1 C uando Jesús terminó de dar instrucciones a sus doce discípulos, se fue de allí a enseñar y a predicar en las ciudades de ellos. Los mensajeros de Juan el Bautista

And it came to pass when Jesus had finished commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and preach in their cities.

2 A l oír Juan en la cárcel los hechos de Cristo, le envió dos de sus discípulos

Now when John heard in the prison the works of the Christ, he sent by his disciples

3 a preguntarle: —¿Eres tú aquel que había de venir o esperaremos a otro?

and said unto him, Art thou he that cometh, or look we for another?

4 R espondiendo Jesús, les dijo: —Id y haced saber a Juan las cosas que oís y veis.

And Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and tell John the things which ye hear and see:

5 L os ciegos ven, los cojos andan, los leprosos son limpiados, los sordos oyen, los muertos son resucitados y a los pobres es anunciado el evangelio;

the blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good tidings preached to them.

6 y bienaventurado es el que no halle tropiezo en mí.

And blessed is he, whosoever shall find no occasion of stumbling in me.

7 M ientras ellos se iban, comenzó Jesús a hablar de Juan a la gente: «¿Qué salisteis a ver al desierto? ¿Una caña sacudida por el viento?

And as these went their way, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to behold? a reed shaken with the wind?

8 ¿ O qué salisteis a ver? ¿A un hombre cubierto de vestiduras delicadas? Los que llevan vestiduras delicadas, en las casas de los reyes están.

But what went ye out to see? a man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they that wear soft raiment are in king's houses.

9 P ero ¿qué salisteis a ver? ¿A un profeta? Sí, os digo, y más que profeta,

But wherefore went ye out? to see a prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.

10 p orque éste es de quien está escrito: »“Yo envío mi mensajero delante de ti, el cual preparará tu camino delante de ti.”

This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, Who shall prepare thy way before thee.

11 » De cierto os digo que entre los que nacen de mujer no se ha levantado otro mayor que Juan el Bautista; y, sin embargo, el más pequeño en el reino de los cielos es mayor que él.

Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not arisen a greater than John the Baptist: yet he that is but little in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

12 » Desde los días de Juan el Bautista hasta ahora, el reino de los cielos sufre violencia, y los violentos lo arrebatan.

And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and men of violence take it by force.

13 T odos los profetas y la Ley profetizaron hasta Juan.

For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.

14 Y si queréis recibirlo, él es aquel Elías que había de venir.

And if ye are willing to receive it, this is Elijah, that is to come.

15 E l que tiene oídos para oír, oiga.

He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

16 P ero ¿a qué compararé esta generación? Es semejante a los muchachos que se sientan en las plazas y gritan a sus compañeros,

But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the marketplaces, who call unto their fellows

17 d iciendo: “Os tocamos flauta y no bailasteis; os entonamos canciones de duelo y no llorasteis”,

and say, We piped unto you, and ye did not dance; we wailed, and ye did not mourn.

18 p orque vino Juan, que ni comía ni bebía, y dicen: “Demonio tiene.”

For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a demon.

19 V ino el Hijo del hombre, que come y bebe, y dicen: “Éste es un hombre comilón y bebedor de vino, amigo de publicanos y pecadores.” Pero la sabiduría es justificada por sus hijos.» Ayes sobre las ciudades impenitentes

The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold, a gluttonous man and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners! And wisdom is justified by her works.

20 E ntonces comenzó a reconvenir a las ciudades en las cuales había hecho muchos de sus milagros, porque no se habían arrepentido, diciendo:

Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not.

21 « ¡Ay de ti, Corazín! ¡Ay de ti, Betsaida!, porque si en Tiro y en Sidón se hubieran hecho los milagros que han sido hechos en vosotras, tiempo ha que en vestidos ásperos y ceniza se habrían arrepentido.

Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon which were done in you, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

22 P or tanto os digo que en el día del juicio será más tolerable el castigo para Tiro y para Sidón que para vosotras.

But I say unto you, it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you.

23 Y tú, Capernaúm, que eres levantada hasta el cielo, hasta el Hades serás abatida, porque si en Sodoma se hubieran hecho los milagros que han sido hechos en ti, habría permanecido hasta el día de hoy.

And thou, Capernaum, shalt thou be exalted unto heaven? thou shalt go down unto Hades: for if the mighty works had been done in Sodom which were done in thee, it would have remained until this day.

24 P or tanto os digo que en el día del juicio será más tolerable el castigo para la tierra de Sodoma que para ti.» Venid a mí y descansad

But I say unto you that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.

25 E n aquel tiempo, respondiendo Jesús, dijo: «Te alabo, Padre, Señor del cielo y de la tierra, porque escondiste estas cosas de los sabios y de los entendidos, y las revelaste a los niños.

At that season Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou didst hide these things from the wise and understanding, and didst reveal them unto babes:

26 S í, Padre, porque así te agradó.

yea, Father, for so it was well-pleasing in thy sight.

27 » Todas las cosas me fueron entregadas por mi Padre; y nadie conoce al Hijo, sino el Padre, ni nadie conoce al Padre, sino el Hijo y aquel a quien el Hijo se lo quiera revelar.

All things have been delivered unto me of my Father: and no one knoweth the Son, save the Father; neither doth any know the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son willeth to reveal him.

28 V enid a mí todos los que estáis trabajados y cargados, y yo os haré descansar.

Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29 L levad mi yugo sobre vosotros y aprended de mí, que soy manso y humilde de corazón, y hallaréis descanso para vuestras almas,

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

30 p orque mi yugo es fácil y ligera mi carga.»

For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
