1 P alabras del Predicador, hijo de David, rey en Jerusalén.

The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

2 « Vanidad de vanidades —dijo el Predicador—; vanidad de vanidades, todo es vanidad.»

Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher; vanity of vanities, all is vanity.

3 ¿ Qué provecho obtiene el hombre de todo el trabajo con que se afana debajo del sol?

What profit hath man of all his labor wherein he laboreth under the sun?

4 G eneración va y generación viene, pero la tierra siempre permanece.

One generation goeth, and another generation cometh; but the earth abideth for ever.

5 S ale el sol y se pone el sol, y se apresura a volver al lugar de donde se levanta.

The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to its place where it ariseth.

6 E l viento sopla hacia el sur, luego gira hacia el norte; y girando sin cesar, de nuevo vuelve el viento a sus giros.

The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it turneth about continually in its course, and the wind returneth again to its circuits.

7 T odos los ríos van al mar, pero el mar no se llena. Al lugar de donde los ríos vinieron, allí vuelven para correr de nuevo.

All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full; unto the place whither the rivers go, thither they go again.

8 T odas las cosas son fatigosas, más de lo que el hombre puede expresar. Nunca se sacia el ojo de ver ni el oído de oír.

All things are full of weariness; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

9 ¿ Qué es lo que fue? Lo mismo que será. ¿Qué es lo que ha sido hecho? Lo mismo que se hará, pues nada hay nuevo debajo del sol.

That which hath been is that which shall be; and that which hath been done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

10 ¿ Acaso hay algo de que se pueda decir: «He aquí esto es nuevo»? Ya aconteció en los siglos que nos han precedido.

Is there a thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been long ago, in the ages which were before us.

11 N o queda memoria de lo que precedió, ni tampoco de lo que ha de suceder quedará memoria en los que vengan después. La experiencia del Predicador

There is no remembrance of the former generations; neither shall there be any remembrance of the latter generations that are to come, among those that shall come after.

12 Y o, el Predicador, fui rey sobre Israel en Jerusalén.

I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

13 M e entregué de corazón a inquirir y a buscar con sabiduría sobre todo lo que se hace debajo del cielo; este penoso trabajo dio Dios a los hijos de los hombres para que se ocupen en él.

And I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under heaven: it is a sore travail that God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised therewith.

14 M iré todas las obras que se hacen debajo del sol, y vi que todo ello es vanidad y aflicción de espíritu.

I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind.

15 L o torcido no se puede enderezar, y con lo incompleto no puede contarse.

That which is crooked cannot be made straight; and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.

16 H ablé yo en mi corazón, diciendo: «He aquí, yo me he engrandecido, y he crecido en sabiduría más que todos mis predecesores en Jerusalén, y mi corazón ha percibido mucha sabiduría y ciencia.»

I communed with mine own hear, saying, Lo, I have gotten me great wisdom above all that were before me in Jerusalem; yea, my heart hath had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.

17 D e corazón me dediqué a conocer la sabiduría, y también a entender las locuras y los desvaríos. Y supe que aun esto era aflicción de espíritu,

And I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also was a striving after wind.

18 p ues en la mucha sabiduría hay mucho sufrimiento; y quien añade ciencia, añade dolor.

For in much wisdom is much grief; and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
