1 S amuel murise. Tot Israelul s-a adunat şi l-a bocit, apoi l-au îngropat acasă la el, în Rama. După aceea, David a plecat în pustia Paran.

And Samuel died; and all Israel gathered themselves together, and lamented him, and buried him in his house at Ramah. And David arose, and went down to the wilderness of Paran.

2 Î n Maon trăia un bărbat a cărui avere era în Carmel. Era un om foarte bogat: avea trei mii de oi şi o mie de capre şi tocmai se afla în Carmel pentru a-şi tunde oile.

And there was a man in Maon, whose possessions were in Carmel; and the man was very great, and he had three thousand sheep, and a thousand goats: and he was shearing his sheep in Carmel.

3 N umele lui era Nabal, iar numele soţiei lui era Abigail. Femeia era ageră la minte şi frumoasă, însă bărbatul era aspru şi rău în faptele lui; el era calebit.

Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail; and the woman was of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the house of Caleb.

4 Î n timp ce era în pustie, David a auzit că Nabal îşi tunde oile

And David heard in the wilderness that Nabal was shearing his sheep.

5 ş i a trimis zece tineri, spunându-le: „Duceţi-vă la Carmel! Când ajungeţi la Nabal să-l salutaţi în numele meu,

And David sent ten young men, and David said unto the young men, Get you up to Carmel, and go to Nabal, and greet him in my name:

6 z icându-i: «Să trăieşti în pace tu, familia ta şi tot ceea ce este al tău!

and thus shall ye say to him that liveth in prosperity, Peace be unto thee, and peace be to thy house, and peace be unto all that thou hast.

7 A m auzit că tunzi oile! Păstorii tăi au fost împreună cu noi, iar noi nu i-am jignit şi nimic din ce era al lor nu s-a pierdut în tot timpul cât au fost în Carmel.

And now I have heard that thou hast shearers: thy shepherds have now been with us, and we did them no hurt, neither was there aught missing unto them, all the while they were in Carmel.

8 Î ntreabă-ţi slujitorii şi îţi vor spune. Fie ca tinerii să găsească bunăvoinţă în ochii tăi pentru că venim într-o zi de bucurie. Acum dă-le, te rog, slujitorilor tăi şi fiului tău David, ceea ce ai la îndemână.»“

Ask thy young men, and they will tell thee: wherefore let the young men find favor in thine eyes; for we come in a good day: give, I pray thee, whatsoever cometh to thy hand, unto thy servants, and to thy son David.

9 T inerii lui David au venit la Nabal şi i-au spus toate aceste cuvinte în numele lui David, după care au aşteptat.

And when David's young men came, they spake to Nabal according to all those words in the name of David, and ceased.

10 N abal însă le-a răspuns tinerilor lui David: „Cine este David şi cine este fiul lui Işai? Astăzi sunt mulţi slujitori care fug de la stăpânii lor.

And Nabal answered David's servants, and said, Who is David? and who is the son of Jesse? there are many servants now-a-days that break away every man from his master.

11 S ă iau oare pâinea mea, apa mea şi carnea pe care am pregătit-o pentru cei ce-mi tund oile şi s-o dau unor oameni care sunt de nu ştiu unde?“

Shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my flesh that I have killed for my shearers, and give it unto men of whom I know not whence they are?

12 T inerii lui David au făcut cale-ntoarsă şi i-au spus lui David toate aceste cuvinte.

So David's young men turned on their way, and went back, and came and told him according to all these words.

13 A tunci David le-a spus oamenilor săi: „Fiecare să-şi încingă sabia!“ Fiecare şi-a încins sabia. David şi-a încins şi el sabia şi după el au venit cam patru sute de bărbaţi, în timp ce două sute au rămas la bagaje.

And David said unto his men, Gird ye on every man his sword. And they girded on every man his sword; and David also girded on his sword: and there went up after David about four hundred men; and two hundred abode by the baggage.

14 U nul dintre slujitori i-a spus lui Abigail, soţia lui Nabal: „David a trimis, din pustie, mesageri pentru a-l saluta pe stăpânul nostru, iar acesta s-a răstit la ei.

But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's wife, saying, Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to salute our master; and he railed at them.

15 T otuşi aceşti oameni au fost foarte buni cu noi, nu ne-au jignit şi nu am pierdut nimic cât timp am mers cu ei, atunci când eram pe câmp.

But the men were very good unto us, and we were not hurt, neither missed we anything, as long as we went with them, when we were in the fields:

16 A u fost un zid pentru noi atât ziua, cât şi noaptea, în tot timpul cât am fost cu ei, păzind oile.

they were a wall unto us both by night and by day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep.

