1 S efatías hijo de Matán, Gedalías hijo de Pasjur, Jucal hijo de Selemías, y Pasjur hijo de Malquías, se enteraron de los mensajes que Jeremías daba a todo el pueblo, y de que les decía:

And Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur the son of Malchijah, heard the words that Jeremiah spake unto all the people, saying,

2 « Así ha dicho el Señor: “El que se quede en esta ciudad morirá a filo de espada, o de hambre, o de peste. Pero el que se pase al bando de los caldeos, vivirá. Su vida será su botín de guerra, y quedará con vida.”

Thus saith Jehovah, He that abideth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence; but he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live, and his life shall be unto him for a prey, and he shall live.

3 » Así ha dicho el Señor: “No hay duda. Esta ciudad será conquistada, y caerá en manos del ejército del rey de Babilonia.”»

Thus saith Jehovah, This city shall surely be given into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it.

4 P or eso los príncipes le dijeron al rey: «¡Este hombre merece la muerte! Con sus palabras desanima a los soldados que aún quedan en la ciudad, lo mismo que a todo el pueblo. ¡Este hombre no busca la paz del pueblo, sino su mal!»

Then the princes said unto the king, Let this man, we pray thee, be put to death; forasmuch as he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt.

5 E l rey Sedequías les respondió: «Ahí lo tienen, en sus manos. Aunque soy el rey, nada puedo hacer contra ustedes.»

And Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand; for the king is not he that can do anything against you.

6 E ntonces ellos le echaron mano a Jeremías y lo arrojaron en la cisterna de Malquías hijo de Hamelec, la cual estaba en el patio de la cárcel. Lo bajaron con sogas, y como en la cisterna no había agua, sino cieno, Jeremías quedó hundido en el cieno.

Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchijah the king's son, that was in the court of the guard: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire; and Jeremiah sank in the mire.

7 U n etíope llamado Ébed Mélec, que era eunuco de la casa real, se enteró de que Jeremías había sido puesto en la cisterna. Mientras el rey estaba sentado a la puerta de Benjamín,

Now when Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch, who was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon (the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin,)

8 É bed Mélec salió del palacio y fue a hablar con el rey. Le dijo:

Ebed-melech went forth out of the king's house, and spake to the king, saying,

9 « Mi señor y rey, todo lo que estos hombres han hecho con el profeta Jeremías está muy mal. Lo han echado en la cisterna, y allí se morirá de hambre, pues ya no hay pan en la ciudad.»

My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is like to die in the place where he is, because of the famine; for there is no more bread in the city.

10 E ntonces el rey mandó al mismo etíope Ébed Mélec que tomara treinta hombres de la corte, y que fuera a sacar de la cisterna al profeta Jeremías, antes de que se muriera.

Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from hence thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he die.

11 É bed Mélec se puso al mando de esos hombres, y entró en la tesorería, que estaba en la parte baja del palacio del rey, y tomó de allí trapos viejos y ropas raídas y andrajosas, y con unas sogas las echó a la cisterna donde estaba Jeremías.

So Ebed-melech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took thence rags and worn-out garments, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah.

12 L uego el etíope Ébed Mélec instruyó a Jeremías: «Ponte ahora estos trapos viejos, y estas ropas raídas y andrajosas, debajo de los sobacos, para que no te lastimen las sogas.» Y Jeremías lo hizo así.

And Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said unto Jeremiah, Put now these rags and worn-out garments under thine armholes under the cords. And Jeremiah did so.

13 D e ese modo, con sogas sacaron a Jeremías de la cisterna, y Jeremías se quedó en el patio de la cárcel. Sedequías consulta a Jeremías

So they drew up Jeremiah with the cords, and took him up out of the dungeon: and Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.

14 D espués de eso, el rey Sedequías ordenó que llevaran al profeta Jeremías a su presencia, y lo recibió en la tercera entrada de la casa del Señor. Allí el rey le dijo a Jeremías: «Voy a hacerte una pregunta, y quiero que me digas la verdad.»

Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took Jeremiah the prophet unto him into the third entry that is in the house of Jehovah: and the king said unto Jeremiah, I will ask thee a thing; hide nothing from me.

15 J eremías le respondió: «Si te digo la verdad, ordenarás que me maten. Y si te doy un consejo, no vas a hacerme caso.»

