1 A conteció que en la primavera, en el tiempo cuando los reyes salen a la batalla, David envió a Joab y con él a sus siervos y a todo Israel, y destruyeron a los Amonitas y sitiaron a Rabá. Pero David permaneció en Jerusalén.

And it came to pass, at the return of the year, at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried at Jerusalem.

2 A l atardecer David se levantó de su lecho y se paseaba por el terrado de la casa del rey, y desde el terrado vio a una mujer que se estaba bañando; y la mujer era de aspecto muy hermoso.

And it came to pass at eventide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.

3 D avid mandó a preguntar acerca de aquella mujer. Y alguien dijo: “¿No es ésta Betsabé, hija de Eliam, mujer de Urías el Hitita ?”

And David send and inquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bath-sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?

4 D avid envió mensajeros y la tomaron; y cuando ella vino a él, él durmió con ella. Después que ella se purificó de su inmundicia, regresó a su casa.

And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her (for she was purified from her uncleanness); and she returned unto her house.

5 Y Betsabé concibió; y envió aviso a David diciéndole: “Estoy encinta.”

And the woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said, I am with child.

6 E ntonces David envió a decir a Joab: “Envíame a Urías el Hitita.” Y Joab envió a Urías a David.

And David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David.

7 C uando Urías vino a él, David le preguntó por Joab, por el pueblo y por el estado de la guerra.

And when Uriah was come unto him, David asked of him how Joab did, and how the people fared, and how the war prospered.

8 D espués dijo David a Urías: “Desciende a tu casa, y lava tus pies.” Salió Urías de la casa del rey, y tras él fue enviado un obsequio del rey.

And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king's house, and there followed him a mess of food from the king.

9 P ero Urías durmió a la entrada de la casa del rey con todos los siervos de su señor, y no bajó a su casa.

But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house.

10 C uando se lo contaron a David, le dijeron: “Urías no bajó a su casa,” David dijo a Urías: “¿No has venido de hacer un viaje? ¿Por qué no bajaste a tu casa?”

And when they had told David, saying, Uriah went not down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Art thou not come from a journey? wherefore didst thou not go down unto thy house?

11 U rías respondió a David: “El arca, Israel y Judá están bajo tiendas, y mi señor Joab y los siervos de mi señor acampan a campo abierto. ¿He de ir yo a mi casa para comer, beber y acostarme con mi mujer? Por su vida y la vida de su alma, que no haré tal cosa.”

And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in booths; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open field; shall I then go into my house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.

12 E ntonces David dijo a Urías: “Quédate aquí hoy también, y mañana te dejaré ir.” Y se quedó Urías en Jerusalén aquel día y el siguiente.

And David said to Uriah, Tarry here to-day also, and to-morrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow.

13 Y David lo convidó a comer y a beber con él, y lo embriagó. Al anochecer Urías salió a acostarse en su cama con los siervos de su señor, pero no descendió a su casa.

And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.

14 A la mañana siguiente David escribió una carta a Joab, y la envió por mano de Urías.

And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.

15 E n la carta había escrito: “Pongan a Urías al frente de la batalla más reñida y retírense de él, para que sea herido y muera.”

And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die.

16 A sí que cuando Joab asediaba la ciudad, puso a Urías en el lugar donde sabía que había hombres valientes.

And it came to pass, when Joab kept watch upon the city, that he assigned Uriah unto the place where he knew that valiant men were.

17 Y los hombres de la ciudad salieron y pelearon contra Joab, y algunos de los siervos de David cayeron, y murió también Urías el Hitita.

And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell some of the people, even of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.

18 J oab envió a informar a David de todos los sucesos de la guerra,

Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war;

19 y dio orden al mensajero: “Cuando hayas acabado de contar al rey todos los sucesos de la guerra,

and he charged the messenger, saying, When thou hast made an end of telling all the things concerning the war unto the king,

20 s i sucede que el furor del rey se enciende y te dice: ‘¿Por qué se acercaron tanto a la ciudad para pelear? ¿No sabían que dispararían desde el muro?

it shall be that, if the king's wrath arise, and he say unto thee, Wherefore went ye so nigh unto the city to fight? knew ye not that they would shoot from the wall?

21 ¿ Quién mató a Abimelec, hijo de Jerobaal? ¿No arrojó una mujer sobre él una muela de molino (piedra de moler) desde lo alto del muro de manera que murió en Tebes ? ¿Por qué se acercaron tanto al muro?’ Entonces le dirás: ‘También su siervo Urías el Hitita ha muerto.’”

who smote Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast an upper millstone upon him from the wall, so that he died at Thebez? why went ye so nigh the wall? then shalt thou say, Thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.

22 P artió, pues, el mensajero, y llegó e informó a David todo lo que Joab le había enviado a decir.

So the messenger went, and came and showed David all that Joab had sent him for.

23 Y el mensajero dijo a David: “Los hombres prevalecieron contra nosotros y salieron al campo contra nosotros, pero los rechazamos hasta la entrada de la puerta.

And the messenger said unto David, The men prevailed against us, and came out unto us into the field, and we were upon them even unto the entrance of the gate.

24 P ero los arqueros tiraron contra sus siervos desde la muralla; y algunos de los siervos del rey han muerto, y también su siervo Urías el Hitita ha muerto.”

And the shooters shot at thy servants from off the wall; and some of the king's servants are dead, and thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.

25 E ntonces David dijo al mensajero: “Así dirás a Joab: ‘No tengas pesar por esto, porque la espada devora tanto a uno como al otro. Haz más fuerte tu combate contra la ciudad y destrúyela’; y tú aliéntalo.”

Then David said unto the messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another; make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and encourage thou him.

26 A l oír la mujer de Urías que su marido Urías había muerto, hizo duelo por su marido.

And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she made lamentation for her husband.

27 C uando pasó el luto, David mandó traerla a su casa, y ella fue su mujer; y dio a luz un hijo. Pero lo que David había hecho fue malo a los ojos del Señor.

And when the mourning was past, David sent and took her home to his house, and she became his wife, and bare him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased Jehovah.
