1 E ntonces respondió Elifaz, el Temanita:

Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,

2 “ Si alguien tratara de hablarte, ¿te pondrías impaciente? Pero ¿quién puede abstenerse de hablar ?

If one assay to commune with thee, wilt thou be grieved? But who can withhold himself from speaking?

3 T ú has exhortado a muchos, Y las manos débiles has fortalecido.

Behold, thou hast instructed many, And thou hast strengthened the weak hands.

4 A l que tropezaba, tus palabras lo levantaban, Y las rodillas débiles fortalecías.

Thy words have upholden him that was falling, And thou hast made firm the feeble knees.

5 P ero ahora que te ha llegado a ti, te impacientas; Te toca a ti, y te desalientas.

But now it is come unto thee, and thou faintest; It toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.

6 ¿ No es tu temor (reverencia) a Dios tu confianza, Y la integridad de tus caminos tu esperanza?

Is not thy fear of God thy confidence, And the integrity of thy ways thy hope?

7 R ecuerda ahora, ¿quién siendo inocente ha perecido jamás ? ¿O dónde han sido destruidos los rectos ?

Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? Or where were the upright cut off?

8 P or lo que yo he visto, los que aran iniquidad Y los que siembran aflicción, eso siegan.

According as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, And sow trouble, reap the same.

9 P or el aliento de Dios perecen, Y por la explosión (el soplo) de Su ira son consumidos.

By the breath of God they perish, And by the blast of his anger are they consumed.

10 E l rugido del león, el bramido de la fiera Y los dientes de los leoncillos son quebrantados.

The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, And the teeth of the young lions, are broken.

11 E l león perece por falta de presa, Y los cachorros de la leona se dispersan.

The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, And the whelps of the lioness are scattered abroad.

12 U na palabra me fue traída secretamente, Y mi oído percibió un susurro de ella.

Now a thing was secretly brought to me, And mine ear received a whisper thereof.

13 E ntre pensamientos inquietantes de visiones nocturnas, Cuando el sueño profundo cae sobre los hombres,

In thoughts from the visions of the night, When deep sleep falleth on men,

14 M e sobrevino un espanto, un temblor Que hizo estremecer todos mis huesos.

Fear came upon me, and trembling, Which made all my bones to shake.

15 E ntonces un espíritu pasó cerca de mi rostro, Y el pelo de mi piel se erizó.

Then a spirit passed before my face; The hair of my flesh stood up.

16 A lgo se detuvo, pero no pude reconocer su aspecto; Una figura estaba delante de mis ojos, Hubo silencio, después oí una voz:

It stood still, but I could not discern the appearance thereof; A form was before mine eyes: There was silence, and I heard a voice, saying,

17 ‘ ¿Es el mortal justo delante de Dios ? ¿Es el hombre puro delante de su Hacedor ?

Shall mortal man be more just than God? Shall a man be more pure than his Maker?

18 D ios no confía ni aún en Sus mismos siervos; Y a Sus ángeles atribuye errores.

Behold, he putteth no trust in his servants; And his angels he chargeth with folly:

19 ¡ Cuánto más a los que habitan en casas de barro, Cuyos cimientos están en el polvo, Que son aplastados como la polilla!

How much more them that dwell in houses of clay, Whose foundation is in the dust, Who are crushed before the moth!

20 E ntre la mañana y la tarde son hechos pedazos; Sin que nadie se dé cuenta, perecen para siempre.

Betwixt morning and evening they are destroyed: They perish for ever without any regarding it.

21 ¿ No les es arrancada la cuerda de su tienda ? Mueren, pero sin sabiduría.’”

Is not their tent-cord plucked up within them? They die, and that without wisdom.