17 A cum, gândeşte-te şi vezi ce ai de făcut, pentru că răul este hotărât împotriva stăpânului nostru şi împotriva întregii lui familii. El este un om atât de rău, încât nimeni nu poate să-i vorbească.“

Now therefore know and consider what thou wilt do; for evil is determined against our master, and against all his house: for he is such a worthless fellow, that one cannot speak to him.

18 A bigail a luat în grabă o sută de pâini, două burdufuri de vin, cinci oi gata pregătite, cinci măsuri de grâne prăjite, o sută de ciorchini de stafide şi două sute de prăjituri din smochine şi le-a aşezat pe măgari.

Then Abigail made haste, and took two hundred loaves, and two bottles of wine, and five sheep ready dressed, and five measures of parched grain, and a hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on asses.

19 A poi le-a spus slujitorilor ei: „Mergeţi înaintea mea, iar eu vă voi urma!“ Soţului ei, Nabal, nu i-a spus însă nimic.

And she said unto her young men, Go on before me; behold, I come after you. But she told not her husband Nabal.

20 Î n timp ce ea cobora, călare pe măgar, prin zona umbrită a muntelui, David şi oamenii lui tocmai veneau înspre ea, aşa că aceasta i-a întâlnit.

And it was so, as she rode on her ass, and came down by the covert of the mountain, that, behold, David and his men came down toward her; and she met them.

21 D avid zisese: „Degeaba am păzit în pustie tot ceea ce avea acest om, astfel încât nu i s-a pierdut nimic. El mi-a întors rău pentru bine.

Now David had said, Surely in vain have I kept all that this fellow hath in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that pertained unto him: and he hath returned me evil for good.

22 D umnezeu să se poarte cu toată asprimea cu David dacă voi lăsa în viaţă, până dimineaţă, vreun bărbat dintre toţi cei ce sunt ai lui Nabal.“

God do so unto the enemies of David, and more also, if I leave of all that pertain to him by the morning light so much as one man-child.

23 C ând Abigail l-a văzut pe David, a descălecat repede de pe măgar, şi-a plecat faţa înaintea lui şi i s-a închinat până la pământ.

And when Abigail saw David, she hasted, and alighted from her ass, and fell before David on her face, and bowed herself to the ground.

24 C ăzând la picioarele lui i-a zis: – Numai asupra mea să fie pedeapsa, stăpânul meu. Lasă, te rog, pe slujitoarea ta să-ţi vorbească şi ascultă cuvintele ei.

And she fell at his feet, and said, Upon me, my lord, upon me be the iniquity; and let thy handmaid, I pray thee, speak in thine ears, and hear thou the words of thy handmaid.

25 T e rog, stăpânul meu, nu-ţi pune mintea cu acel om rău, care este Nabal, pentru că aşa cum îi este numele, aşa este şi el. Nabal îi este numele şi nebunia se ţine de el. Eu însă, slujitoarea ta, nu i-am văzut pe tinerii stăpânului meu, pe care tu i-ai trimis.

Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard this worthless fellow, even Nabal; for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I thy handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom thou didst send.

26 A cum, stăpânul meu, viu este Domnul şi viu este sufletul tău că Domnul te-a oprit de la vărsare de sânge şi de la răzbunare. Duşmanii tăi şi cei ce vor răul stăpânului meu să fie ca Nabal!

Now therefore, my lord, as Jehovah liveth, and as thy soul liveth, seeing Jehovah hath withholden thee from bloodguiltiness, and from avenging thyself with thine own hand, now therefore let thine enemies, and them that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal.

27 D arul acesta, pe care l-a adus slujitoarea ta stăpânului meu, să fie dat tinerilor care-l urmează pe stăpânul meu.

And now this present which thy servant hath brought unto my lord, let it be given unto the young men that follow my lord.

28 I artă, te rog, păcatul slujitoarei tale, căci Domnul, cu adevărat, îi va face stăpânului meu o dinastie trainică, deoarece stăpânul meu poartă războaiele Domnului. Să nu se găsească răutate în tine în toate zilele tale.

Forgive, I pray thee, the trespass of thy handmaid: for Jehovah will certainly make my lord a sure house, because my lord fighteth the battles of Jehovah; and evil shall not be found in thee all thy days.

29 I ar dacă vreun om se va ridica pentru a te urmări şi pentru a căuta să-ţi ia viaţa, viaţa stăpânului meu va fi legată în mănunchiul celor vii, la Domnul, Dumnezeul tău. În schimb, viaţa duşmanilor tăi El o va azvârli ca dintr-o praştie.

And though men be risen up to pursue thee, and to seek thy soul, yet the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with Jehovah thy God; and the souls of thine enemies, them shall he sling out, as from the hollow of a sling.

