1 E l cuarto día del mes noveno, es decir, en el mes de Quisleu, del año cuarto del rey Darío, sucedió que la palabra del Señor vino a Zacarías.

And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Darius, that the word of Jehovah came unto Zechariah in the fourth day of the ninth month, even in Chislev.

2 E l pueblo de Betel había enviado a Sarezer, y a Reguen Mélec y sus hombres, a implorar el favor del Señor

Now they of Beth-el had sent Sharezer and Regem-melech, and their men, to entreat the favor of Jehovah,

3 y a preguntar a los sacerdotes y profetas que estaban en la casa del Señor de los ejércitos si debían guardar luto y abstinencia en el mes quinto, tal y como lo habían hecho durante algunos años.

and to speak unto the priests of the house of Jehovah of hosts, and to the prophets, saying, Should I weep in the fifth month, separating myself, as I have done these so many years?

4 Y la palabra del Señor de los ejércitos vino a mí, y me dijo:

Then came the word of Jehovah of hosts unto me, saying,

5 « Di a todo el pueblo del país, y a los sacerdotes, lo siguiente: Todos estos años, cuando ustedes ayunaron y guardaron luto en los meses quinto y séptimo, ¿lo hicieron para mí?

Speak unto all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and in the seventh month, even these seventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, even to me?

6 ¿ No es verdad que cuando ustedes comen y beben, lo hacen para ustedes mismos?»

And when ye eat, and when ye drink, do not ye eat for yourselves, and drink for yourselves?

7 ¿ Y acaso no son estas palabras las mismas que el Señor proclamó por medio de los profetas de antaño, cuando Jerusalén estaba habitada y tranquila, lo mismo que las ciudades de sus alrededores, y el Néguev y la Sefela? El cautiverio como resultado de la desobediencia

Should ye not hear the words which Jehovah cried by the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and in prosperity, and the cities thereof round about her, and the South and the lowland were inhabited?

8 L a palabra del Señor vino a Zacarías, y le dijo:

And the word of Jehovah came unto Zechariah, saying,

9 « Así ha dicho el Señor de los ejércitos: Juzguen ciñéndose a la verdad, y sea cada uno de ustedes misericordioso y compasivo con su hermano;

Thus hath Jehovah of hosts spoken, saying, Execute true judgment, and show kindness and compassion every man to his brother;

10 n o opriman a las viudas ni a los huérfanos, ni a los extranjeros ni a los pobres; y nunca abriguen malos pensamientos en contra de sus hermanos.»

and oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the sojourner, nor the poor; and let none of you devise evil against his brother in your heart.

11 P ero ellos no quisieron escuchar, sino que volvieron la espalda y se taparon los oídos para no oír;

But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they might not hear.

12 e ndurecieron su corazón como el diamante, para no oír la ley ni las palabras que el Señor de los ejércitos enviaba por medio de su espíritu y de los profetas de antaño. Por eso el Señor de los ejércitos se enojó en gran manera.

Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which Jehovah of hosts had sent by his Spirit by the former prophets: therefore there came great wrath from Jehovah of hosts.

13 Y sucedió que el Señor de los ejércitos no los escuchó cuando ellos clamaron, del mismo modo que ellos no lo escucharon cuando él clamó. Por eso dijo:

And it is come to pass that, as he cried, and they would not hear, so they shall cry, and I will not hear, said Jehovah of hosts;

14 « Yo los esparcí con un torbellino por todas las naciones que ellos no conocían, y por donde ellos pasaban la tierra quedaba desolada e intransitable, pues la tierra otrora deseable la convirtieron en un desierto.»

but I will scatter them with a whirlwind among all the nations which they have not known. Thus the land was desolate after them, so that no man passed through nor returned: for they laid the pleasant land desolate.
