1 „ Mai de preţ este un nume bun decât untdelemnul mirositor şi mai mult preţuieşte ziua morţii decât ziua naşterii.

A good name is better than precious oil; and the day of death, than the day of one's birth.

2 M ai bine să mergi într-o casă de jale decât într-o casă de petrecere, căci acesta este sfârşitul oricărui om, iar cel rămas în viaţă ar trebui să priceapă aceasta.

It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.

3 M ai bună este tristeţea decât râsul, căci prin întristarea feţei inima se face mai bună.

Sorrow is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made glad.

4 I nima înţelepţilor se află în casa de jale, dar inima proştilor se află în casa de petrecere.

The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.

5 M ai bine să asculţi mustrarea înţeleptului, decât să auzi cântecul proştilor.

It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.

6 P recum pârâie spinii sub oală, aşa este şi râsul prostului! Şi aceasta este o deşertăciune!

For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.

7 A suprirea îl transformă pe înţelept într-un prost, iar mita corupe inima.

Surely extortion maketh the wise man foolish; and a bribe destroyeth the understanding.

8 M ai bun este sfârşitul unui lucru decât începutul lui şi mai bună este răbdarea decât mândria.

Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof; and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.

9 N u te grăbi să te mânii în duhul tău, căci mânia locuieşte în sânul nesăbuiţilor!

Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry; for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.

10 S ă nu zici: «De ce au fost zilele dintâi mai bune decât acestea?», căci nu din înţelepciune întrebi aceasta!

Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not inquire wisely concerning this.

11 E ste bună înţelepciunea, aşa cum şi moştenirea este bună şi de folos celor ce văd soarele,

Wisdom is as good as an inheritance; yea, more excellent is it for them that see the sun.

12 c ăci înţelepciunea este un adăpost, tot aşa cum şi argintul este un adăpost, dar câştigul cunoaşterii înţelepciunii este acela că dă viaţă celui ce o are.

For wisdom is a defence, even as money is a defence; but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom preserveth the life of him that hath it.

13 C aută să înţelegi lucrarea lui Dumnezeu: cine poate îndrepta ceea ce El a îndoit?

Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?

14 C ând vremurile sunt bune, fii fericit! Când vremurile sunt rele, cugetă: Dumnezeu le-a făcut şi pe unele şi pe celelalte, astfel încât omul să nu poată afla nimic despre viitorul său.

In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider; yea, God hath made the one side by side with the other, to the end that man should not find out anything that shall be after him.

15 A m văzut tot felul de lucruri în timpul vieţii mele deşarte: un om drept pierind în dreptatea lui, iar altul nedrept continuându-şi viaţa în nedreptatea lui.

All this have I seen in my days of vanity: there is a righteous man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his evil-doing.

16 N u fi prea drept şi nu te arăta prea înţelept! De ce să te distrugi singur?

Be not righteous overmuch; neither make thyself overwise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?

17 Î nsă nu fi nici foarte rău şi nu fi nici nesăbuit! De ce să mori înainte de vreme?

Be not overmuch wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?

18 E ste bine pe una dintre atenţionări să o apuci, iar pe cealaltă să n-o laşi din mână, căci cine se teme de Dumnezeu le va urma pe amândouă.

It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from that withdraw not thy hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth from them all.

19 Î nţelepciunea dă mai multă tărie înţeleptului, decât ar da zece conducători destoinici unei cetăţi.

Wisdom is a strength to the wise man more than ten rulers that are in a city.

20 N u există pe pământ nici un om drept care să facă numai binele şi niciodată să nu păcătuiască!

Surely there is not a righteous man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.

21 Î n plus, nu lua aminte la toate cuvintele care se spun, ca nu cumva să-l auzi pe slujitorul tău blestemându-te!

Also take not heed unto all words that are spoken, lest thou hear thy servant curse thee;

22 T u ştii în inima ta că, de mai multe ori, chiar tu însuţi i-ai blestemat pe alţii.

for oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.

23 T oate acestea le-am cercetat cu înţelepciune şi mi-am zis: «Mă voi înţelepţi!», dar înţelepciunea s-a îndepărtat de la mine.

All this have I proved in wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.

24 O rice ar fi ea, este departe şi învăluită în mister! Cine o va găsi?!

That which is, is far off and exceeding deep; who can find it out?

25 M -am hotărât să cunosc, să cercetez şi să caut înţelepciunea şi discernământul şi să pricep stupiditatea răutăţii şi nebunia nesăbuinţei.

I turned about, and my heart was set to know and to search out, and to seek wisdom and the reason of things, and to know that wickedness is folly, and that foolishness is madness.

26 A m descoperit că mai amară decât moartea este femeia care întinde curse, al cărei suflet este o capcană şi ale cărei mâini sunt nişte lanţuri. Cel plăcut înaintea lui Dumnezeu scapă de ea, dar cel păcătos este prins de ea.

And I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets, and whose hands are bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.

27 I ată ce am descoperit, zice oratorul: am cercetat lucrurile unul după altul, căutând să le pricep rostul,

Behold, this have I found, saith the Preacher, laying one thing to another, to find out the account;

28 î nsă, din tot ce a căutat sufletul meu, nu am găsit decât aceasta: din o mie de oameni am găsit un bărbat drept, dar nu am găsit nici măcar o femeie dreaptă.

which my soul still seeketh, but I have not found: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.

29 S ingurul lucru sigur pe care l-am descoperit este că Dumnezeu l-a făcut pe om drept, dar omul umblă cu multe şiretlicuri.“

Behold, this only have I found: that God made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.
