1 P alabras del Predicador, hijo de David, rey en Jerusalén.

The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

2 ¡ Vanidad de vanidades! ¡Vanidad de vanidades! ¡Todo es vanidad! —Palabras del Predicador.

Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher; vanity of vanities, all is vanity.

3 ¿ Qué provecho saca el hombre de todos sus trabajos y de todos sus afanes bajo el sol?

What profit hath man of all his labor wherein he laboreth under the sun?

4 U na generación se va, y otra generación viene, pero la tierra permanece para siempre.

One generation goeth, and another generation cometh; but the earth abideth for ever.

5 E l sol sale, el sol se pone, y vuelve presuroso al lugar de donde se levanta.

The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to its place where it ariseth.

6 E l viento gira hacia el sur, y da vueltas por el norte; va girando sin cesar, y vuelve a girar el viento.

The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it turneth about continually in its course, and the wind returneth again to its circuits.

7 T odos los ríos van al mar, y el mar jamás se llena. Y los ríos vuelven al lugar de donde salieron, para volver a recorrer su camino.

All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full; unto the place whither the rivers go, thither they go again.

8 T odas las cosas fatigan más de lo que es posible expresar. ¡Los ojos nunca se cansan de ver, ni se fatigan los oídos de oír!

All things are full of weariness; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

9 ¿ Qué es lo que antes fue? ¡Lo mismo que habrá de ser! ¿Qué es lo que ha sido hecho? ¡Lo mismo que habrá de hacerse! ¡Y no hay nada nuevo bajo el sol!

That which hath been is that which shall be; and that which hath been done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

10 N o hay nada de lo que pueda decirse: «¡Miren, aquí hay algo nuevo!», porque eso ya existía mucho antes que nosotros.

Is there a thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been long ago, in the ages which were before us.

11 N adie recuerda lo que antes fue, ni nadie que nazca después recordará lo que está por suceder. La experiencia del Predicador

There is no remembrance of the former generations; neither shall there be any remembrance of the latter generations that are to come, among those that shall come after.

12 Y o soy el Predicador, y reiné sobre Israel en Jerusalén.

I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

13 M e entregué de corazón a investigar y a estudiar minuciosamente todo lo que se hace bajo el cielo. Este penoso trabajo nos lo ha dado Dios, para que nos ocupemos de él.

And I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under heaven: it is a sore travail that God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised therewith.

14 P or lo tanto, escudriñé todo lo que se hace bajo el sol, y pude darme cuenta de que todo es vanidad y aflicción de espíritu;

I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind.

15 ¡ lo que está torcido no se puede enderezar, y lo que está incompleto no se puede contar!

That which is crooked cannot be made straight; and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.

16 P ensé entonces en lo íntimo de mi ser: «Miren cuánto me he engrandecido! ¡He llegado a ser más sabio que todos los que me antecedieron en Jerusalén! ¡Mi corazón ha percibido mucha sabiduría y mucha ciencia!»

I communed with mine own hear, saying, Lo, I have gotten me great wisdom above all that were before me in Jerusalem; yea, my heart hath had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.

17 E ntonces me entregué de corazón a adquirir más sabiduría, y a entender también las locuras y los desvaríos, pero me di cuenta de que también esto es aflicción de espíritu.

And I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also was a striving after wind.

18 P orque «abundar en sabiduría es abundar en molestias», y también «quien aumenta sus conocimientos, aumenta sus sufrimientos».

For in much wisdom is much grief; and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
