1 J etro, sacerdote de Madián, suegro de Moisés, oyó de todo lo que Dios había hecho por Moisés y por Su pueblo Israel, cómo el Señor había sacado a Israel de Egipto.

Now Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, how that Jehovah had brought Israel out of Egypt.

2 E ntonces Jetro, suegro de Moisés, tomó a Séfora, mujer de Moisés, después que éste la había enviado a su casa,

And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took Zipporah, Moses' wife, after he had sent her away,

3 y a sus dos hijos, uno de los cuales se llamaba Gersón (Soy peregrino allí), pues Moisés había dicho: “He sido peregrino en tierra extranjera.”

and her two sons; of whom the name of the one was Gershom; for he said, I have been a sojourner in a foreign land:

4 E l nombre del otro era Eliezer (Mi Dios es ayuda), pues había dicho: “El Dios de mi padre fue mi ayuda y me libró de la espada de Faraón.”

and the name of the other was Eliezer; for he said, The God of my father was my help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh.

5 Y vino Jetro, suegro de Moisés, con los hijos y la mujer de Moisés al desierto, donde éste estaba acampado junto al monte de Dios.

And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife unto Moses into the wilderness where he was encamped, at the mount of God:

6 Y mandó decir a Moisés: “Yo, tu suegro Jetro, vengo a ti con tu mujer y sus dos hijos con ella.”

and he said unto Moses, I, thy father-in-law Jethro, am come unto thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.

7 S alió Moisés a recibir a su suegro, se inclinó y lo besó. Se preguntaron uno a otro cómo estaban, y entraron en la tienda.

And Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and did obeisance, and kissed him: and they asked each other of their welfare; and they came into the tent.

8 M oisés contó a su suegro todo lo que el Señor había hecho a Faraón y a los Egipcios por amor a Israel, todas las dificultades que les habían sobrevenido en el camino y cómo los había librado el Señor.

And Moses told his father-in-law all that Jehovah had done unto Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake, all the travail that had come upon them by the way, and how Jehovah delivered them.

9 Y Jetro se alegró de todo el bien que el Señor había hecho a Israel, al librarlo de la mano de los Egipcios.

And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which Jehovah had done to Israel, in that he had delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians.

10 E ntonces Jetro dijo: “Bendito sea el Señor que los libró de la mano de los Egipcios y de la mano de Faraón, y que libró al pueblo del poder de los Egipcios.

And Jethro said, Blessed be Jehovah, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh; who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.

11 A hora sé que el Señor es más grande que todos los dioses. Ciertamente, esto se probó cuando ellos trataron al pueblo con arrogancia.”

Now I know that Jehovah is greater than all gods; yea, in the thing wherein they dealt proudly against them.

12 Y Jetro, suegro de Moisés, tomó un holocausto y sacrificios para Dios, y Aarón vino con todos los ancianos de Israel a comer con el suegro de Moisés delante de Dios. Nombramiento de Jueces

And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took a burnt-offering and sacrifices for God: and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses' father-in-law before God.

13 A l día siguiente Moisés se sentó a juzgar al pueblo. El pueblo estuvo delante de Moisés desde la mañana hasta el atardecer.

And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood about Moses from the morning unto the evening.

14 C uando el suegro de Moisés vio todo lo que él hacía por el pueblo, dijo: “¿Qué es esto que haces por el pueblo? ¿Por qué juzgas tú solo, y todo el pueblo está delante de ti desde la mañana hasta el atardecer?”

And when Moses' father-in-law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand about thee from morning unto even?

15 Y Moisés respondió a su suegro: “Porque el pueblo viene a mí para consultar a Dios.

And Moses said unto his father-in-law, Because the people come unto me to inquire of God:

16 C uando tienen un pleito, vienen a mí, y yo juzgo entre uno y otro, dándo les a conocer los estatutos de Dios y Sus leyes.”

when they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between a man and his neighbor, and I make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.

17 E l suegro de Moisés le dijo: “No está bien lo que haces.

And Moses' father-in-law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.

18 C on seguridad desfallecerás tú, y también este pueblo que está contigo, porque el trabajo es demasiado pesado para ti. No puedes hacerlo tú solo.

Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for the thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.

19 A hora, escúchame. Yo te aconsejaré, y Dios estará contigo. Sé tú el representante del pueblo delante de Dios, y somete los asuntos a Dios.

Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God be with thee: be thou for the people to God-ward, and bring thou the causes unto God:

20 E ntonces enséñales los estatutos y las leyes, y hazles saber el camino en que deben andar y la obra que han de realizar.

and thou shalt teach them the statutes and the laws, and shalt show them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.

21 A demás, escogerás de entre todo el pueblo hombres capaces, temerosos de Dios, hombres veraces que aborrezcan las ganancias deshonestas, y los pondrás sobre el pueblo como jefes de mil, de cien, de cincuenta y de diez.

Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating unjust gain; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:

22 Q ue sean ellos los que juzguen al pueblo en todo tiempo. Que traigan a ti todo pleito grave, pero que ellos juzguen todo pleito sencillo. Así será más fácil para ti, y ellos llevarán la carga contigo.

and let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge themselves: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.

23 S i haces esto y Dios te lo manda, tú podrás resistir y todo este pueblo por su parte irá en paz a su lugar.”

If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people also shall go to their place in peace.

24 M oisés escuchó a su suegro, e hizo todo lo que él había dicho.

So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said.

25 Y escogió Moisés hombres capaces de entre todo Israel, y los puso por cabezas del pueblo, como jefes de mil, de cien, de cincuenta y de diez.

And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

26 E llos juzgaban al pueblo en todo tiempo. El pleito difícil lo traían a Moisés, pero todo pleito sencillo lo juzgaban ellos.

And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

27 M oisés despidió a su suegro, y éste se fue a su tierra.

And Moses let his father-in-law depart; and he went his way into his own land.
