1 J osué mandó llamar a los rubenitas y gaditas, y a la media tribu de Manasés,

Then Joshua called the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh,

2 y les dijo: «Ustedes han cumplido con lo que les mandó Moisés, el siervo del Señor, y a mí me han obedecido en todo.

and said unto them, Ye have kept all that Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded you, and have hearkened unto my voice in all that I commanded you:

3 E n todo este tiempo no han abandonado a sus hermanos, y se han esforzado por cumplir los mandamientos del Señor nuestro Dios.

ye have not left your brethren these many days unto this day, but have kept the charge of the commandment of Jehovah your God.

4 A hora que nuestro Señor y Dios ha dado reposo a sus hermanos, tal y como lo había prometido, ya pueden volver a sus campamentos, a la tierra que es de ustedes, y que Moisés, el siervo del Señor, les dio al otro lado del Jordán.

And now Jehovah your God hath given rest unto your brethren, as he spake unto them: therefore now turn ye, and get you unto your tents, unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of Jehovah gave you beyond the Jordan.

5 S olamente les pido que cumplan fielmente el mandamiento y la ley que Moisés, siervo del Señor, les dio: que amen al Señor nuestro Dios, y que se mantengan en todos sus caminos; que cumplan sus mandamientos y lo sigan solamente a él, y que le sirvan con todo su corazón y con toda su alma.»

Only take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded you, to love Jehovah your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.

6 L uego de bendecirlos, Josué los despidió, y ellos volvieron a sus campamentos.

So Joshua blessed them, and sent them away; and they went unto their tents.

7 U na media tribu de Manasés había recibido de Moisés un territorio en Basán; a la otra mitad Josué le dio tierras entre sus hermanos en la región occidental del río Jordán. También a ellos los bendijo y los envió a sus campamentos.

Now to the one half-tribe of Manasseh Moses had given inheritance in Bashan; but unto the other half gave Joshua among their brethren beyond the Jordan westward; moreover when Joshua sent them away unto their tents, he blessed them,

8 L es dijo: «Vuelvan a sus tierras. Ya que llevan grandes riquezas y mucho ganado, y plata, oro, bronce y muchos vestidos, compartan con sus hermanos ese botín que le arrebataron a sus enemigos.»

and spake unto them, saying, Return with much wealth unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and with iron, and with very much raiment: divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren.

9 L os hijos de Rubén y de Gad, y la media tribu de Manasés, se marcharon y se alejaron de los hijos de Israel. Salieron de Silo, que estaba en la tierra de Canaán, y se fueron a Galaad, donde en conformidad con lo que el Señor le mandó a Moisés tenían sus posesiones.

And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go unto the land of Gilead, to the land of their possession, whereof they were possessed, according to the commandment of Jehovah by Moses.

10 C uando llegaron a los límites del Jordán, en la tierra de Canaán, los hijos de Rubén y de Gad y la media tribu de Manasés levantaron un altar muy grande e impresionante junto al río Jordán.

And when they came unto the region about the Jordan, that is in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by the Jordan, a great altar to look upon.

11 E l pueblo de Israel se enteró de que sus hermanos habían edificado ese altar junto al Jordán, frente a la tierra de Canaán,

And the children of Israel heard say, Behold, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built an altar in the forefront of the land of Canaan, in the region about the Jordan, on the side that pertaineth to the children of Israel.

12 y en cuanto lo supieron, todos ellos se reunieron en Silo, dispuestos a ir y pelear contra ellos,

And when the children of Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered themselves together at Shiloh, to go up against them to war.

13 a unque antes enviaron a Finés, hijo del sacerdote Eleazar, para que hablara en Galaad con los hijos de Rubén y Gad, y con la media tribu de Manasés.

And the children of Israel sent unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest,

14 F innes fue acompañado de diez jefes que representaban a cada una de las familias de Israel.

and with him ten princes, one prince of a fathers' house for each of the tribes of Israel; and they were every one of them head of their fathers' houses among the thousands of Israel.

15 É stos fueron a hablar con los hijos de Rubén y de Gad, y con la media tribu de Manasés, y les dijeron:

And they came unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, unto the land of Gilead, and they spake with them, saying,

16 « Todo el pueblo del Señor pregunta: “¿Por qué faltan a su juramento y pecan contra el Dios de Israel? ¿Por qué se apartan de su camino levantando un altar y rebelándose contra él?

Thus saith the whole congregation of Jehovah, What trespass is this that ye have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following Jehovah, in that ye have builded you an altar, to rebel this day against Jehovah?

17 ¿ No ha sido suficiente la maldad de Pegor, de la que todavía no estamos limpios, y por la cual hubo tantas muertes entre el pueblo del Señor,

Is the iniquity of Peor too little for us, from which we have not cleansed ourselves unto this day, although there came a plague upon the congregation of Jehovah,

18 p ara que ahora ustedes se aparten y ya no lo sigan?” Hoy ustedes se rebelan contra el Señor, ¡y mañana él se enojará contra todo el pueblo de Israel!

that ye must turn away this day from following Jehovah? and it will be, seeing ye rebel to-day against Jehovah, that to-morrow he will be wroth with the whole congregation of Israel.

19 S i creen que la tierra que les ha tocado es impura, vengan a nuestra tierra, que es posesión del Señor, pues allí está su tabernáculo, y tomen las tierras que deseen; pero no se rebelen contra el Señor ni contra nosotros, pues así lo dan a entender al levantar otro altar, aparte del que ya tiene el Señor nuestro Dios.

