1 P alabras del Predicador, hijo de David, rey en Jerusalén.

The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

2 “ Vanidad de vanidades,” dice el Predicador, “Vanidad de vanidades, todo es vanidad.”

Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher; vanity of vanities, all is vanity.

3 ¿ Qué provecho recibe el hombre de todo el trabajo Con que se afana bajo el sol ?

What profit hath man of all his labor wherein he laboreth under the sun?

4 U na generación va y otra generación viene, Pero la tierra permanece para siempre.

One generation goeth, and another generation cometh; but the earth abideth for ever.

5 E l sol sale y el sol se pone, A su lugar se apresura. De allí vuelve a salir.

The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to its place where it ariseth.

6 S oplando hacia el sur, Y girando hacia el norte, Girando y girando va el viento; Y sobre sus giros el viento regresa.

The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it turneth about continually in its course, and the wind returneth again to its circuits.

7 T odos los ríos van hacia el mar, Pero el mar no se llena. Al lugar donde los ríos fluyen, Allí vuelven a fluir.

All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full; unto the place whither the rivers go, thither they go again.

8 T odas las cosas son fatigosas, El hombre no puede expresar las. No se sacia el ojo de ver, Ni se cansa el oído de oír.

All things are full of weariness; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

9 L o que fue, eso será, Y lo que se hizo, eso se hará; No hay nada nuevo bajo el sol.

That which hath been is that which shall be; and that which hath been done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

10 ¿ Hay algo de que se pueda decir: “Mira, esto es nuevo?” Ya existía en los siglos Que nos precedieron.

Is there a thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been long ago, in the ages which were before us.

11 N o hay memoria de las cosas primeras Ni tampoco de las postreras que sucederán; No habrá memoria de ellas Entre los que vendrán después. Vanidad del Saber

There is no remembrance of the former generations; neither shall there be any remembrance of the latter generations that are to come, among those that shall come after.

12 Y o, el Predicador, he sido rey sobre Israel en Jerusalén.

I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

13 Y apliqué mi corazón a buscar e investigar con sabiduría todo lo que se ha hecho bajo el cielo. Tarea dolorosa dada por Dios a los hijos de los hombres para ser afligidos con ella.

And I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under heaven: it is a sore travail that God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised therewith.

14 H e visto todas las obras que se han hecho bajo el sol, y he observado que todo es vanidad y correr tras el viento.

I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind.

15 L o torcido no puede enderezarse, Y lo que falta no se puede contar.

That which is crooked cannot be made straight; and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.

16 Y o me dije: “Yo he engrandecido y aumentado en sabiduría más que todos los que estuvieron antes de mí sobre Jerusalén; mi corazón ha contemplado mucha sabiduría y conocimiento.”

I communed with mine own hear, saying, Lo, I have gotten me great wisdom above all that were before me in Jerusalem; yea, my heart hath had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.

17 Y apliqué mi corazón a conocer la sabiduría y a conocer la locura y la insensatez. Me di cuenta de que esto también es correr tras el viento.

And I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also was a striving after wind.

18 P orque en la mucha sabiduría hay mucha angustia, Y quien aumenta el conocimiento, aumenta el dolor.

For in much wisdom is much grief; and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
