1 P uesto que ya muchos han tratado de poner en orden la historia de las cosas que entre nosotros han sido ciertísimas,

Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to draw up a narrative concerning those matters which have been fulfilled among us,

2 t al como nos las enseñaron los que desde el principio las vieron con sus ojos y fueron ministros de la palabra,

even as they delivered them unto us, who from the beginning wer eyewitnesses and ministers of the word,

3 m e ha parecido también a mí, después de haber investigado con diligencia todas las cosas desde su origen, escribírtelas por orden, excelentísimo Teófilo,

it seemed good to me also, having traced the course of all things accurately from the first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus;

4 p ara que conozcas bien la verdad de las cosas en las cuales has sido instruido. Anuncio del nacimiento de Juan

that thou mightest know the certainty concerning the things wherein thou wast instructed.

5 H ubo en los días de Herodes, rey de Judea, un sacerdote llamado Zacarías, de la clase de Abías; su mujer era de las hijas de Aarón y se llamaba Elisabet.

There was in the days of Herod, king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abijah: and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

6 A mbos eran justos delante de Dios y andaban irreprensibles en todos los mandamientos y ordenanzas del Señor.

And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

7 P ero no tenían hijos, porque Elisabet era estéril. Ambos eran ya de edad avanzada.

And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.

8 A conteció que ejerciendo Zacarías el sacerdocio delante de Dios, según el orden de su clase,

Now it came to pass, while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,

9 l e tocó en suerte entrar, conforme a la costumbre del sacerdocio, en el santuario del Señor para ofrecer el incienso.

according to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to enter into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.

10 T oda la multitud del pueblo estaba fuera orando a la hora del incienso.

And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the hour of incense.

11 E ntonces se le apareció un ángel del Señor puesto de pie a la derecha del altar del incienso.

And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of altar of incense.

12 A l verlo, Zacarías se turbó y lo sobrecogió temor.

And Zacharias was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him.

13 P ero el ángel le dijo: —Zacarías, no temas, porque tu oración ha sido oída y tu mujer Elisabet dará a luz un hijo, y le pondrás por nombre Juan.

But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: because thy supplication is heard, and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

14 T endrás gozo y alegría, y muchos se regocijarán por su nacimiento,

And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

15 p orque será grande delante de Dios. No beberá vino ni sidra, y será lleno del Espíritu Santo aun desde el vientre de su madre.

For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb.

16 H ará que muchos de los hijos de Israel se conviertan al Señor, su Dios.

And many of the children of Israel shall be turn unto the Lord their God.

17 E irá delante de él con el espíritu y el poder de Elías, para hacer volver los corazones de los padres a los hijos y de los rebeldes a la prudencia de los justos, para preparar al Señor un pueblo bien dispuesto.

And he shall go before his face in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to walk in the wisdom of the just; to make ready for the Lord a people prepared for him.

18 Z acarías preguntó al ángel: —¿En qué conoceré esto?, porque yo soy viejo y mi mujer es de edad avanzada.

And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.

19 R espondiendo el ángel, le dijo: —Yo soy Gabriel, que estoy delante de Dios, y he sido enviado a hablarte y darte estas buenas nuevas.

And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak unto thee, and to bring thee these good tidings.

20 A hora, por cuanto no creíste mis palabras, las cuales se cumplirán a su tiempo, quedarás mudo y no podrás hablar hasta el día en que esto suceda.

And behold, thou shalt be silent and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall come to pass, because thou believedst not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

21 E l pueblo, entretanto, estaba esperando a Zacarías, y se extrañaba de que se demorara en el santuario.

And the people were waiting for Zacharias, and they marvelled while he tarried in the temple.

22 C uando salió, no les podía hablar; entonces comprendieron que había tenido una visión en el santuario. Él les hablaba por señas, y permaneció mudo.

And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: and he continued making signs unto them, and remained dumb.

23 C umplidos los días de su ministerio, se fue a su casa.

And it came to pass, when the days of his ministration were fulfilled, he departed unto his house.