Howbeit, if the land of your possession be unclean, then pass ye over unto the land of the possession of Jehovah, wherein Jehovah's tabernacle dwelleth, and take possession among us: but rebel not against Jehovah, nor rebel against us, in building you an altar besides the altar of Jehovah our God.

20 ¿ Acaso no fue un gran pecado el que cometió Acán hijo de Zeraj, al tomar lo que estaba bajo maldición, y por eso el Señor se enojó con toda la comunidad de Israel? ¡Y ese hombre no murió solo en su maldad!»

Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the devoted thing, and wrath fell upon all the congregation of Israel? and that man perished not alone in his iniquity.

21 L os hijos de Rubén y de Gad, y la media tribu de Manasés, les respondieron a los jefes de las familias de Israel:

Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh answered, and spake unto the heads of the thousands of Israel,

22 « El Señor, el Dios de dioses, sabe que no lo hicimos por rebelión o por pecar contra él. El Señor, el Dios de dioses, lo sabe, y que lo sepa también Israel: si mentimos, que nos haga morir hoy mismo.

The Mighty One, God, Jehovah, the Mighty One, God, Jehovah, he knoweth; and Israel he shall know: if it be in rebellion, or if in trespass against Jehovah (save thou us not this day,)

23 S i levantamos el altar por no querer seguir al Señor, o para ofrecer a otros dioses sacrificios, holocaustos u ofrendas de paz, que el Señor mismo nos lo demande.

that we have built us an altar to turn away from following Jehovah; or if to offer thereon burnt-offering or meal-offering, or if to offer sacrifices of peace-offerings thereon, let Jehovah himself require it;

24 N osotros levantamos este altar por temor de que el día de mañana los hijos de ustedes les pregunten a los nuestros: “Y ustedes, ¿qué relación tienen con el Señor, Dios de Israel?

and if we have not rather out of carefulness done this, and of purpose, saying, In time to come your children might speak unto our children, saying, What have ye to do with Jehovah, the God of Israel?

25 S i el Señor ha puesto el Jordán por lindero entre ustedes, los hijos de Rubén y de Gad, y nosotros, así que ustedes no tienen nada que ver con el Señor.” Entonces los hijos de ustedes harían que los nuestros dejaran de honrarlo.

for Jehovah hath made the Jordan a border between us and you, ye children of Reuben and children of Gad; ye have no portion in Jehovah: so might your children make our children cease from fearing Jehovah.

26 P or eso decidimos levantar este altar. No para ofrecer holocaustos ni sacrificios,

Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt-offering, nor for sacrifice:

27 s ino como un testimonio entre ustedes y nosotros, y para los que nazcan después, para que sepan que nosotros podemos servir al Señor con nuestros holocaustos, sacrificios y ofrendas de paz. Así el día de mañana los hijos de ustedes no podrán decir a los nuestros que no tenemos nada que ver con el Señor.

but it shall be a witness between us and you, and between our generations after us, that we may do the service of Jehovah before him with our burnt-offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace-offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no portion in Jehovah.

28 N osotros pensamos: “Si acaso llegaran a decirnos eso a nosotros, o a nuestras generaciones futuras, les diremos que se fijen en la semejanza de este altar, que hicieron nuestros padres, con el altar del Señor; pues no lo hicieron para ofrecer holocaustos o sacrificios, sino como un testimonio entre ustedes y nosotros.”

Therefore said we, It shall be, when they so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we shall say, Behold the pattern of the altar of Jehovah, which our fathers made, not for burnt-offering, nor for sacrifice; but it is a witness between us and you.

29 N o permita el Señor que alguna vez nos rebelemos contra él, ni que nos apartemos o dejemos de seguirlo, porque no levantamos este altar para ofrecer holocaustos, ni ofrendas o sacrificios. Nosotros reconocemos que hay un solo altar del Señor nuestro Dios, y que éste se halla delante de su tabernáculo.»

Far be it from us that we should rebel against Jehovah, and turn away this day from following Jehovah, to build an altar for burnt-offering, for meal-offering, or for sacrifice, besides the altar of Jehovah our God that is before his tabernacle.

30 C uando el sacerdote Finés y los jefes del pueblo y de las tribus de Israel oyeron las palabras de los hijos de Rubén y de Gad, y de los hijos de Manasés, les pareció bien lo que dijeron.

And when Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation, even the heads of the thousands of Israel that were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh spake, it pleased them well.

31 E ntonces Finés, que era hijo del sacerdote Eleazar, les dijo: «Hoy hemos comprendido que el Señor está entre nosotros, porque ustedes no han intentado traicionar al Señor. Han librado de su enojo a los hijos de Israel.»

And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, This day we know that Jehovah is in the midst of us, because ye have not committed this trespass against Jehovah: now have ye delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of Jehovah.

32 E ntonces Finés, hijo del sacerdote Eleazar, y los jefes, dejaron a los hijos de Rubén y de Gad, y regresaron a la tierra de Canaán para informar de lo sucedido a los hijos de Israel.

And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, unto the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again.

33 L a respuesta les pareció bien, y bendijeron a Dios y no hablaron más de pelear ni de destruir la tierra que habitaban los hijos de Rubén y de Gad.

And the thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and spake no more of going up against them to war, to destroy the land wherein the children of Reuben and the children of Gad dwelt.

34 É stos, por su parte, llamaron al altar «Testimonio», pues dijeron: «Este altar es para nosotros un testimonio de que el Señor es Dios.»

And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar Ed: For, said they, it is a witness between us that Jehovah is God.
