1 D omnul s-a aprins de mânie din nou împotriva lui Israel şi l-a stârnit pe David împotriva lor, spunându-i: „Du-te şi fă numărătoarea lui Israel şi a lui Iuda!“

And again the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them, saying, Go, number Israel and Judah.

2 R egele le-a zis lui Ioab şi conducătorilor oştirii care erau cu el: – Mergeţi prin toate seminţiile lui Israel, de la Dan şi până la Beer-Şeba, şi faceţi numărătoarea poporului ca să ştiu la cât se ridică numărul lui!

And the king said to Joab the captain of the host, who was with him, Go now to and fro through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the sum of the people.

3 D ar Ioab i-a zis regelui: – Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, să înmulţească poporul de o sută de ori mai mult şi fie ca stăpânul meu, regele, să vadă cu ochii săi lucrul acesta! Dar de ce doreşte stăpânul meu, regele, să facă acest lucru?

And Joab said unto the king, Now Jehovah thy God add unto the people, how many soever they may be, a hundredfold; and may the eyes of my lord the king see it: but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing?

4 Î nsă porunca regelui dată lui Ioab şi conducătorilor oştirii a rămas de neclintit. Prin urmare Ioab şi conducătorii oştirii au plecat de la rege ca să facă numărătoarea lui Israel.

Notwithstanding, the king's word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.

5 D upă ce au trecut Iordanul şi-au aşezat tabăra la Aroer, la sud de cetate, în mijlocul unei vâlcele. După aceea, au traversat teritoriul Gad înspre Iazer.

And they passed over the Jordan, and encamped in Aroer, on the right side of the city that is in the middle of the valley of Gad, and unto Jazer:

6 A u ajuns în Ghilad şi în teritoriul lui Tahtim-Hodşi, apoi la Dan-Iaan şi prin împrejurimi până înspre Sidon.

then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtim-hodshi; and they came to Dan-jaan, and round about to Sidon,

7 A u ajuns până la cetatea Tir şi în toate cetăţile hiviţilor şi ale canaaniţilor, apoi s-au îndreptat înspre Beer-Şeba, în partea de sud a lui Iuda.

and came to the stronghold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites; and they went out to the south of Judah, at Beer-sheba.

8 A u străbătut astfel toată ţara şi, după nouă luni şi douăzeci de zile, s-au întors la Ierusalim.

So when they had gone to and from through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.

9 I oab i-a dat regelui numărul bărbaţilor din popor: în Israel erau opt sute de mii de bărbaţi în stare să meargă la război, iar în Iuda – cinci sute de mii. Pedeapsa Domnului

And Joab gave up the sum of the numbering of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

10 D avid s-a simţit mustrat în cugetul lui după ce făcuse numărătoarea poporului. El I-a zis Domnului: „Am săvârşit un mare păcat prin ceea ce am făcut! Însă acum Doamne, iartă, Te rog, nelegiuirea robului Tău, căci am lucrat întru totul ca un nebun!“

And David's heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto Jehovah, I have sinned greatly in that which I have done: but now, O Jehovah, put away, I beseech thee, the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

11 Î n dimineaţa următoare, când David s-a trezit, Cuvântul Domnului a venit la profetul Gad, văzătorul lui David, spunându-i:

And when David rose up in the morning, the word of Jehovah came unto the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying,

12 „ Du-te şi spune-i lui David: «Aşa vorbeşte Domnul: ‘Trei nenorociri îţi pun înainte! Alege una dintre ele şi cu aceea te voi lovi!’»“

Go and speak unto David, Thus saith Jehovah, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.

13 G ad a venit la David şi l-a înştiinţat spunându-i: – Ce alegi? Şapte ani de foamete în ţară, trei luni în timpul cărora să fugi dinaintea duşmanilor tăi, şi ei să te urmărească sau trei zile în timpul cărora molima să fie în ţară? Acum gândeşte-te şi vezi ce trebuie să răspund Celui Ce m-a trimis!

