1 T ambién éstos son proverbios de Salomón, los cuales copiaron los varones de Ezequías, rey de Judá:

These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.

2 G loria de Dios es encubrir un asunto, pero honra del rey es investigarlo.

It is the glory of God to conceal a thing; But the glory of kings is to search out a matter.

3 P ara la altura de los cielos, para la profundidad de la tierra y para el corazón de los reyes, no hay investigación.

As the heavens for height, and the earth for depth, So the heart of kings is unsearchable.

4 Q uita la escoria de la plata y saldrá una alhaja para el fundidor.

Take away the dross from the silver, And there cometh forth a vessel for the refiner:

5 A parta al malvado de la presencia del rey, y su trono se afirmará en justicia.

Take away the wicked from before the king, And his throne shall be established in righteousness.

6 N o te alabes delante del rey ni te pongas en el lugar de los grandes,

Put not thyself forward in the presence of the king, And stand not in the place of great men:

7 p orque mejor es que se te diga: «Sube acá», y no que seas humillado delante del príncipe a quien tus ojos han visto.

For better is it that it be said unto thee, Come up hither, Than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince, Whom thine eyes have seen.

8 N o entres apresuradamente en pleito, no sea que no sepas qué hacer luego, cuando tu prójimo te haya avergonzado.

Go not forth hastily to strive, Lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, When thy neighbor hath put thee to shame.

9 T rata tu causa con tu compañero y no descubras el secreto a otro,

Debate thy cause with thy neighbor himself, And disclose not the secret of another;

10 n o sea que te deshonre el que lo oiga y tu infamia no pueda repararse.

Lest he that heareth it revile thee, And thine infamy turn not away.

11 M anzana de oro con figuras de plata es la palabra dicha como conviene.

A word fitly spoken Is like apples of gold in network of silver.

12 C omo zarcillo de oro y joyel de oro fino es el que reprende al sabio que tiene oído dócil.

As an ear-ring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, So is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.

13 C omo frío de nieve en tiempo de siega, así es el mensajero fiel a quienes lo envían, pues reconforta el alma de su señor.

As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, So is a faithful messenger to them that send him; For he refresheth the soul of his masters.

14 C omo nubes y vientos sin lluvia, así es el tacaño que se jacta de su generosidad.

As clouds and wind without rain, So is he that boasteth himself of his gifts falsely.

15 C on mucha paciencia se aplaca el príncipe, pues la lengua suave hasta los huesos quebranta.

By long forbearing is a ruler persuaded, And a soft tongue breaketh the bone.

16 ¿ Hallaste miel? Come sólo lo necesario, no sea que harto de ella la vomites.

Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, Lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.

17 N o pongas con exceso tu pie en la casa de tu vecino, no sea que, harto de ti, te aborrezca.

Let thy foot be seldom in thy neighbor's house, Lest he be weary of thee, and hate thee.

18 M artillo, cuchillo y saeta aguda es el hombre que dice contra su prójimo falso testimonio.

A man that beareth false witness against his neighbor Is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.

19 C omo diente roto y pie descoyuntado es confiar en un prevaricador en momentos de angustia.

Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble Is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.

20 E l que canta canciones al corazón afligido es como el que se quita la ropa en tiempo de frío, o como el que echa vinagre sobre el jabón.

As one that taketh off a garment in cold weather, and as vinegar upon soda, So is he that singeth songs to a heavy heart.

21 S i el que te aborrece tiene hambre, dale de comer pan, y si tiene sed, dale de beber agua;

If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; And if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:

22 p ues, haciendo esto, harás que le arda la cara de vergüenza, y Jehová te recompensará.

For thou wilt heap coals of fire upon his head, And Jehovah will reward thee.

23 E l viento del norte trae la lluvia, y el rostro airado, la lengua detractora.

The north wind bringeth forth rain: So doth a backbiting tongue an angry countenance.

24 M ejor es estar en un rincón del terrado que en casa espaciosa con mujer pendenciera.

It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, Than with a contentious woman in a wide house.

25 C omo el agua fría para el sediento, así son las buenas noticias de lejanas tierras.

As cold waters to a thirsty soul, So is good news from a far country.

26 C omo fuente turbia y manantial sucio es el justo que vacila ante el malvado.

As a troubled fountain, and a corrupted spring, So is a righteous man that giveth way before the wicked.

27 C omer mucha miel no es bueno, ni el buscar la propia gloria es gloria.

It is not good to eat much honey: So for men to search out their own glory is grievous.

28 C omo ciudad destruida y sin murallas es el hombre que no pone freno a su espíritu.

He whose spirit is without restraint Is like a city that is broken down and without walls.
