1 ¡ Cómo se ha empañado el oro! ¡El oro fino ha perdido su brillo! ¡Las piedras del santuario se hallan esparcidas por todas las calles y encrucijadas!

How is the gold become dim! how is the most pure gold changed! The stones of the sanctuary are poured out at the head of every street.

2 L os hijos de Sión, más preciados y estimados que el oro puro, ¡ahora son vistos como vasijas de barro, como hechura de un alfarero!

The precious sons of Zion, comparable to fine gold, How are they esteemed as earthen pitchers, the work of the hands of the potter!

3 A un los chacales cuidan de sus cachorros, pero mi amada ciudad es cruel como avestruz del desierto.

Even the jackals draw out the breast, they give suck to their young ones: The daughter of my people is become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness.

4 T anta sed tienen los niños de pecho que la lengua se les pega al paladar; los pequeñitos piden de comer, ¡y no hay quien los alimente!

The tongue of the sucking child cleaveth to the roof of his mouth for thirst: The young children ask bread, and no man breaketh it unto them.

5 T endidos por las calles yacen los que comían delicados platillos; los que antes se vestían de púrpura, hoy se aferran a los basureros.

They that did feed delicately are desolate in the streets: They that were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills.

6 L a maldad de Jerusalén fue mayor que el pecado de Sodoma; ¡en un instante quedó en ruinas, sin la intervención humana!

For the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the sin of Sodom, That was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands were laid upon her.

7 S us nobles eran más claros que la nieve y más blancos que la leche; de piel más rosada que el coral, de talle más delicado que el zafiro.

Her nobles were purer than snow, they were whiter than milk; They were more ruddy in body than rubies, their polishing was as of sapphire.

8 ¡ Pero han quedado irreconocibles! ¡Se ven más oscuros que las sombras! ¡Tienen la piel pegada a los huesos! ¡Están secos como un leño!

Their visage is blacker than a coal; they are not known in the streets: Their skin cleaveth to their bones; it is withered, it is become like a stick.

9 M ás dichosos fueron los que cayeron en batalla que los que fueron muriendo de hambre, porque éstos fueron muriendo lentamente por no tener para comer los frutos de la tierra.

They that are slain with the sword are better than they that are slain with hunger; For these pine away, stricken through, for want of the fruits of the field.

10 C on sus propias manos, mujeres piadosas cocinaron a sus hijos. El día que mi ciudad amada fue destruida, sus propios hijos les sirvieron de alimento.

The hands of the pitiful women have boiled their own children; They were their food in the destruction of the daughter of my people.

11 E l Señor derramó el ardor de su ira y satisfizo su enojo; ¡encendió en Sión un fuego que redujo a cenizas sus cimientos!

Jehovah hath accomplished his wrath, he hath poured out his fierce anger; And he hath kindled a fire in Zion, which hath devoured the foundations thereof.

12 J amás creyeron los reyes de la tierra, ni los habitantes del mundo, que nuestros enemigos lograrían pasar por las puertas de Jerusalén.

The kings of the earth believed not, neither all the inhabitants of the world, That the adversary and the enemy would enter into the gates of Jerusalem.

13 ¡ Pero fue por los pecados de sus profetas! ¡Fue por las maldades de sus sacerdotes, que en sus calles derramaron sangre inocente!

It is because of the sins of her prophets, and the iniquities of her priests, That have shed the blood of the just in the midst of her.

14 T ropezaban por las calles, como ciegos. ¡Tan manchadas de sangre tenían las manos que no se atrevían a tocar sus vestiduras!

They wander as blind men in the streets, they are polluted with blood, So that men cannot touch their garments.

15 « ¡Apártense, gente impura!», les gritaban; «¡Apártense, no toquen nada!» Y se apartaron y huyeron. Y entre las naciones se dijo: «Éstos jamás volverán a vivir aquí.»

Depart ye, they cried unto them, Unclean! depart, depart, touch not! When they fled away and wandered, men said among the nations, They shall no more sojourn here.

16 E l Señor, en su enojo, los dispersó y no volvió a tomarlos en cuenta, pues no respetaron a los sacerdotes ni se compadecieron de los ancianos.

The anger of Jehovah hath scattered them; he will no more regard them: They respected not the persons of the priests, they favored not the elders.

17 N uestros ojos desfallecen, pues en vano esperamos ayuda; en vano esperamos el apoyo de una nación incapaz de salvarnos.

Our eyes do yet fail in looking for our vain help: In our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save.

18 V igilan todos nuestros pasos; no podemos salir a la calle; el fin de nuestros días se acerca; ¡nuestra vida ha llegado a su fin!

They hunt our steps, so that we cannot go in our streets: Our end is near, our days are fulfilled; for our end is come.

19 L os que nos persiguen son más ligeros que las águilas del cielo. Nos persiguen por los montes, y en el desierto nos han tendido trampas.

Our pursuers were swifter than the eagles of the heavens: They chased us upon the mountains, they laid wait for us in the wilderness.

20 A trapado entre sus redes quedó el ungido del Señor, el que daba aliento a nuestra vida; aquél del cual decíamos: «Bajo su sombra protectora viviremos entre las naciones.»

The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of Jehovah, was taken in their pits; Of whom we said, Under his shadow we shall live among the nations.

21 ¡ Alégrate ahora, Edom, tú que habitas en la región de Uz! ¡Ya te llegará la hora de beber la copa de la ira, hasta que la vomites!

Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, that dwellest in the land of Uz: The cup shall pass through unto thee also; thou shalt be drunken, and shalt make thyself naked.

22 T u castigo, Sión, ya se ha cumplido, y nunca más volverán a llevarte cautiva. Pero a ti, Edom, el Señor castigará tu iniquidad y pondrá al descubierto tus pecados.

The punishment of thine iniquity is accomplished, O daughter of Zion; he will no more carry thee away into captivity: He will visit thine iniquity, O daughter of Edom; he will uncover thy sins.
