1 U rmătoarele sunt tot nişte proverbe ale lui Solomon, copiate de oamenii lui Ezechia, regele lui Iuda.

These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.

2 E ste slava lui Dumnezeu să tăinuiască lucrurile şi este gloria regelui să le cerceteze.

It is the glory of God to conceal a thing; But the glory of kings is to search out a matter.

3 Î nălţimea cerurilor, adâncimea pământului şi gândul regelui sunt de nepătruns.

As the heavens for height, and the earth for depth, So the heart of kings is unsearchable.

4 Î ndepărtează zgura din argint şi va ieşi material pentru argintar!

Take away the dross from the silver, And there cometh forth a vessel for the refiner:

5 Î ndepărtează-l pe cel rău dinaintea regelui şi tronul lui va fi întărit prin dreptate!

Take away the wicked from before the king, And his throne shall be established in righteousness.

6 N u te lăuda înaintea regelui şi nu cere un loc printre oamenii mari,

Put not thyself forward in the presence of the king, And stand not in the place of great men:

7 c ăci este mai bine să ţi se spună: „Urcă aici!“, decât să fii umilit sub privirea unui nobil. Ceea ce ochii tăi au văzut

For better is it that it be said unto thee, Come up hither, Than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince, Whom thine eyes have seen.

8 s ă nu aduci în grabă la judecată! Altfel, ce vei face la urmă, când semenul tău te va face de ruşine?

Go not forth hastily to strive, Lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, When thy neighbor hath put thee to shame.

9 A pără-ţi cauza împotriva semenului tău, dar nu dezvălui secretul altuia,

Debate thy cause with thy neighbor himself, And disclose not the secret of another;

10 c a nu cumva cel ce îl aude să te facă de ruşine şi să ai o reputaţie proastă, care să nu se mai şteargă.

Lest he that heareth it revile thee, And thine infamy turn not away.

11 U n cuvânt spus la timpul potrivit este ca nişte mere de aur într-un coşuleţ de argint.

A word fitly spoken Is like apples of gold in network of silver.

12 C a un cercel de aur şi ca un colier de aur curat este mustrarea înţeleaptă pentru o ureche ascultătoare.

As an ear-ring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, So is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.

13 C a răcoarea zăpezii în timpul secerişului este un mesager credincios pentru cel ce-l trimite; el înviorează sufletul stăpânilor lui.

As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, So is a faithful messenger to them that send him; For he refresheth the soul of his masters.

14 C a norii şi ca vântul fără ploaie este omul care se laudă cu darurile pe care nu le-a dat.

As clouds and wind without rain, So is he that boasteth himself of his gifts falsely.

15 P rin răbdare poate fi convins un conducător, şi o vorbă blândă poate zdrobi oase.

By long forbearing is a ruler persuaded, And a soft tongue breaketh the bone.

16 D acă găseşti miere, mănâncă doar cât îţi trebuie, ca să nu te dezguşti de ea şi să o vomiţi.

Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, Lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.

17 V izitează-l rar pe semenul tău, ca să nu se plictisească de tine şi să te urască.

Let thy foot be seldom in thy neighbor's house, Lest he be weary of thee, and hate thee.

18 C a un ciomag, ca o sabie şi ca o săgeată ascuţită este omul care depune mărturie falsă împotriva semenului său.

A man that beareth false witness against his neighbor Is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.

19 C a un dinte stricat şi ca un picior olog este încrederea într-un om necredincios în ziua necazului.

Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble Is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.

20 C a unul care se dezbracă într-o zi rece şi ca oţetul turnat pe sodă este cel ce cântă cântări unei inimi în nenorocire.

As one that taketh off a garment in cold weather, and as vinegar upon soda, So is he that singeth songs to a heavy heart.

21 D acă duşmanul tău este flămând, dă-i de mâncare, iar dacă-i este sete, dă-i să bea,

If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; And if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:

22 c ăci făcând aşa, vei îngrămădi cărbuni aprinşi pe capul lui, iar Domnul îţi va răsplăti.

For thou wilt heap coals of fire upon his head, And Jehovah will reward thee.

23 D upă cum vântul de la nord aduce ploaie, tot astfel şi limba defăimătoare aduce priviri furioase.

The north wind bringeth forth rain: So doth a backbiting tongue an angry countenance.

24 M ai bine să locuieşti într-un colţ pe acoperiş, decât să împarţi casa cu o soţie cicălitoare!

It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, Than with a contentious woman in a wide house.

25 C a apa rece pentru sufletul obosit este vestea bună venită dintr-o ţară îndepărtată.

As cold waters to a thirsty soul, So is good news from a far country.

26 C a un izvor noroios şi ca o fântână tulbure este omul drept care se pleacă înaintea celui rău.

As a troubled fountain, and a corrupted spring, So is a righteous man that giveth way before the wicked.

27 A şa cum nu este bine să mănânci prea multă miere, tot astfel nu este demn nici să-ţi cauţi propria slavă.

It is not good to eat much honey: So for men to search out their own glory is grievous.

28 C a o cetate ale cărei ziduri sunt dărâmate, aşa este omul lipsit de stăpânire de sine.

He whose spirit is without restraint Is like a city that is broken down and without walls.
