1 T omó entonces Samuel una redoma de aceite, la derramó sobre su cabeza, lo besó, y le dijo: —¿No te ha ungido Jehová por príncipe sobre su pueblo Israel?

Then Samuel took the vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not that Jehovah hath anointed thee to be prince over his inheritance?

2 H oy, después que te hayas apartado de mí, hallarás dos hombres junto al sepulcro de Raquel, en Selsa, en el territorio de Benjamín, los cuales te dirán: “Las asnas que habías ido a buscar se han hallado; tu padre ha dejado ya de inquietarse por las asnas, y está afligido por vosotros, y dice: ‘¿Qué haré acerca de mi hijo?’”

When thou art departed from me to-day, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel's sepulchre, in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The asses which thou wentest to seek are found; and, lo, thy father hath left off caring for the asses, and is anxious for you, saying, What shall I do for my son?

3 M ás adelante, cuando llegues a la encina de Tabor, te saldrán al encuentro tres hombres que suben a Dios, en Bet-el, llevando uno tres cabritos, otro tres tortas de pan y el tercero una vasija de vino.

Then shalt thou go on forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the oak of Tabor; and there shall meet thee there three men going up to God to Beth-el, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine:

4 L uego que te hayan saludado, te darán dos panes, que tú tomarás de su mano.

and they will salute thee, and give thee two loaves of bread, which thou shalt receive of their hand.

5 D espués de esto llegarás al collado de Dios, donde está la guarnición de los filisteos; y cuando entres en la ciudad encontrarás una compañía de profetas que descienden del lugar alto, precedidos de salterio, pandero, flauta y arpa, y ellos profetizando.

After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a band of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a timbrel, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they will be prophesying:

6 E ntonces el espíritu de Jehová vendrá sobre ti con poder y profetizarás con ellos, y serás mudado en otro hombre.

and the Spirit of Jehovah will come mightily upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.

7 C uando se te hayan cumplido estas señales, haz lo que te parezca bien, porque Dios está contigo.

And let it be, when these signs are come unto thee, that thou do as occasion shall serve thee; for God is with thee.

8 L uego bajarás delante de mí a Gilgal; entonces descenderé yo junto a ti para ofrecer holocaustos y sacrificar ofrendas de paz. Espera siete días, hasta que yo vaya a tu encuentro y te enseñe lo que has de hacer.

And thou shalt go down before me to Gilgal; and, behold, I will come down unto thee, to offer burnt-offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace-offerings: seven days shalt thou tarry, till I come unto thee, and show thee what thou shalt do.

9 A conteció luego, que apenas volvió él la espalda para apartarse de Samuel, le mudó Dios el corazón; y todas estas señales acontecieron en aquel día.

And it was so, that, when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day.

10 C uando llegaron allá al collado, la compañía de los profetas les salió al encuentro. Entonces el espíritu de Dios vino sobre él con poder, y profetizó entre ellos.

And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a band of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came mightily upon him, and he prophesied among them.

11 T odos los que lo conocían de antes, al verlo que profetizaba con los profetas, se decían unos a otros: «¿Qué le ha sucedido al hijo de Cis? ¿Saúl también está entre los profetas?»

And it came to pass, when all that knew him beforetime saw that, behold, he prophesied with the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?

12 Y alguno de allí preguntó: «¿Y quién es el padre de estos?» Por esta causa se hizo proverbio: «¿También Saúl entre los profetas?»

And one of the same place answered and said, And who is their father? Therefore it became a proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?

13 C uando cesó de profetizar, llegó al lugar alto.

And when he had made an end of prophesying, he came to the high place.

14 U n tío de Saúl dijo a él y a su criado: —¿A dónde fuisteis? Él respondió: —A buscar las asnas; y como vimos que no aparecían, acudimos a Samuel.

And Saul's uncle said unto him and to his servant, Whither went ye? And he said, To seek the asses; and when we saw that they were not found, we came to Samuel.

15 D ijo el tío de Saúl: —Te ruego que me cuentes qué os dijo Samuel.

And Saul's uncle said, Tell me, I pray thee, what Samuel said unto you.

16 S aúl respondió a su tío: —Nos declaró expresamente que las asnas habían sido halladas. Pero del asunto del reino, de que Samuel le había hablado, no le contó nada.

And Saul said unto his uncle, He told us plainly that the asses were found. But concerning the matter of the kingdom, whereof Samuel spake, he told him not.

17 D espués Samuel convocó al pueblo delante de Jehová en Mizpa,

And Samuel called the people together unto Jehovah to Mizpah;

18 y dijo a los hijos de Israel: «Así ha dicho Jehová, el Dios de Israel: Yo saqué a Israel de Egipto, y os libré de manos de los egipcios y de manos de todos los reinos que os afligieron.

and he said unto the children of Israel, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all the kingdoms that oppressed you:

19 P ero vosotros habéis desechado hoy a vuestro Dios, que os guarda de todas vuestras aflicciones y angustias, y habéis dicho: “No, tú nos darás un rey”. Ahora, pues, presentaos delante de Jehová por vuestras tribus y familias.»

but ye have this day rejected your God, who himself saveth you out of all your calamities and your distresses; and ye have said unto him, Nay, but set a king over us. Now therefore present yourselves before Jehovah by your tribes, and by your thousands.

20 S amuel hizo acercarse a todas las tribus de Israel, y fue designada la tribu de Benjamín.

So Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel near, and the tribe of Benjamin was taken.

21 H izo que se acercara la tribu de Benjamín por familias, y fue designada la familia de Matri; y de ella fue tomado Saúl hijo de Cis. Lo buscaron, pero no fue hallado.

And he brought the tribe of Benjamin near by their families; and the family of the Matrites was taken; and Saul the son of Kish was taken: but when they sought him, he could not be found.

22 P reguntaron, pues, otra vez a Jehová si aún no había concurrido allí aquel hombre. Y respondió Jehová: «Está ahí, escondido entre el bagaje.»

Therefore they asked of Jehovah further, Is there yet a man to come hither? And Jehovah answered, Behold, he hath hid himself among the baggage.

23 E ntonces corrieron, lo sacaron de allí y, puesto en medio del pueblo, sobresalía por encima de todos de los hombros para arriba.

And they ran and fetched him thence; and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.

24 S amuel dijo a todo el pueblo: —¿Habéis visto al elegido de Jehová? No hay nadie como él en todo el pueblo. Entonces el pueblo gritó con alegría: —¡Viva el rey!

And Samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom Jehovah hath chosen, that there is none like him along all the people? And all the people shouted, and said, Long live the king.

25 S amuel expuso luego al pueblo las leyes del reino, y las escribió en un libro, el cual guardó delante de Jehová.

Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before Jehovah. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.

26 Y envió Samuel a todo el pueblo cada uno a su casa. Saúl también se fue a su casa en Gabaa, y lo acompañaron los hombres de guerra cuyos corazones Dios había tocado.

And Saul also went to his house to Gibeah; and there went with him the host, whose hearts God had touched.

27 P ero algunos perversos dijeron: «¿Cómo nos ha de salvar éste?» Lo despreciaron y no le llevaron presentes; pero él disimuló.

But certain worthless fellows said, How shall this man save us? And they despised him, and brought him no present. But he held his peace.