So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thy foes while they pursue thee? or shall there be three days' pestilence in thy land? now advise thee, and consider what answer I shall return to him that sent me.

14 – Sunt într-o mare strâmtorare, i-a răspuns David lui Gad. Mai bine să cădem în mâna Domnului, căci mila Lui este nemărginită, decât să cad în mâinile oamenilor!

And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of Jehovah; for his mercies are great; and let me not fall into the hand of man.

15 D omnul a trimis molima în Israel, începând din acea dimineaţă şi până la încheierea timpului hotărât. De la Dan şi până la Beer-Şeba au murit din popor şaptezeci de mii de oameni.

So Jehovah sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed; and there died of the people from Dan even to Beer-sheba seventy thousand men.

16 Î n timp ce îngerul avea mâna întinsă spre Ierusalim şi-l distrugea, Domnului I-a părut rău pentru acel dezastru şi i-a zis îngerului care distrugea poporul: „Destul! Retrage-ţi mâna!“ Îngerul Domnului era lângă aria iebusitului Aravna.

And when the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, Jehovah repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough; now stay thy hand. And the angel of Jehovah was by the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

17 V ăzându-l pe îngerul care lovea poporul, David I-a zis Domnului: „Iată că eu am păcătuit! Eu am săvârşit nelegiuirea! Dar oile acestea, ce au făcut oare? Te rog, lasă mâna Ta să fie numai împotriva mea şi împotriva familiei mele!“ David zideşte un altar

And David spake unto Jehovah when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done perversely; but these sheep, what have they done? let thy hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father's house.

18 G ad a venit la David în acea zi şi i-a zis: – Du-te şi ridică-I Domnului un altar pe aria iebusitului Aravna!

And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto Jehovah in the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

19 D avid s-a dus şi a făcut după cuvântul pe care Domnul îl poruncise prin Gad.

And David went up according to the saying of Gad, as Jehovah commanded.

20 A ravna s-a uitat şi l-a văzut pe rege şi pe slujitorii săi, venind înspre el. El a ieşit din arie şi s-a plecat cu faţa la pământ înaintea regelui.

And Araunah looked forth, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him: and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.

21 E l l-a întrebat: – De ce a venit stăpânul meu, regele, la slujitorul său? – Doresc să-ţi cumpăr aria, i-a răspuns David, pentru a zidi aici un altar Domnului ca astfel urgia care s-a abătut asupra poporului să înceteze.

And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshing-floor of thee, to build an altar unto Jehovah, that the plague may be stayed from the people.

22 – Stăpânul meu, regele, poate să ia şi să aducă ca jertfă tot ceea ce doreşte, i-a zis Aravna lui David. Aici sunt şi boii pentru arderea de tot, iar uneltele de treierat şi jugul vor ţine loc de lemne.

And Araunah said unto David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him: behold, the oxen for the burnt-offering, and the threshing instruments and the yokes of the oxen for the wood:

23 T oate acestea, o, rege, Aravna i le dă regelui. Apoi a mai zis: Fie ca Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, să te primească!

all this, O king, doth Araunah give unto the king. And Araunah said unto the king, Jehovah thy God accept thee.

24 R egele însă i-a zis lui Aravna: – Nu aşa! Vreau s-o cumpăr de la tine, plătindu-ţi! Nu voi aduce Domnului meu arderi de tot care să nu mă coste nimic! Astfel, David a cumpărat aria şi boii cu cincizeci de şecheli de argint.

And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will verily buy it of thee at a price. Neither will I offer burnt-offerings unto Jehovah my God which cost me nothing. So David bought the threshing-floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

25 A poi David a zidit acolo un altar Domnului şi I-a adus arderi de tot şi jertfe de pace. Domnul a răspuns astfel rugăciunilor făcute pentru ţară, iar urgia care era peste Israel a fost oprită.

And David built there an altar unto Jehovah, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings. So Jehovah was entreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.