24 D espués de aquellos días concibió su mujer Elisabet, y se recluyó en casa por cinco meses, diciendo:

And after these days Elisabeth his wife conceived; and she hid herself five months, saying,

25 « Así ha hecho conmigo el Señor en los días en que se dignó quitar mi afrenta entre los hombres.» Anuncio del nacimiento de Jesús

Thus hath the Lord done unto me in the days wherein he looked upon me, to take away my reproach among men.

26 A l sexto mes, el ángel Gabriel fue enviado por Dios a una ciudad de Galilea llamada Nazaret,

Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

27 a una virgen desposada con un varón que se llamaba José, de la casa de David; y el nombre de la virgen era María.

to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.

28 E ntrando el ángel a donde ella estaba, dijo: —¡Salve, muy favorecida! El Señor es contigo; bendita tú entre las mujeres.

And he came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee.

29 P ero ella, cuando lo vio, se turbó por sus palabras, y pensaba qué salutación sería ésta.

But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this might be.

30 E ntonces el ángel le dijo: —María, no temas, porque has hallado gracia delante de Dios.

And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God.

31 C oncebirás en tu vientre y darás a luz un hijo, y llamarás su nombre Jesús.

And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

32 É ste será grande, y será llamado Hijo del Altísimo. El Señor Dios le dará el trono de David, su padre;

He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

33 r einará sobre la casa de Jacob para siempre y su Reino no tendrá fin.

and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

34 E ntonces María preguntó al ángel: —¿Cómo será esto?, pues no conozco varón.

And Mary said unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

35 R espondiendo el ángel, le dijo: —El Espíritu Santo vendrá sobre ti y el poder del Altísimo te cubrirá con su sombra; por lo cual también el Santo Ser que va a nacer será llamado Hijo de Dios.

And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee: wherefore also the holy thing which is begotten shall be called the Son of God.

36 Y he aquí también tu parienta Elisabet, la que llamaban estéril, ha concebido hijo en su vejez y éste es el sexto mes para ella,

And behold, Elisabeth thy kinswoman, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her that was called barren.

37 p ues nada hay imposible para Dios.

For no word from God shall be void of power.

38 E ntonces María dijo: —Aquí está la sierva del Señor; hágase conmigo conforme a tu palabra. Y el ángel se fue de su presencia. María visita a Elisabet

And Mary said, Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

39 E n aquellos días, levantándose María, fue de prisa a la montaña, a una ciudad de Judá;

And Mary arose in these days and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Judah;

40 e ntró en casa de Zacarías y saludó a Elisabet.

and entered into the house of Zacharias and saluted Elisabeth.

41 Y aconteció que cuando oyó Elisabet la salutación de María, la criatura saltó en su vientre, y Elisabet, llena del Espíritu Santo,

And it came to pass, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit;

42 e xclamó a gran voz: —Bendita tú entre las mujeres y bendito el fruto de tu vientre.

and she lifted up her voice with a loud cry, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

43 ¿ Por qué se me concede esto a mí, que la madre de mi Señor venga a mí?,

And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come unto me?

44 p orque tan pronto como llegó la voz de tu salutación a mis oídos, la criatura saltó de alegría en mi vientre.

For behold, when the voice of thy salutation came into mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

45 B ienaventurada la que creyó, porque se cumplirá lo que le fue dicho de parte del Señor.

And blessed is she that believed; for there shall be a fulfilment of the things which have been spoken to her from the Lord.

46 E ntonces María dijo: «Engrandece mi alma al Señor

And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,

47 y mi espíritu se regocija en Dios mi Salvador,

And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

48 p orque ha mirado la bajeza de su sierva, pues desde ahora me dirán bienaventurada todas las generaciones,

For he hath looked upon the low estate of his handmaid: For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

49 p orque me ha hecho grandes cosas el Poderoso. ¡Santo es su nombre,

For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; And holy is his name.

50 y su misericordia es de generación en generación a los que le temen!

And his mercy is unto generations and generations On them that fear him.

51 H izo proezas con su brazo; esparció a los soberbios en el pensamiento de sus corazones.

He hath showed strength with his arm; He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their heart.

52 Q uitó de los tronos a los poderosos y exaltó a los humildes.

He hath put down princes from their thrones, And hath exalted them of low degree.

