war who went with him, Come, put your feet on the necks of these kings. And they came and put their feet on the necks.
25 A nd Joshua said to them, Fear not, neither be dismayed; be strong and courageous, for thus will Jehovah do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.
Joshua said to them, Fear not nor be dismayed; be strong and of good courage. For thus shall the Lord do to all your enemies against whom you fight.
26 A nd afterwards Joshua smote them, and put them to death, and hanged them on five trees; and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.
Afterward Joshua smote and slew them and hanged their bodies on five trees, and they hung on the trees until evening.
27 A nd it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave where they had been hid, and laid great stones before the cave's mouth, to this very day.
At sunset Joshua ordered and they took the bodies down from the trees and cast them into the cave where the kings had hidden and laid great stones on the cave’s mouth, which remain to this very day.
28 A nd Joshua took Makkedah on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, him and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed; he let none remain; and he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.
Joshua took Makkedah that day and smote it and its king with the sword and utterly destroyed everyone in it. He left none remaining. And he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.
29 A nd Joshua passed, and all Israel with him, from Makkedah to Libnah, and fought against Libnah.
Then Joshua and all Israel went from Makkedah to Libnah and attacked Libnah.
30 A nd Jehovah gave it also and the king thereof into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain in it: and he did to the king thereof as he had done to the king of Jericho.
And the Lord gave it also and its king into Israel’s hands, and Joshua smote it with the sword, and all the people in it. He left none remaining in it. And he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.
31 A nd Joshua passed, and all Israel with him, from Libnah to Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it.
And Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, to Lachish and encamped against it and attacked it.
32 A nd Jehovah gave Lachish into the hand of Israel; and they took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah.
And the Lord delivered Lachish into the hands of Israel, and Joshua took it on the second day and smote it with the sword, and all the people in it, as he had done to Libnah.
33 T hen Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.
Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish, and Joshua smote him and his people—until he had left none remaining.
34 A nd Joshua, and all Israel with him, passed from Lachish to Eglon; and they encamped against it, and fought against it.
From Lachish Joshua and all Israel went on to Eglon, laid siege to it, and attacked it.
35 A nd they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword; and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed on that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.
And they took it that day and smote it with the sword and utterly destroyed all who were in it that day, as he had done to Lachish.
36 A nd Joshua went up, and all Israel with him, from Eglon to Hebron; and they fought against it.
Then Joshua with all Israel went up from Eglon to Hebron, and they attacked it
37 A nd they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein: he let none remain, according to all that he had done to Eglon; and he utterly destroyed it, and all the souls that were therein.
And took it and smote it with the sword, and its king and all its towns and everyone in it. He left none remaining, as he had done to Eglon, and utterly destroyed it and all its people.
38 A nd Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir; and fought against it.
And Joshua and all Israel with him returned to Debir and attacked it.
39 A nd he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he let none remain: as he had done to Hebron, and as he had done to Libnah, and to the king thereof, so he did to Debir and to the king thereof.
And he took it, with its king and all its towns, and they smote them with the sword and utterly destroyed everyone in it. He left none remaining. As he had done to Hebron and to Libnah and its king, so he did to Debir and its king.
40 A nd Joshua smote the whole country, the mountain, and the south, and the lowland, and the hill-slopes, and all their kings: he let none remain, but he utterly destroyed all that breathed, as Jehovah the God of Israel had commanded.
So Joshua smote all the land, the hill country, the South, the lowland, and the slopes, and all their kings. He left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the Lord, the God of Israel, commanded.
41 A nd Joshua smote them from Kadesh-barnea even to Gazah, and all the country of Goshen, even to Gibeon;
And Joshua smote them from Kadesh-barnea even to Gaza, and all the country of Goshen even to Gibeon.
42 a nd all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time; for Jehovah the God of Israel fought for Israel.
Joshua took all these kings and their land at one time, because the Lord, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.
43 A nd Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp, to Gilgal.
And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.
