1 T iempo después, Samuel le dijo a Saúl: «El Señor me ha enviado a ungirte como rey de Israel, su pueblo. Por lo tanto, debes prestar atención a lo que el Señor te ordene.

And Samuel said unto Saul, Jehovah sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of Jehovah.

2 A sí ha dicho el Señor de los ejércitos: “Voy a castigar a Amalec por el mal que les hizo a los israelitas cuando los atacó al salir de Egipto, y les impidió que siguieran su camino.”

Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, I have marked that which Amalek did to Israel, how he set himself against him in the way, when he came up out of Egypt.

3 A sí que ve y mata a los amalecitas; destruye todo lo que tienen. No les tengas compasión a sus hombres ni a sus mujeres, y ni siquiera a sus niños de pecho; ni a sus vacas, ovejas, camellos y asnos.»

Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.

4 S aúl ordenó que el pueblo se reuniera, y en Telayín les pasó revista. Eran doscientos mil soldados de infantería, y diez mil hombres de Judá.

And Saul summoned the people, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah.

5 L uego fue a la ciudad de Amalec, y puso una emboscada en el valle;

And Saul came to the city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley.

6 p ero antes de la batalla mandó que les dijeran a los quenitas: «Ustedes fueron compasivos con los israelitas cuando ellos venían de Egipto, así que apártense de los amalecitas. Huyan, para que no los destruya a ustedes lo mismo que a ellos.» Y los quenitas salieron de la ciudad de los amalecitas.

And Saul said unto the Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them; for ye showed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.

7 E ntonces Saúl lanzó todo su ejército sobre los amalecitas, y los derrotó; los persiguió desde Javilá hasta Shur, al oriente de Egipto,

And Saul smote the Amalekites, from Havilah as thou goest to Shur, that is before Egypt.

8 y mató a filo de espada a todo el pueblo, aunque dejó con vida a Agag, el rey de Amalec.

And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.

9 A demás de perdonar a Agag, Saúl y su gente también se quedaron con lo mejor de sus animales: ovejas, toros, becerros engordados y carneros; lo de poco valor lo destruyeron.

But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but everything that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.

10 P ero el Señor le dijo a Samuel:

Then came the word of Jehovah unto Samuel, saying,

11 « Estoy muy disgustado por haber hecho rey de Israel a Saúl, pues se ha apartado de mí y no ha cumplido con lo que le ordené hacer.» Cuando Samuel oyó esto, se llenó de pesar, y toda esa noche le estuvo rogando al Señor por Saúl.

It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king; for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And Samuel was wroth; and he cried unto Jehovah all night.

12 A l amanecer, se levantó y fue a buscar a Saúl, y le avisaron que había estado en Carmel, donde había levantado un monumento, pero que había regresado a Gilgal.

And Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning; and it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a monument, and turned, and passed on, and went down to Gilgal.

13 C uando Samuel llegó a donde estaba Saúl, éste le dijo: «¡Que el Señor te bendiga! Ya cumplí con lo que el Señor me ordenó hacer.»

And Samuel came to Saul; and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of Jehovah: I have performed the commandment of Jehovah.

14 P ero Samuel le respondió: «Entonces, ¿qué son esos balidos de ovejas, y esos bramidos de vacas que llegan a mis oídos?»

And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?

15 Y Saúl le respondió: «Esos animales fueron traídos de Amalec. El pueblo dejó con vida a las mejores ovejas y vacas, para sacrificarlas al Señor tu Dios Todo lo demás fue destruido.»

And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto Jehovah thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.

16 P ero Samuel le dijo: «Escucha bien lo que el Señor me dijo durante la noche.» Y Saúl le respondió: «Te escucho.»

Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what Jehovah hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on.

17 S amuel añadió: «¿No es verdad que tú mismo te considerabas alguien insignificante? ¿Y no es verdad que el Señor te ha hecho jefe de las tribus de Israel, y te ha consagrado como su rey?

And Samuel said, Though thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel? And Jehovah anointed thee king over Israel;

18 E l Señor te dio una misión, cuando te dijo: “Ve y destruye por completo a los amalecitas. Combátelos, hasta acabar con todos ellos.”

and Jehovah sent thee on a journey, and said, Go, and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.