53 A los hambrientos colmó de bienes y a los ricos envió vacíos.

The hungry he hath filled with good things; And the rich he hath sent empty away.

54 S ocorrió a Israel, su siervo, acordándose de su misericordia

He hath given help to Israel his servant, That he might remember mercy

55 — de la cual habló a nuestros padres— para con Abraham y su descendencia para siempre.»

(As he spake unto our fathers) Toward Abraham and his seed for ever.

56 S e quedó María con ella como tres meses; después se volvió a su casa. Nacimiento de Juan el Bautista

And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned unto her house.

57 C uando a Elisabet se le cumplió el tiempo de su alumbramiento, dio a luz un hijo.

Now Elisabeth's time was fulfilled that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.

58 A l oír los vecinos y los parientes que Dios había engrandecido para con ella su misericordia, se regocijaron con ella.

And her neighbors and her kinsfolk heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy towards her; and they rejoiced with her.

59 A conteció que al octavo día vinieron para circuncidar al niño, y lo llamaban con el nombre de su padre, Zacarías;

And it came to pass on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him Zacharias, after the name of the father.

60 p ero su madre dijo: —¡No! Se llamará Juan.

And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.

61 L e dijeron: —¿Por qué? No hay nadie en tu parentela que se llame con ese nombre.

And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.

62 E ntonces preguntaron por señas a su padre cómo lo quería llamar.

And they made signs to his father, what he would have him called.

63 É l, pidiendo una tablilla, escribió: «Juan es su nombre.» Y todos se maravillaron.

And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.

64 E n ese momento fue abierta su boca y suelta su lengua, y comenzó a bendecir a Dios.

And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, blessing God.

65 S e llenaron de temor todos sus vecinos, y en todas las montañas de Judea se divulgaron todas estas cosas.

And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.

66 L os que las oían las guardaban en su corazón, diciendo: «¿Quién, pues, será este niño?» Y la mano del Señor estaba con él. Profecía de Zacarías

And all that heard them laid them up in their heart, saying, What then shall this child be? For the hand of the Lord was with him.

67 Z acarías, su padre, fue lleno del Espíritu Santo y profetizó, diciendo:

And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,

68 « Bendito el Señor Dios de Israel, que ha visitado y redimido a su pueblo,

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; For he hath visited and wrought redemption for his people,

69 y nos levantó un poderoso Salvador en la casa de David, su siervo

And hath raised up a horn of salvation for us In the house of his servant David

70 — como habló por boca de sus santos profetas que fueron desde el principio—,

(As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets that have been from of old),

71 s alvación de nuestros enemigos y de la mano de todos los que nos odiaron,

Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;

72 p ara hacer misericordia con nuestros padres y acordarse de su santo pacto,

To show mercy towards, our fathers, And to remember his holy covenant;

73 d el juramento que hizo a Abraham, nuestro padre, que nos había de conceder

The oath which he spake unto Abraham our father,

74 q ue, librados de nuestros enemigos, sin temor lo serviríamos

To grant unto us that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies Should serve him without fear,

75 e n santidad y en justicia delante de él todos nuestros días.

In holiness and righteousness before him all our days.

76 Y tú, niño, profeta del Altísimo serás llamado, porque irás delante de la presencia del Señor para preparar sus caminos,

Yea and thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Most High: For thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to make ready his ways;

77 p ara dar conocimiento de salvación a su pueblo, para perdón de sus pecados,

To give knowledge of salvation unto his people In the remission of their sins,

78 p or la entrañable misericordia de nuestro Dios, con que nos visitó desde lo alto la aurora,

Because of the tender mercy of our God, Whereby the dayspring from on high shall visit us,

79 p ara dar luz a los que habitan en tinieblas y en sombra de muerte, para encaminar nuestros pies por camino de paz».

To shine upon them that sit in darkness and the shadow of death; To guide our feet into the way of peace.

80 E l niño crecía y se fortalecía en espíritu, y estuvo en lugares desiertos hasta el día de su manifestación a Israel.

And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his showing unto Israel.