30 C ând Domnul îi va face stăpânului meu tot ceea ce a spus de bine cu privire la el şi îl va pune drept conducător peste Israel,

And it shall come to pass, when Jehovah shall have done to my lord according to all the good that he hath spoken concerning thee, and shall have appointed thee prince over Israel,

31 s ă nu fie vărsarea de sânge şi răzbunarea o remuşcare sau o poticnire a inimii pentru stăpânul meu. Când Domnul îi va face bine stăpânului meu atunci să-ţi aduci aminte de slujitoarea ta.

that this shall be no grief unto thee, nor offence of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed blood without cause, or that my lord hath avenged himself. And when Jehovah shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember thy handmaid.

32 D avid i-a răspuns lui Abigail: – Binecuvântat să fie Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel, Care te-a trimis astăzi să mă întâlneşti.

And David said to Abigail, Blessed be Jehovah, the God of Israel, who sent thee this day to meet me:

33 B inecuvântată să fie judecata ta şi binecuvântată să fii tu, care m-ai oprit în această zi de la vărsare de sânge şi de la răzbunare.

and blessed be thy discretion, and blessed be thou, that hast kept me this day from bloodguiltiness, and from avenging myself with mine own hand.

34 V iu este Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel, Care m-a oprit să-ţi fac rău, că dacă nu te-ai fi grăbit să vii în întâmpinarea mea, până în zorii dimineţii nu ar fi fost lăsat în viaţă nici un bărbat dintre cei ce sunt ai lui Nabal.

For in very deed, as Jehovah, the God of Israel, liveth, who hath withholden me from hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light so much as one man-child.

35 A poi David a luat din mâna ei ceea ce ea îi adusese şi i-a zis: – Du-te în pace la casa ta! Să ştii că am ascultat de glasul tău şi că ţi-am împlinit cererea.

So David received of her hand that which she had brought him: and he said unto her, Go up in peace to thy house; see, I have hearkened to thy voice, and have accepted thy person.

36 C ând Abigail a ajuns la Nabal, acesta dădea în casa sa un ospăţ, ca ospăţul unui rege. Inima lui Nabal era veselă şi el era foarte beat. Ea nu i-a spus nimic până în zorii dimineţii.

And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal's heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken: wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light.

37 D imineaţa, când îi trecuse beţia lui Nabal, soţia lui i-a istorisit tot ce se întâmplase. Atunci inima lui Nabal a primit o lovitură de moarte şi el s-a făcut ca o piatră.

And it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, that his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone.

38 C am după zece zile Domnul l-a lovit pe Nabal, iar acesta a murit.

And it came to pass about ten days after, that Jehovah smote Nabal, so that he died.

39 C ând David a auzit că Nabal a murit, a zis: – Binecuvântat să fie Domnul, Care mi-a apărat cauza în ocara pe care mi-a adus-o Nabal şi l-a oprit pe robul Său de la a face rău. Domnul a făcut ca răutatea lui Nabal să se întoarcă împotriva capului său. Apoi David i-a dat de veste lui Abigail că vrea s-o ia de soţie.

And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be Jehovah, that hath pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept back his servant from evil: and the evil-doing of Nabal hath Jehovah returned upon his own head. And David sent and spake concerning Abigail, to take her to him to wife.

40 C ând slujitorii lui David au ajuns la Abigail, la Carmel, i-au zis: – David ne-a trimis la tine ca să te luăm pentru a-i fi soţie.

And when the servants of David were come to Abigail to Carmel, they spake unto her, saying, David hath sent us unto thee, to take thee to him to wife.

41 A tunci ea s-a sculat şi s-a prosternat cu faţa la pământ, zicând: – Iată, slujitoarea ta este gata să spele picioarele slujitorilor stăpânului meu.

And she arose, and bowed herself with her face to the earth, and said, Behold, thy handmaid is a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.

42 A poi Abigail s-a sculat repede, a încălecat pe un măgar şi a plecat împreună cu cinci slujitoare ale sale. I-a urmat pe oamenii lui David şi a devenit soţia acestuia;

And Abigail hasted, and arose, and rode upon an ass, with five damsels of hers that followed her; and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife.

43 D avid îşi luase de soţie şi pe Ahinoam din Izreel, astfel că amândouă au devenit soţiile lui.

David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel; and they became both of them his wives.

44 S aul a dat-o pe fiica sa Mihal, care era soţia lui David, lui Paltiel, fiul lui Laiş, care era din Galim.

Now Saul had given Michal his daughter, David's wife, to Palti the son of Laish, who was of Gallim.