19 E ntonces, ¿por qué no has obedecido lo que te ordenó el Señor, sino que has traído contigo lo que le quitaste a tus enemigos? A los ojos del Señor, has hecho mal.»

Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of Jehovah, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah?

20 P ero Saúl le respondió: «Yo cumplí con lo que me ordenó el Señor. Destruí a los amalecitas, y como prueba he traído a Agag, su rey.

And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of Jehovah, and have gone the way which Jehovah sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.

21 F ue el pueblo quien tomó lo mejor de las ovejas y vacas, lo que debió haber sido destruido primero, para ofrecer sacrificios al Señor tu Dios en Gilgal.»

But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the devoted things, to sacrifice unto Jehovah thy God in Gilgal.

22 S amuel le contestó: «¿Y crees que al Señor le gustan tus holocaustos y ofrendas más que la obediencia a sus palabras? Entiende que obedecer al Señor es mejor que ofrecerle sacrificios, y que escucharlo con atención es mejor que ofrecerle la grasa de los carneros.

And Samuel said, Hath Jehovah as great delight in burnt-offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of Jehovah? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

23 S er rebelde es lo mismo que practicar la adivinación, y ser obstinado es lo mismo que ser idólatra. Puesto que tú no tomaste en cuenta lo que el Señor te ordenó, tampoco él te toma en cuenta como rey de Israel.»

For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and teraphim. Because thou hast rejected the word of Jehovah, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

24 E ntonces Saúl le respondió a Samuel: «Reconozco mi pecado. He faltado al mandamiento del Señor y a tus palabras. Y es que tuve miedo del pueblo, y cedí ante sus exigencias. Yo te ruego que me perdones mi pecado,

And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned; for I have transgressed the commandment of Jehovah, and thy words, because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.

25 y que me acompañes a adorar al Señor.»

Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship Jehovah.

26 P ero Samuel le contestó: «No te voy a acompañar a ninguna parte. Puesto que tú no tomaste en cuenta las palabras del Señor, tampoco él te toma en cuenta como rey de Israel.»

And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee; for thou hast rejected the word of Jehovah, and Jehovah hath rejected thee from being king over Israel.

27 Y Samuel se dispuso a retirarse, pero Saúl lo agarró de la punta del manto para detenerlo, y el manto se desgarró.

And as Samuel turned about to go away, Saul laid hold upon the skirt of his robe, and it rent.

28 E ntonces Samuel le dijo: «Así como este manto ha quedado desgarrado, así el Señor te ha desgarrado del reino de Israel, y se lo ha entregado a alguien mejor que tú.

And Samuel said unto him, Jehovah hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbor of thine, that is better than thou.

29 E l Señor, que es la Gloria de Israel, no miente ni se arrepiente. El Señor no es un ser humano, para arrepentirse.»

And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent; for he is not a man, that he should repent.

30 Y Saúl respondió: «Reconozco que he pecado. Por eso te ruego que me honres con tu presencia delante de los ancianos del pueblo, y delante de todos los israelitas, y me acompañes a adorar al Señor tu Dios.»

Then he said, I have sinned: yet honor me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship Jehovah thy God.

31 S amuel accedió, y acompañó a Saúl para adorar al Señor.

So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped Jehovah.

32 D espués de eso, dijo Samuel: «Que traigan a Agag, el rey de los amalecitas.» Y Agag se presentó ante Samuel. Iba tan alegre, que le dijo: «¡Qué bueno que ya acabó esta guerra!»

Then said Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites. And Agag came unto him cheerfully. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past.

33 P ero Samuel le respondió: «Tu espada mató a muchos israelitas, y sus mujeres se quedaron sin hijos; y así también tu madre se quedará sin su hijo.» Y allí mismo en Gilgal, ante el Señor, Samuel cortó en pedazos a Agag.

And Samuel said, As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before Jehovah in Gilgal.

34 D espués de eso, Samuel regresó a Ramá, y Saúl se fue a su casa en Gabaa.

Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.

35 Y Samuel nunca más volvió a ver a Saúl, aunque lloraba por él. Y al Señor le pesó haber puesto a Saúl por rey de Israel.

And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death; for Samuel mourned for Saul: and Jehovah repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.
