1 D ije yo en mi corazón: «Vamos ahora, te probaré con el placer: gozarás de lo bueno.» Pero he aquí, esto también era vanidad.

I said in my heart, Come now, I will prove thee with mirth; therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also was vanity.

2 A la risa dije: «Enloqueces»; y al placer: «¿De qué sirve esto?»

I said of laughter, It is mad; and of mirth, What doeth it?

3 D ecidí en mi corazón agasajar mi carne con vino y, sin renunciar mi corazón a la sabiduría, entregarme a la necedad, hasta ver cuál es el bien en el que los hijos de los hombres se ocupan debajo del cielo todos los días de su vida.

I searched in my heart how to cheer my flesh with wine, my heart yet guiding me with wisdom, and how to lay hold on folly, till I might see what it was good for the sons of men that they should do under heaven all the days of their life.

4 A cometí grandes obras, me edifiqué casas, planté viñas para mí;

I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards;

5 m e hice huertos y jardines, y planté en ellos toda clase de árboles frutales.

I made me gardens and parks, and I planted trees in them of all kinds of fruit;

6 M e hice estanques de aguas, para regar de ellos el bosque donde crecían los árboles.

I made me pools of water, to water therefrom the forest where trees were reared;

7 C ompré siervos y siervas, y tuve siervos nacidos en casa. Tuve muchas más vacas y ovejas que cuantos fueron antes de mí en Jerusalén.

I bought men-servants and maid-servants, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of herds and flocks, above all that were before me in Jerusalem;

8 A montoné también plata y oro, y preciados tesoros dignos de reyes y de provincias. Me hice de cantores y cantoras, y de toda clase de instrumentos musicales, y gocé de los placeres de los hijos de los hombres.

I gathered me also silver and gold, and the treasure of kings and of the provinces; I gat me men-singers and women-singers, and the delights of the sons of men, musical instruments, and that of all sorts.

9 F ui engrandecido y prosperé más que todos cuantos fueron antes de mí en Jerusalén. Además de esto, conservé conmigo mi sabiduría.

So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me.

10 N o negué a mis ojos ninguna cosa que desearan, ni privé a mi corazón de placer alguno, porque mi corazón se gozaba de todo lo que hacía. Ésta fue la recompensa de todas mis fatigas.

And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them; I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced because of all my labor; and this was my portion from all my labor.

11 M iré luego todas las obras de mis manos y el trabajo que me tomé para hacerlas; y he aquí, todo es vanidad y aflicción de espíritu, y sin provecho debajo del sol.

Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labor that I had labored to do; and, behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was no profit under the sun.

12 D espués volví a considerar la sabiduría, los desvaríos y la necedad; pues ¿qué podrá hacer el hombre que venga después de este rey? Nada, sino lo que ya ha sido hecho.

And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness, and folly: for what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been done long ago.

13 H e visto que la sabiduría aventaja a la necedad, como la luz a las tinieblas.

Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness.

14 E l sabio tiene sus ojos abiertos, mas el necio anda en tinieblas. Pero también comprendí que lo mismo ha de acontecerle al uno como al otro.

The wise man's eyes are in his head, and the fool walketh in darkness: and yet I perceived that one event happeneth to them all.

15 E ntonces dije en mi corazón: «Como sucederá al necio, me sucederá a mí. ¿Para qué, pues, me he esforzado hasta ahora por hacerme más sabio?» Y dije en mi corazón que también esto era vanidad.

Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so will it happen even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then said I in my heart, that this also is vanity.

16 P orque ni del sabio ni del necio habrá memoria para siempre; pues en los días venideros todo será olvidado, y lo mismo morirá el sabio que el necio.

For of the wise man, even as of the fool, there is no remembrance for ever; seeing that in the days to come all will have been long forgotten. And how doth the wise man die even as the fool!

17 P or tanto, aborrecí la vida, pues la obra que se hace debajo del sol me era fastidiosa, por cuanto todo es vanidad y aflicción de espíritu.

So I hated life, because the work that is wrought under the sun was grievous unto me; for all is vanity and a striving after wind.

18 A simismo aborrecí todo el trabajo que había hecho debajo del sol, y que habré de dejar a otro que vendrá después de mí.

And I hated all my labor wherein I labored under the sun, seeing that I must leave it unto the man that shall be after me.

19 Y ¿quién sabe si será sabio o necio el que se adueñe de todo el trabajo en que me afané y en el que ocupé mi sabiduría debajo del sol? Esto también es vanidad.

And who knoweth whether he will be a wise man or a fool? yet will he have rule over all my labor wherein I have labored, and wherein I have showed myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity.

20 V olvió entonces a desilusionarse mi corazón de todo el trabajo en que me afané, y en el que había ocupado debajo del sol mi sabiduría.

Therefore I turned about to cause my heart to despair concerning all the labor wherein I had labored under the sun.

21 ¡ Que el hombre trabaje con sabiduría, con ciencia y rectitud, y que haya de dar sus bienes a otro que nunca trabajó en ello! También es esto vanidad y un gran mal.

For there is a man whose labor is with wisdom, and with knowledge, and with skilfulness; yet to a man that hath not labored therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.

22 P orque ¿qué obtiene el hombre de todo su trabajo y de la fatiga de su corazón con que se afana debajo del sol?

For what hath a man of all his labor, and of the striving of his heart, wherein he laboreth under the sun?

23 P orque todos sus días no son sino dolores, y sus trabajos molestias, pues ni aun de noche su corazón reposa. Esto también es vanidad.

For all his days are but sorrows, and his travail is grief; yea, even in the night his heart taketh no rest. This also is vanity.

24 N o hay cosa mejor para el hombre que comer y beber, y gozar del fruto de su trabajo. He visto que esto también procede de la mano de Dios.

There is nothing better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and make his soul enjoy good in his labor. This also I saw, that it is from the hand of God.

25 P orque, ¿quién comerá y quién se gozará sino uno mismo?

For who can eat, or who can have enjoyment, more than I?

26 P orque al hombre que le agrada, Dios le da sabiduría, ciencia y gozo; pero al pecador le da el trabajo de recoger y amontonar, para dejárselo al que agrada a Dios. También esto es vanidad y aflicción de espíritu.

For to the man that pleaseth him God giveth wisdom, and knowledge, and joy; but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that pleaseth God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.