Then Jeremiah said unto Zedekiah, If I declare it unto thee, wilt thou not surely put me to death? and if I give thee counsel, thou wilt not hearken unto me.

16 E l rey Sedequías le hizo a Jeremías un juramento secreto. Le dijo: «Te juro por el Señor, que nos dio la vida, que no te mataré ni te pondré en manos de esos hombres que quieren matarte.»

So Zedekiah the king sware secretly unto Jeremiah, saying, As Jehovah liveth, that made us this soul, I will not put thee to death, neither will I give thee into the hand of these men that seek thy life.

17 E ntonces Jeremías le dijo a Sedequías: «Así ha dicho el Señor y Dios de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: “Si te entregas enseguida a los príncipes del rey de Babilonia, seguirás con vida y esta ciudad no será incendiada. Tú y los tuyos seguirán con vida.

Then said Jeremiah unto Zedekiah, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: If thou wilt go forth unto the king of Babylon's princes, then thy soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and thou shalt live, and thy house.

18 P ero si no te entregas a los príncipes del rey de Babilonia, esta ciudad caerá en manos de los caldeos, y ellos le prenderán fuego, y tú no podrás escapar de sus manos.”»

But if thou wilt not go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand.

19 E l rey Sedequías le contestó: «Jeremías, tengo miedo de los judíos que se han pasado al bando de los caldeos. Tal vez me entreguen en sus manos y me pongan en ridículo.»

And Zedekiah the king said unto Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews that are fallen away to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me.

20 P ero Jeremías le dijo: «No te entregarán. Si atiendes a la voz del Señor, y a lo que yo te digo, te irá bien y vivirás.

But Jeremiah said, They shall not deliver thee. Obey, I beseech thee, the voice of Jehovah, in that which I speak unto thee: so it shall be well with thee, and thy soul shall live.

21 P ero si te niegas a entregarte, esto es lo que el Señor me ha revelado:

But if thou refuse to go forth, this is the word that Jehovah hath showed me:

22 T odas las mujeres que han quedado en el palacio real de Judá serán entregadas a los príncipes del rey de Babilonia, y ellas mismas dirán: “Tus amigos te engañaron, y te han vencido. Hundieron tus pies en el cieno, y luego te abandonaron.”

behold, all the women that are left in the king of Judah's house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon's princes, and those women shall say, Thy familiar friends have set thee on, and have prevailed over thee: now that thy feet are sunk in the mire, they are turned away back.

23 E ntonces todas tus mujeres y tus hijos serán entregados a los caldeos, y tú no escaparás de sus manos, sino que el rey de Babilonia mismo te hará prisionero, y a esta ciudad le prenderán fuego.»

And they shall bring out all thy wives and thy children to the Chaldeans; and thou shalt not escape out of their hand, but shalt be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon: and thou shalt cause this city to be burned with fire.

24 S edequías le dijo a Jeremías: «Si no quieres morir, nadie debe enterarse de esto.

Then said Zedekiah unto Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and thou shalt not die.

25 S i los príncipes llegan a saber que yo he hablado contigo, y vienen a verte y te dicen: “Dinos por favor de qué hablaste con el rey. Si no quieres que te matemos, no nos ocultes nada. Y dinos también qué te dijo el rey”,

But if the princes hear that I have talked with thee, and they come unto thee, and say unto thee, Declare unto us now what thou hast said unto the king; hide it not from us, and we will not put thee to death; also what the king said unto thee:

26 t ú les responderás: “Yo le pedí al rey que no me hiciera volver a la casa de Jonatán, pues no quiero morir allí.”»

then thou shalt say unto them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan's house, to die there.

27 E n efecto, todos los príncipes fueron a ver a Jeremías y le preguntaron, y él les respondió tal y como el rey le había sugerido. Entonces ellos, al ver que ese asunto no había trascendido, dejaron a Jeremías en paz.

Then came all the princes unto Jeremiah, and asked him; and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they left off speaking with him; for the matter was not perceived.

28 Y Jeremías se quedó en el patio de la cárcel hasta el día en que Jerusalén fue conquistada. El día en que Jerusalén cayó, Jeremías estaba allí.

So Jeremiah abode in the court of the guard until the day that Jerusalem was taken.
